What is meningitis? Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and the spinal cord.
What causes meningitis? Meningitis is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection that invades the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) is the fluid within the open spaces of the brain that protect and cushion the brain and spinal cord. A fungus or parasite may also cause meningitis. The severity of a child's symptoms and prognosis depend on the specific organism that is causing the meningitis. Meningitis can occur in infants, children, and adults. Some bacteria and viruses are more common in certain age groups than others, including the following:
Bacteria that can cause meningitis (bacterial meningitis):
In newborns and young babies, possible bacteria include the following:
  • Group B streptococcus
  • Escherichia coli (or E. coli)
  • Listeria monocytogenes
In older babies and children, possible bacteria include the following:

Two students reportedly doing well
Both Cornell students who had recently been hospitalized with meningitis continue to improve, according to Janet Corson-Rikert, M.D., executive director of Gannett Health Services. Both cases were confirmed to have been caused by the type B strain of meningococcal (bacterial) meningitis, which is not covered by either Menomune or Menactra, the current meningococcal vaccines. Corson-Rikert said all identified contacts (people with whom the students were in recent close contact) have been alerted. The period of elevated risk for more cases will continue for another couple of weeks, and the university will remain alert for any reports of symptomatic students or others in the Cornell community. A second Cornell student has been hospitalized with presumed meningococcal (bacterial) meningitis in the past week. The most recent case is a male student who was hospitalized at Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) March 13 and is in stable condition. On March 8, a 21-year-old student was hospitalized

Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the three thin layers of tissue, known as meninges, that cover the brain and spinal cord. The two most common types of meningitis are bacterial and viral, and although they have similar symptoms (viral meningitis symptoms may be milder), the two diseases are quite different and require different treatment. When caused by a virus , meningitis is usually far less severe and is typically treated with bed rest or over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol. But because some other viruses are very serious and can invade the brain, it's important to seek medical attention as a precaution. Bacterial meningitis is generally much more severe than simple viral meningitis because it can cause serious complications. If not treated immediately, it can be fatal or cause permanent damage to the brain, so it's important to get medical attention as soon as symptoms are discovered. Hib meningitis has been virtually eliminated in young children in Uganda just five years after the country introduced Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine nationwide, according to an independent study.
Haemophilus influenzae type b is a leading cause of pneumonia and meningitis, an inflammation of the lining covering the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Hib kills approximately 400,000 children under five years of age, most of them in the developing world. It is also responsible for approximately three million cases of serious illnesses resulting in long-term consequences such as deafness, paralysis, mental retardation and learning disabilities. The positive results are outlined in a study to be published in the April issue of The Bulletin of the World Health Organization, an independent peer-reviewed international public health journal . Advanced publication of the study can be found

A high power view of acute meninigitis showing predominantly neutrophils in a proteinaceous exudate. (Description By:Margaret Grunnet, M.D. ) (Image Contrib. by:Margaret Grunnet, M.D. UCHC ) Acute purulent meningitis Etiology
Purulent meningitis is due most often to hematogenous spread of bacteria to the leptomeninges.
It can also be seen after head trauma as skull fracture through the sinuses.
Local infections such as mastoiditis may also lead to meningitis.
The most comman bacteria causing meningitis in neonates are streptococcus and E. Coli. In young children and adults Hemophilus influenzae, is common and in adults meningiococcus and pneumococcus are common. Pathogenesis
Bacteria extend through the wall of blood vessels into the subarachnoid space followed more slowly by neutrophils as the blood brain barrier breaks down.
The combination of bacteria and neutrophils in the subarachnoid space irritates the underlying cerebral cortex causing edema and increased intracranial pressure.
