Meningitis
Overview
Meningococcal (muh-nin-jo-cok-ul) disease is a serious bacterial infection that most often leads to severe swelling of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) or infection of the bloodstream (meningococcemia). Even with treatment, approximately one out of every 10 people who get meningococcal disease will die; of those who survive, about two in 10 will have permanent problems including brain damage, kidney damage, hearing loss or amputation of arms, legs, fingers or toes. The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) is committed to increasing awareness about meningococcal disease among consumers and health care providers, and to prevention of meningococcal disease through vaccination. In 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new type of meningococcal disease vaccine, called a conjugate vaccine. The conjugate vaccine is recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a number of major health care organizations (e.g., American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College Health Association) for adolescents ages 11-12 and, for those who haven't previously received it, at high school entry (age 15). The vaccine is also recommended for college freshmen who will be living in dormitories. Talk to your health care provider about your children's vaccination status if they fall into any of these categories to ensure that your child or teen is protected against this potentially deadly disease. To find out more about meningococcal disease, visit the links in this section that include information for consumers/patients, health care providers and the media.

  • What Is It? Meningitis is an inflammation of coverings (meninges) of the brain and spinal cord. Most often it is caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Other infectious agents such as fungi can also cause meningitis. Rarer causes of meningitis include atypical drug reactions and systemic lupus erythematosus. Viral, or aseptic, meningitis is the most common type. In general, viral meningitis is not directly contagious. Anyone can get viral meningitis, but it occurs most often in children. Many different viruses can cause meningitis; an enterovirus tends to be the usual culprit.

    http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/handouts/meningococcal_disease.html
    Meningococcal Disease WHAT IS MENINGITIS?
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MENINGITIS?

High fever, headache, and stiff neck are common symptoms of meningitis in anyone over the age of two years. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take one to two days. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, discomfort looking into bright lights, confusion, and sleepiness. In newborns and small infants, the classic symptoms of fever, headache, and neck stiffness may be absent or difficult to detect, and the infant may only appear slow or inactive, or be irritable, have vomiting, or be feeding poorly. As the disease progresses, patients of any age may have seizures. HOW IS MENINGITIS DIAGNOSED?
Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. If symptoms occur, the patient should see a doctor immediately. The diagnosis is usually made by growing bacteria from a sample of spinal fluid. The spinal fluid is obtained by performing a spinal tap, in which a needle is inserted into an area in the lower back where fluid in the spinal canal is readily accessible. Identification of the type of bacteria responsible is important for selection of correct antibiotics. CAN MENINGITIS BE TREATED?

But at the party, the college freshman ran to the bathroom to vomit every half hour and eventually headed home, where her parents figured she’d feel better after a good night’s sleep. The next day, she collapsed on her way to the bathroom. Her dad carried her to their car, and they sped toward the local hospital. At the emergency room, she lost her vision for several terrifying seconds. “That scared me half to death,” Ashley says. “I knew something wasn’t right.”

    Bacterial Meningitis
    What is meningitis?
Meningitis is an infection of the fluid of a person's spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. People sometimes refer to it as spinal meningitis. Meningitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Knowing whether meningitis is caused by a virus or bacterium is important because the severity of illness and the treatment differ. Viral meningitis is generally less severe and resolves without specific treatment, while bacterial meningitis can be quite severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disability. For bacterial meningitis, it is also important to know which type of bacteria is causing the meningitis because antibiotics can prevent some types from spreading and infecting other people. The study, conducted by FDA, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and others, was published in the July 31, 2003 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine

Healthcare providers and families should review vaccination records of cochlear implant recipients to ensure that the patient is current on all the CDC recommended vaccinations. Recognize the signs of meningitis early . Cochlear implant recipients, along with their families and healthcare providers, need to be aware of the signs of meningitis. This can help ensure early detection and treatment of this life-threatening illness. Early intervention is vital in successfully treating the infection and minimizing permanent neurological damage.

    Meningitis
What is meningitis? Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by a number of infectious agents including viruses and bacteria. The type of meningitis and its cause can only be determined by a physician using laboratory test results. Viral meningitis (also called aseptic meningitis) is the most common type of meningitis and is less severe than bacterial meningitis. In Illinois, an average of 600 cases of aseptic meningitis are reported annually, with most occurring in late summer and early autumn. The majority of cases of aseptic meningitis are due to viruses called enteroviruses that can infect the stomach and small intestine. A small number of cases are caused by different viruses, which can be transmitted by infected mosquitos; these are called arboviruses. Fatal cases of viral meningitis are rare and complete recovery is the rule. Bacterial meningitis is often more severe than aseptic meningitis, particularly in infants and the elderly. Before antibiotics were widely used, 70 percent or more of bacterial meningitis cases were fatal; with antibiotic treatment, the fatality rate has dropped to 15 percent or less. Bacterial meningitis is most common in the winter and spring. Three bacteria cause the majority of cases: Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis

    How do you get Meningitis?
    • Meningitis may be caused by many different viruses and bacteria, or by diseases that cause inflammation of tissues of the body without infection.
In meningococcal meningitis, (also known as cerebrospinal fever and spotted fever), the symptoms may appear suddenly causing widespread infection and blood poisoning (septicaemia), and can be rapidly fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly in hospital
In meningococcal meningitis, there can be a characteristic rash of red or brownish pin prick spots caused by blood under the skin (haemorrhagic rash) which can develop into purple bruises and blood blisters.
GLASS TUMBLER TEST FOR HAEMORRHAGIC RASH - If a glass tumbler is pressed firmly against this haemorrhagic rash, the rash will not fade, it will remain visible through the glass. If this happens you should seek medical advice immediately.
