Manatees
What weighs over 1000 pounds, looks a bit like a walrus with wrinkled, gray-brown, spongy skin, is sometimes called a "sea cow", is related to an elephant, was mistaken for mermaids, can eat more than 100 pounds of vegetables per day, and travels an average of 3 to 5 miles per hour? Why the manatee, of course! These large animals were once thought to be related to walrus because of the way they look. Today, scientists are able to identify animals using genetics. Now they know that manatees are more closely related to elephants than any other living animal. Scientists believe that manatees evolved from land mammals that returned to an aquatic life. Manatees are large marine mammals weighing up to 2000 pounds and reaching more than 12 feet in length. Like whales, their large bodies can only be supported in their watery environment. On land, their body weight would crush their internal organs.

Manatees are found along the coast of the southeastern US, in the West Indies and adjacent parts of South America, in the Amazon and Orinoco drainages of South America, and tropical west Africa. Manatees are very large. Their maximum length may exceed 4 m, and their weight 1000 kg. They have a streamlined body; small and rounded head with a square, boxy snout; forelimbs flattened and webbed to form flippers, and a large, dorso-ventrally flattened tail fin or fluke. This fin has a single lobe. Their eyes are small, and the numerous large and thick vibrissae probably serve an important role in helping the animal detect its surroundings in the muddy waters that manatees seem to prefer. The flippers bear vestigial nails. Manatees are excellent swimmers, able to stay submerged for more than 15 minutes, but they are incapable of travelling on land. The lips of a manatee are deeply divided right from left, and the two sides work together during feeding, grasping vegetation (aided by the short, coarse bristles that line the outer surface of the lips) to bring in food.

The park serves as a rehabilitation center and refuge for endangered West Indian manatees that have been orphaned or injured in the wild and also for manatees that have been born in captivity. The natural spring environment allows them an opportunity to re-acclimate themselves to a more natural environment before they are returned to the wild.
The park does not allow swimming with the manatees since these animals may someday be released and would lose their fear of man, placing them at a disadvantage once they are back in the wild.
This section of the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park offers you vast choices of manatee information available to you. Select the subject your interested in and click the "show me" button for detailed information.

http://www.manateebrain.org/07evolution/index.html
The following brief summary has been adapted from a recent summary by Reynolds and Odell (1991). Much of what is known about the evolution of sirenians has been assembled by Daryl Domning, the world's foremost expert on this topic. Manatees and dugongs are marine mammals of the order Sirenia, and despite similarities in body shape, adaptations and habitat, they have no evolutionary relationship with the other major orders of marine mammals, such as the the Cetacea (whales, dolphins and porpoises), Pinnepedia (seals, sea lions and walrus), or Carnivora (sea otters and polar bears). Paleontological evidence as well as recent biochemical evidence, reveal that Sirenians, together with the Proboscideans (elephants), Hyracoidea (hyraxes) and Tubulidentata (aardvarks) represent four living orders of mammals that are sometimes lumped together as "subungulates", which derived from a primitive ungulate ancestral stock.
The mammals in these four orders all lack a clavicle, and have nails or hooves instead of claws. Sirenian evolution is not fully understood. They likely originated in Eurasia and/or Africa, but spread into tropical South America by the middle Eocene (45-50 mya). The sirenians reached a peak of diversity during the Oligocene and Miocene epochs (55 mya). The earliest animal with a manateelike appearance (Potamosiren) dates from the Miocene epoch (13-16 mya). Early fossil record begins with early Eocene genus Prorastomus, structurally close to the common ancestor, already adapted to at least a partially aquatic lifestyle "Sirenians have a long history, first appearing on earth some 50 mya, and their family tree has included denizens of cold as well as warm waters.

Manatees are endangered of becoming extinct because of our careless attitudes towards them. They are losing their habitats and many are killed because of boating injuries. It is essential that boaters keep a lookout and go slow in order to protect these gentle creatures.
Manatees are herbivores and are essential in grazing certain marine plants. They primarily live in warmer climates, such as off the Florida coast, the West Indies, and northern South America. Manatees are also called Sea Cows because they are more closely related to cows than to whales even.

Campaign in Belize against manatee hunts
Swim with the manatees 3.7MB/37 sec./320x240 1.3MB/37 sec./160x120 QuickTime movie January 31, 1998 Web posted at: 11:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT) BELIZE CITY, Belize (CNN) Environmentalists who monitor populations of endangered manatees say 1997 was the worst year in two decades for the sea-faring mammals, who populate shallow coastal waters from Florida to South America. Once numbering around 30,000, there are now just a few hundred remaining manatees, relatives of the elephant who feed on coastal grasses. One major threat to their survival comes from boats many manatee carry scars from collisions with propellers. But in Belize and other Latin American countries, the animals are also hunted for their meat and their unproven medicinal value as an aphrodisiac. But now, some Belizean villagers, supported by environmentalists from the United States, are on patrol, trying to stop the hunters. "We can see that attitudes are being changed," says Wil Maheia of the Belize Center for Environmental Studies. "We have people coming into our office telling us they have seen manatees recently or if they have seen some kind of suspicious behavior around the manatees."

      Manatees
West Indian manatees, Trichechus manatus (aka Florida manatees) are large, grayish-brown, aquatic mammals. They range from 10 to 12 feet in length and weigh between 800 and 3,500 pounds. Manatees have two pectoral fins (modified arms) and a flat, rounded tail. Their closest living relative is the elephant. They are one of four remaining species of the order Sirenia, which also includes the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, and the dugong. Manatees produce one offspring every two to five years. After a 14-month gestation period, mothers nurse their young, remaining the dependent calves for up to two years. At birth, manatee calves are three to four feet long and weigh 60 to 70 pounds. Females are not sexually mature until five to nine years. Under favorable conditions, manatees may live more than 60 years. Manatees have no natural enemies except humans. Today the manatee population is thought to number approximately 3,200 individuals. They are listed as "endangered" by the Endangered Species Act.

May 11, 2000 Searching for Manatees
And, herein lies the problem. The Sirens of Yesterday? There is a mystery associated with manatees. Were these creatures the Sirens of Greek myths? They carry the scientific name Sirenia for this reason. It's hard to believe that a sailor, even after months at sea, could mistake these creatures for the dangerous half-woman, half-bird whose seductive song would lure a sailor to his death. But manatees captured the popular imagination of explorers and sailors of old. Upon first seeing manatees (or possibly sea lions) in the Caribbean, Columbus wrote that these "mermaids were not half as beautiful as they are painted." Jacques Cousteau, the pioneering French underwater explorer, made a television program some years ago about manatees entitled, "Forgotten Mermaids" and only added to the lore. These bewhiskered animals with the gentle temperament and no known defenses, have no enemies except for humans. A cousin, the Stellar sea cow, was hunted to extinction just 27 years after it was discovered in the Bering Sea in 1741. Now manatees and their relatives, the dugongs, are endangered around the world. In some places, manatees are hunted for food, but in Florida, the story is more complex: Loss of habitat from development along the coast, a low rate of reproduction, and a high death rate from encounters with people are the main reasons that biologists fear for the manatees' future.

Manatees head for warmer water in winter
Florida manatees are on the move seeking warm-water sites to spend the winter. That means boaters must be cautious about looking out for our official marine mammal and for changing speed zones on waterways. Manatees generally start traveling to warm water when the air temperature drops below 50 degrees or when the water temperature dips to 68 degrees. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) changes seasonal speed zone signs in mid-November on many waterways to accommodate manatee migration. Boaters should scan the water near or in front of the boat looking for swirls resembling a large footprint, a repetitive line of half-moon swirls, a mud trail, a snout or fluke (tail) breaking the water's surface. Kipp Frohlich, leader of the FWC's Imperiled Species Management Section, said boaters can help manatees have a safe migration by doing the following:
  • Stay in marked channels.
