One-Way Flight to Mars? A Soldier Volunteers The idea, to say the least, was provocative. Back in March Nancy Atkinson wrote a piece for Universe Today about a retired NASA engineer named Jim McLane, who suggested a way to jump-start human settlement of Mars: go before we're sure how to get back. "When we eliminate the need to launch off Mars, we remove the mission’s most daunting obstacle," McLane told her. He said it would not be a suicide mission, but that risks are necessary when you do great things. "I don’t think there would be any shortage of people willing to volunteer for the mission. Lindbergh was someone who was willing to risk everything because it was worth it. I don’t think it will be hard to find another Lindbergh to go to Mars." A Guided Tour of this Site
In 1996 NASA launched two missions to Mars. The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft took off in November and reached the orbit of Mars on September 11, 1997 to begin an orbital mission that will provide detailed mapping and weather information. The Mars Pathfinder spacecraft blasted away in December and landed on the Red Planet on July 4, 1997. The micro-rover Sojourner has wandered its way around the Martian terrain, returning a wealth of new science data. By participating in the Mars Team Online project, you and your students can join the Mars team in their exploration of the Red Planet! The project is targeted at the middle school grade levels, but will have appeal above and below that range. The Mars Team Online Web pages include:

Mars: The Red Planet Some of the meteorites found on Earth are actually pieces of the planet Mars. As of June 2006, thirty-four "Martian meteorites" have been found. The temperature on Mars can be very, very cold. On its warmest day, Mars can still be a very cold place. At the top and bottom of the planet are poles just like on Earth. During the Martian winter, ice caps can be seen at the poles. Space probes have landed on Mars. These probes were sent on a fact-finding mission by the United States. They performed experiments on the Martian dirt and atmosphere . The dirt was found to contain clay which was rich in iron. The iron is what gives Mars its red color. Mars has many craters which were formed by meteorites or asteroids hitting it. Mars also has some of the tallest volcanoes and some of the deepest valleys in our solar system. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos which have unusual shapes. Scientists think these potato-shaped moons were once asteroids captured by Mars' gravitational pull

The Planet
Mars
Mars
, the "Red Planet", is named after the Roman god of war because it commonly appears with a reddish tinge when viewed in our sky. It has always held a fascination for those interested in the possibility of life on other planets. In 1895 a professor of astronomy, Samual Leland Phelps, wrote in a book called World Making that with a new 40 inch telescope being built by the University of Chicago, "It will be possible to see cities on Mars, to detect navies in [its] harbors, and the smoke of great manufacturing cities and towns... Is Mars inhabited? There can be little doubt of it ... conditions are all favorable for life, and life, too, of a high order. Is it possible to know this of a certainty? Certainly." (quoted in Feb., 1973 National Geographic The adjacent image shows a Viking 2 image of Mars. There is no evidence for the things that Professor Leland thought we would see with an earth-based telescope, but Mars is still of great interest to us, not the least reason being that it may once have harbored conditions favorable to the evolution of life. Bush outlined an ambitious plan for NASA's future exploration of the solar system. The plan includes human missions to the moon and Mars in search of the answers to many basic questions. From the Vision for Space Exploration: "Direct human experience in space has fundamentally altered our perspective of humanity and our place in the universe. Humans have the ability to respond to the unexpected developments inherent in space travel and possess unique skills that enhance discoveries. Just as Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo challenged a generation of Americans, a renewed U.S. space exploration program with a significant human component can inspire us and our youth to greater achievements on Earth and in space." Mars offerings at AMNH The American Museum of Natural History is offering an exciting array of programs and exhibits this winter and spring to educate the public on NASA’s latest Mars missions: two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity , recently landed on the planet’s surface. The solar-powered rovers are rolling across the dusty Martian landscape, taking stunning photographs and returning scientific data to Earth. Instruments on the rovers are searching for signs of water, one of the key ingredients for life. At the Museum, you can see the latest daily images from Mars, get up close to real Mars rocks in the newly renovated Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites , and attend workshops for families and children. New images are shown daily on the AstroBulletin in the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Hall of the Universe , in the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites theater, and in the pre-show area of the Hayden Planetarium prior to Space Show screenings. Our new Space Show The Search for Life: Are We Alone? features a dramatic 3-D visualization of the surface of Mars, giving viewers the experience of a walk on the red planet. Challenge Zone at the Ontario Science Centre How do you inspire a culture of innovation so that we can make a difference? Almost forty years ago, in 1969, The Ontario Science Centre and San Francisco’s Exploratorium both threw open their doors to a whole new way of experiencing science. At the time, they were revolutionary. Unlike conventional museums, where everything was under glass and visitors walked quietly among exhibits, these centres encouraged kids and adults to touch, make noise, listen to and interact with what they encountered. Since then, experiential science centres have opened up around the world: 540 science centres are members of the Association of Science-Technology Centers World Congress
This year, leaders from these institutions are meeting here in Toronto for the 5th Science Centre World Congress, June 15-19 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, hosted by the Ontario Science Centre.

Breaking News At the March 2008 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, planetary scientists used data collected by the European Space Agency 's Mars Express mission announced further evidence that beginning about 3.5 billion years ago, Mars experienced five episodes of major volcanic activity. Each episode released massive eruptions of lava and hot water onto the Martian surface lefted identifiable features. The scientists were able to date each episode by counting the number of small craters subsequently blasted into volcanic terrains created by each episode, by assuming that more craters accumulated on older terrains as meteorites of all sizes bombarded their surfaces over time.

The current version of Mars24 is 6.0.1, released 2008-05-22. Mars24 is a Java program which displays a Mars sunclock, a graphical representation of the planet Mars showing its current sun- and nightsides, along with a numerical readout of the time in 24-hour format. Other displays include a plot showing the relative orbital positions of Mars and Earth and a diagram showing the solar angle for a given location on Mars. Mars24 runs on many different types of computers, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and more, but it requires Java 1.5 or better be installed on the computer. The associated MER Spirit/Opportunity Clock Applet requires only Java 1.1.8 and is compatible with many older web browsers, but it does not include Mars Phoenix timing or the sunclock or other graphic displays of Mars24.
