Mars Today
Mars Today, created by Howard Houben of the Mars Global Circulation Model Group , is a poster produced daily by the Center for Mars Exploration at NASA's Ames Research Center. The updated poster depicts current conditions on Mars and its relationship to Earth in six panels.
The upper left panel diagrams the current positions of Mars and Earth in their orbits around the Sun. Note that Mars has a highly elliptical orbit compared to the Earth. For much of the time, Mars is too close to the Sun (as viewed from Earth) to be observed by Earth-based telescopes. For a QuickTime animation [1.1 MB] of the orbits of Earth and Mars and their relative positions through 2000 and 2001 click here. The panel also shows the interplanetary trajectory of Mars Global Surveyor. That spacecraft entered Mars orbit in 1997. Much information on the Martian surface and atmosphere was being gathered by the Global Surveyor which began the mapping phase of its mission in spring 1999.
The upper middle panel shows two views of the positions of Mars and Earth from vantage points near the ecliptic (the plane of the Earth's orbit). This allows visualization of the tilts of the rotation axes of the planets that are responsible for the seasons. Two views are necessary because Mars and Earth are tilted in nearly orthogonal directions. At this time, late spring in the Earth's northern hemisphere, the north pole is pointed towards the sun. It is also late spring in the northern hemisphere of Mars and that planet's north pole is pointed towards the sun at a similar angle. The changes in seasons on the Earth and Mars can be visualized in a 1.2 MB

Welcome Farkers ! Well, everyone but aerojockey. Take this blog post about the image here, for example. In just a few words, it manages to get nearly everything wrong. A lot of it is in Japanese, but some is in English: A man is in the photograph which the Mars explorer Spirit (it stopped transmitting data in 2004) sent. Second, Spirit stopped transmitting data in 2004? Well, kinda. It did stop, but then it started again from both the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on Mars . The blog post seems to phrase it that way on purpose, to make it sound like Something Mysterious Happened. Anyway, the image itself is, of course, yet another example of pareidolia, our ability to see patterns in random shapes. That does look like a guy hanging out on Mars, enjoying the 0.01 Earth atmospheric pressure, the 98% CO

(Last updated November 7, 2007.) Closest approach is on December 19, 2007. Opposition is on Christmas Eve. Don't believe the hoax! There is a message floating around the internet about an amazingly close Mars opposition where "Mars will be as big as the moon!" That message is a hoax, and it's full of misinformation. It describes an opposition that in . It's over. For more information on the hoax, see my article on the evolution of the hoax , or the Snopes.com page That makes a huge difference in the steadiness of the atmosphere. Even though the disk of Mars will be quite small, only 15.9" (vs. 25" in 2003 and 20.2" in 2005), the steadier seeing may allow use of high magnification, and you may be amazed how much you can see on this small planet. It will reach magnitude -1.6 at its brightest. This opposition is somewhat unusual in that we'll be seeing Mars nearly equator-on. So we should be able to see both hemispheres fairly equally, and may even be able to see both polar caps at once. Mars will hit its equinox (autumnal for the southern hemisphere, vernal for the northern) on December 9, so the north polar cap will be very prominent while the southern cap will be quite small. Throughout December we should be able to see the hazy "north polar hood" gradually break up to expose the brighter polar cap beneath.

Did NASA Find Life on Mars?
Posted: Thursday, January 24, 2008 8:25 AM by Dan Fleschner Filed Under: Live from Studio 1A
A week ago, Al and I discussed the possibility that UFOs might exist . Today, we asked the question: Is there life on Mars?
Some think that in photos taken by NASA's Spirit Rover in late 2007, a human-like figure is visible sitting on the rocks of a crater.
The photos (including the one at left) have caused a stir among bloggers and in the British media ( The Times of London suggested that maybe the figure is Osama Bin Laden hiding out).

java.com to learn more. Friday Jan 16, 10:00 AM PT Q:What exactly is Java's role in the Mars Rover mission? A: The places where NASA scientists have used Java for this mission is all on the ground side right now. They have created this collaborative command and control system called Maestro, which does this combination of data visualization, collaboration, command and control. It lets them look at images and create 3-D reconstructions of terrain. It allows various experimenters to look at the scenes and topography, browse the image databases and take part in all the participation they need to do. And to do it in a remote, distributed and collaborative kind of way - so they could actually have scientists at institutions all over the world who are not only looking at the data, but also collaboratively deciding on the way the mission should proceed. One of the nice things that the JPL guys have done is that they've made a "cleaned up for civilians" version of this application available that's called Maestro.

Earth soon after the Phoenix landing. The Mars Express Flight Control Team has now processed the signals, and the sounds of Phoenix descending are audible, loud and clear. ESA says the signal was tracked successfully, even during the expected transmission blackout window of the descent, until the lander was out of Mars Express’s view. The transmission blackout window is caused because of ionization around the probe, which builds up as the lander descends through the atmosphere and only very weak signals come through.

While the new version starts less slowly than 1.1.1, it still mysteriously crashes, sometimes taking the connection with it. The fix?
