physical condition resulting either from a faulty or inadequate diet (i.e., a diet that does not supply normal quantities of all nutrients ) or from a physical inability to absorb or metabolize nutrients, owing to disease. Malnutrition may be the result of several conditions. First, sufficient and proper food may not be available because of inadequate agricultural processes, imperfect distribution of food, or certain social problems, such as poverty or alcoholism . In these instances, the cause of malnutrition is most often found to be a diet quantitatively inadequate in calories or protein. Malnutrition may also result when certain foods containing one or more of the essential vitamins or minerals are not included in the diet. This commonly leads to specific nutritional-deficiency diseases. Poor eating habits and food preferences may lead to malnutrition through the habitual consumption of certain foods to the exclusion of others or of large quantities of nonnutritious foods. In certain parts of Africa, for example, the practice of weaning breast-fed infants to a diet consisting chiefly of one kind of starchy food, such as cassava, may lead to protein deficiency ( see kwashiorkor ). In parts of East Asia, a restricted selection of foods and a preference for white polished rice as a dietary staple has led to the prevalence of a deficiency of

E-Mail: hrs2@cornell.edu SEATTLE If today's global statistics of more than 3 billion malnourished people are worrisome, try projecting 50 years into the future, when Earth's population could exceed 12 billion and there could be even less water and land, per capita, to grow food. The current level of malnutrition among nearly half the world's population of 6.3 billion is unprecedented in human history, says agricultural ecologist David Pimentel of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. "Every trend from decreasing per-capita availability of food and cropland to population growth shows the predicament becoming even more dire," Pimentel says. "In the next 50 years, the degree of malnutrition, resultant disease and human misery is unimaginable. But we have to try to consider the future while there is still time to make meaningful changes, to reverse these trends and ensure a sustainable food supply." Pimentel's views were presented by his colleague, Paul Reitan of the University at Buffalo, today (Feb. 13) at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Seattle. The title of the talk was "The Importance of Soil in Sustaining Civilization."

Tools Related Articles Web Links A third of child deaths occur for want of simple vitamins and minerals and a daily fill of breast milk. That's the stark message from five studies of childhood and maternal malnutrition published this week in The Lancet "If you eliminated malnutrition, you would prevent 35 per cent of child deaths globally," says Bruce Cogill of UNICEF in New York, author of a study examining whether the situtation could be remedied by reforming agencies charged with tackling malnutrition. Cogill says that although malnutrition killed 2.2 million children under 5 in 2005, only $250 million is spent on nutrition aid globally. This compares with the $3 billion spent on HIV/AIDS, which killed 380,000 children under 15 in 2006.

Summary
Advice on diet for malnutrition as a result of illness in adults
Ill people often eat less than usual. If this reduced food intake is prolonged, it can cause weight loss, malnutrition and death. Advice may be offered to encourage good eating habits of high-protein and high-energy foods so that weight can be gained and the person's nutritional status improved. Oral nutritional supplements are also offered. Thirty-six studies with a total of 2714 people are included in this review. Follow up ranged from 18 days to 24 months. There are several significant results for change in weight and other nutritional measures suggesting nutritional intervention is beneficial. It has not been possible to determine whether advice or supplements is better. The authors conclude that nutritional intervention appears to be more effective than no help. More research is needed to work out the best ways to help people who are losing weight through illness to improve their clinical outcomes. The Cochrane Library (ISSN 1464-780X).

"Shocking" rate of malnutrition in donor-dependent Gaza
Report, PCHR, 15 February 2008
Ard al-Insan Child Nutrition Center in Gaza city treated almost 8,500 malnourished youngsters last year. (PCHR)
"We receive 20-25 new referrals every day, and we see approximately 350 children a week here at the centre. Last year we treated more than 8,400 children here in Gaza city, plus another 8,000 children at our centre in Khan Younis. All of them were under five years old, and all of them were malnourished." Najah Zohod is the Nutritional Director of the Ard al-Insan Child Nutrition Center in Gaza City. The center works exclusively with malnourished under-five-year-olds. Children are regularly referred to Ard al-Insan from the Gaza-based UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which supports some of the poorest communities in the Gaza Strip. But many mothers self-refer, by simply turning up at the center with their babies and young children. This morning Ard al-Insan is crowded with women and children queuing for assessments and treatment. Most of the children are quiet, and some look thin and listless.

Children Pay Cost of Iraq's Chaos
Malnutrition Nearly Double What It Was Before Invasion
By Karl Vick Washington Post Foreign Service
Sunday, November 21, 2004; Page A01 BAGHDAD Acute malnutrition among young children in Iraq has nearly doubled since the United States led an invasion of the country 20 months ago, according to surveys by the United Nations, aid agencies and the interim Iraqi government. After the rate of acute malnutrition among children younger than 5 steadily declined to 4 percent two years ago, it shot up to 7.7 percent this year, according to a study conducted by Iraq's Health Ministry in cooperation with Norway's Institute for Applied International Studies and the U.N. Development Program. The new figure translates to roughly 400,000 Iraqi children suffering from "wasting," a condition characterized by chronic diarrhea and dangerous deficiencies of protein.
Suad Ahmed's 4-month-old granddaughter, Hiba, has chronic diarrhea, a common ailment among Iraqi children under 5.

Short Report
Prevalence of malnutrition among settled pastoral Fulani children in Southwest Nigeria
Uwem F Ekpo Akin M Omotayo and Morenike A Dipeolu BMC Research Notes Published:
Abstract (provisional)
Background
There is a dearth of information on the health of pastoral Fulani children living in south western Nigeria. These are fully settled pastoralists whose economy are centred on cattle and farming. In other to monitor and plan appropriate nutritional intervention for their children, a cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence of malnutrition of pastoral Fulani children.
Findings
Conclusion
These results indicate high prevalence of malnutrition among settled pastoral Fulani children, possibly due to changes food habits and lifestyle occasion by the transition from nomadic to sedentary living. We suggest the inclusion of Fulani's settlements in nutritional intervention for these areas.

Malnutrition Worsens the HIV/AIDS Pandemic By Joe De Capua
Washington
02 August 2006 De Capua interview on AIDS and malnutrition mp3 - Download (MP3) De Capua interview on AIDS and malnutrition mp3 - Listen (MP3) ... - Download One of the subjects that’ll be addressed at the upcoming international AIDS conference in Toronto will be the link between malnutrition and HIV/AIDS. Experts say hunger and poverty can cause people to engage in risky sexual behavior to raise money to buy food. One of those studying the problem is Stuart Gillespie of the International Food Policy Research Institute. From Geneva, he spoke to VOA English to Africa Service reporter Joe De Capua about the links between malnutrition and HIV/AIDS. “We’re finding more and more about the type of linkages there are and the importance of those linkages. Initially we felt the obvious direction of the linkage was that AIDS was precipitating or exacerbating food insecurity at the household level. But the more we’re looking into it we realize there’s another link, another direction to that link, which is that people who are extremely poor or food insecure are much more likely to be put at risk of being exposed to the virus through what they have to do to find income or work. They may be put at risk. And second, if they’re malnourished they’re also going to be more likely to be infected with the virus during any unsafe sex.”
