      Trichechus manatus DESCRIPTION:
Manatees and their relatives are the only vegetarian marine mammals. They are sometimes known as sea cows, and, like cows that live on land, they eat grass but sea grass. They weigh up to 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg) and reach 13 feet (4 m) in length. They have a mermaid-like tail. In fact, manatees probably inspired the legends about sirens, or mermaids, who beckoned sailors at sea, as their scientific classification suggests: they are in the Order Sirenia. RANGE/HABITAT: BEHAVIOR: Manatees are harmless and are the slowest marine mammal. They have no defense system except for fleeing, and do not fight for food or territory. They have few natural enemies, except man. Manatees eat 100 to 150 pounds (45-68 kg) of plants per day. Their big appetites and grazing helps to keep waterways free and flowing. When they are not eating, they are usually sleeping. However, they are known to body surf. Because of their need for warm water, manatees often congregate in the warm water effluents from power plants. Manatees communicate with squeaks and squeals. They are very tactile, "kiss" each other in greeting, and nuzzle snout to snout. They embrace with their flippers.

Understanding Manatees
Reprinted from The Wild Times Teacher Connection v3n3, Spring 1998. It is difficult to comprehend something as alien as a manatee if one has not experienced them. Especially difficult for children is interpreting the abstractions of the size and weight of such a large animal. The following suggestions are presented as activities in which you and your students may engage to de-mystify these unusual creatures.
How many children does it take to equal the weight of an average manatee?
Children may be sensitive about their individual weight, but by submitting their weight on a secret ballot, an average weight for your age group can be computed. We suggest that children be presented with the class sum rather than the individual weights. They can then compute the mean average by dividing that sum by the number of children in the class. Once an average child weight is arrived at, the children can easily use that weight as a divisor in finding the number of children that equal the weight of the average 1200 pound (500 kg) manatee. To make this number more concrete, gather that many children together near a actual size model of a manatee.

Manatees or sea cows (order Sirenia ) are large aquatic mammals that live in warm coastal waters and, during the winter, inland spring-fed rivers. The forelimbs are flippers; there are no hindlimbs. The tail, used for propulsion, is wide and flat. They are herbivores, eating only vegetation. Only four species exist, one of which lives in Florida.
Manatees can remain submerged for up to 15 minutes but usually surface to breathe every 3-5 minutes.
Manatees are docile creatures and have no natural predators. Recreational boat propellers account for many manatee injuries and deaths. American Scientist reports on a study, Manatees, Bioacoustics and Boats . that examined the hearing abilities of manatees and underwater acoustics and concludes with suggestions to reduce collisions.
PROTECTED

The Florida Manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris , is gray with a broad, square, bristled snout. It reaches a length of 8-14 feet and may weigh 600-2000 pounds (average 10', 1000 pounds).
Diet consists of sea- and bank grasses, mangrove, and submerged and floating vegetation.

The Manatee Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) was established in late 2001 and marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation in the manatee rehabilitation effort. Prior to the formation of the MRP, state and federal agencies exclusively provided post-release monitoring for Florida manatee rehabilitated at permitted and contracted manatee rehabilitation facilities in Florida. Because it is difficult to maintain funding levels necessary to meet all of the escalating manatee conservation needs, these agencies are no longer able to bare sole responsibility to provide this service. However tracking the fate and health of rehabilitated and released manatees is essential to determining the successful contribution of the rehabilitation program to the recovery of Florida manatee population. The Belizean Manatee Project is a cooperative effort of Wildlife Trust, the Florida Marine Research Institute, Mote Marine Laboratory, USA Fish and Wildlife Service's Sirenia Project, the Belize Coastal Zone Management Authority, and others. Currently, we are following the travels of one female manatee living in Northern Lagoon, located between Gales Point Village and Belize City in central Belize.

Manatees on the Sarasota Gulf Coast!
What is a Manatee? Manatees are a large, slow-moving marine mammal that inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters of North and South America and Africa. The world population of manatees is extremely endangered. The last aerial survey of the Florida West Indian Manatees that live in Florida waters was taken in January 2003. The survey showed a population count of 3,113 manatees. Manatee Shape and Size Average adult manatees are about 10 to 14 feet long and weigh between 1,500 to 1,800 pounds, although the largest are over 13 feet and weigh 3,500 pounds. Their torpedo-shaped gray-brown bodies taper into flat, paddle-like tails. They have two flippers and their faces are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout. Nostrils are on the upper surface of the snout which close tightly like valves when submerged. Manatees live to be approximately 60 years old. Manatee Diet Manatees eat by using their divided upper lip, which is very flexible, to grasp and take in sea grass and floating freshwater plants. A manatee’s only teeth are molars, for grinding vegetation. Some research suggests that manatees periodically require fresh water. West Indian manatees have been seen congregating at river mouths and drinking from hoses, culverts, and sewage outfalls. Up to six to eight hours each day is spent in the seagrass beds feeding. Manatees are completely herbivorous and can eat 10-15% of their body weight daily, or 100 to 150 pounds of vegetation for a 1,000-pound manatee. Like other air-breathing marine mammals (dolphins, whales, and seals), manatees must periodically surface for air.
