Zen Meditation Instructions
Zazen is a particular kind of meditation, unique to Zen, that functions centrally as the very heart of the practice. In fact, Zen Buddhists are generally known as the "meditation Buddhists." Basically, zazen is the study of the self. The great Master Dogen said, "To study the Buddha Way is to study the self, to study the self is to forget the self, and to forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand things." To be enlightened by the ten thousand things is to recognize the unity of the self and the ten thousand things. Upon his own enlightenment, Buddha was in seated meditation; Zen practice returns to the same seated meditation again and again. For two thousand five hundred years that meditation has continued, from generation to generation; it's the most important thing that has been passed on. It spread from India to China, to Japan, to other parts of Asia, and then finally to the West. It's a very simple practice. It's very easy to describe and very easy to follow. But like all other practices, it takes doing in order for it to happen. We tend to see body, breath, and mind separately, but in zazen they come together as one reality. The first thing to pay attention to is the position of the body in zazen. The body has a way of communicating outwardly to the world and inwardly to oneself. How you position your body has a lot to do with what happens with your mind and your breath. Throughout the years of the evolution of Buddhism, the most effective positioning of the body for the practice of zazen has been the pyramid structure of the seated Buddha. Sitting on the floor is recommended because it is very stable. We use a zafu - a small pillow - to raise the behind just a little, so that the knees can touch the ground. With your bottom on the pillow and two knees touching the ground, you form a tripod base that gives three hundred and sixty-degree stability.

    Meditation

    1 Peter 2:2-5,9-12
    Readings

Have you ever noticed how hard it can be to convince a nursing baby to accept any substitute for his mother’s milk? He doesn’t know that the simple act of sucking helps him to grow; all he knows is that what he has tasted is good. As the baby grows into a toddler, he reaches out to explore his environment. Often the objects he encounters wind up in his mouth, and he learns the difference between food and everything else. Some of the food he accepts because it tastes good, and other foods he accepts because they seem to be important to the adults who feed him. Eventually, he learns to select and prepare his own food. There is plenty of room for creativity here, but he has to respect his body’s needs and make good choices about what he will ingest. Like newborn babies, we “have tasted that the Lord is good”—and we know not to be fooled by “worldly desires that wage war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11). We know to keep away from things that lead to indigestion: entertainment that glorifies lust and selfishness, for example, relationships based on manipulation and deception. We know instinctively that there is no substitute for God’s grace, and over time we learn that he has given us some foods that will help us mature in the Christian life—prayer, good teaching, and the sacraments. One of the most privileged “foods” God has given us is Scripture. Not all Scripture passages slide down as easily as a baby’s rice cereal. Rather, like a good steak, it requires careful chewing so that we can get all the nutrition it has to offer. In these cases, it’s perfectly acceptable to bring our perplexities to God and to share them with one another. After all, this is one of the best ways we can let the Holy Spirit enlighten us!

The theme is of universal concern : Unity Local and Global? How do we balance these two aspects in the modern world? How does Christian thought and meditation help? Cardinal Kasper is the principal presenter in this ecumenical exploration. Renowned for the depth and inclusiveness of his vision (and a much discussed candidate for the last papal election) his clarity, good-natured humour and his wisdom about the modern global process will offer unique and profound insights. The Seminar is a chance also to meet meditatlors from around the world and there is an optional pilgrimage of local monastic sites available.Complete information at http://www.jms2008.de/

M editation - Relaxing with sustained concentration
    Relaxation Techniques from Mind Tools
    Introduction:
As with our next tool ( self-hypnosis ), meditation has a popular image that can lead to it being dismissed as a less-than-serious stress management tool. This is a shame. Good research has been conducted into meditation that shows it is a useful and practical technique for managing stress. As with the next two tools, meditation is a good way of relaxing during, and at the end of, a stressful day. It is something you can learn to do yourself, or may be something you prefer to learn in classes. Note on research:
    The Relaxation Response
    Using the Tool:
The idea behind meditation is to consciously relax your body and focus your thoughts on one thing for a sustained period. This occupies your mind, diverting it from the problems that are causing you stress. It gives your body time to relax and recuperate, and to clear away stress hormones that may have built up.

      Meditation - Topic Overview
What is meditation? Meditation is the practice of focusing your attention to help you feel calm and give you a clear awareness about your life. Eastern philosophies have recognized the health benefits of meditation for thousands of years. Meditation is now widely practiced in the West, with the belief that it has positive effects on health. Two meditation techniques are most commonly used: concentrative and mindful.
      • Concentrative meditation, such as transcendental meditation (TM), focuses on a single image, sound, or mantra (words spoken or sung in a pattern), or on your own breathing. Mindful meditation, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), does not focus on a single purpose; rather, you are aware of all thoughts, feelings, sounds, or images that pass through your mind.

    Learning Meditation
Meditation is the art of looking inside and discovering one's own inner being. Meditation leads us not only to totally new inner experiences, but helps us also to transform our day-to-day life into a better, more meaningful and more fulfilling existence.
    Meditation
"When we can make the mind calm and quiet, we will feel that a new creation is dawning inside us.
When the mind is vacant and tranquil and our whole existence becomes an empty vessel,
our inner being can invoke infinite peace, light and bliss to enter into the vessel and fill it.
This is meditation. Sri Chinmoy This site is aimed to be an introduction into the field of meditation with advice for those learning to meditate . In the beginning it appears there are many different ways to learn how to meditate. However all types of meditation share common ideas such as silencing the mind and revealing our own inner self. If possible it is good to associate with people who have been meditating for a while, they will be able to inspire and encourage you. If you wish to take meditation seriously it is also advisable to take the guidance of a

I will give you the word today [Nov. 16, 2005] , and elaborate on it after a month or two, when I have produced the results. The word is that there is a program now involving one trillion dollars to eradicate world poverty and to establish permanent world peace. The project cost is one trillion dollars. Maharishi Transcendental Meditation or TM might best be described as the meditation technique introduced to the Western world by a man born in India on January 12, 1917, who was raised in a Hindu family and given the name Mahesh Prasad Varma. He now resides in the Netherlands and is known as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He was dubbed the " giggling guru " because of his habit of constantly giggling during television interviews. According to Brittanica , his organization, which includes real estate holdings, schools, and clinics, was worth more than $3 billion in the late 1990s. TM is said to bring the practitioner to a special state of consciousness often characterized as "enlightenment" or "bliss." The method involves entertaining a

4 Powerful Reasons to Meditate and How To Get Started
July 16th, 2007 by Tejvan Pettinger Print This Post Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. When the mind is silent, concentration is increased and we experience inner peace in the midst of worldly turmoil. This elusive inner peace is what attracts so many people to meditation and is a quality everyone can benefit from.
What are the Benefits of Meditation?
These are some of the benefits of meditation:
  • Improved concentration - A clear mind makes you more productive, especially in creative disciplines like writing. Less bothered by little things - Do you sometimes allow yourself to get upset by little things? It is the nature of the mind to magnify small things into serious problems. Meditation helps us detach. We learn to live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. We do not worry about meaningless things, but see the bigger picture.
