Mexico - Airports Mexico History Mexico remains a nation where the past plays a prominent role in shaping the nation's present day development. Mexico has a fascinating but often bewildering history. Its past differs from that of the U.S. and Canada in several respects, notably: When "discovered" in 1519, Mexico was home to an estimated 10 million native inhabitants living in feudal but highly disciplined and organised societies. These people could not be ignored or simply swept aside, as was done in North America, but rather became the foundation upon which the Spanish conquerors built their colonial empire. Even today, Mexico is rich in ethnic diversity, with nearly 15 million pure-blooded Native Americans, speaking nearly fifty languages. Mexico endured 300 years of colonial domination (1521-1821) by Spain, a nation that itself was one of the least progressive in Europe. Iberian institutions, political heritage, and authoritarian traditions left an indelible mark on Mexico.

Mexico's history is long. Although the timing of the arrival of the first inhabitants to the Americas has been a point of major controversy among archaeologists, recent archaeological findings indicate that tribes from northeast Asia walked across what is now the Bering Straits perhaps as early as 35,000 years ago. Finding abundant wildlife these peoples gradually moved south, populating the entire Americas over the next several thousand years. In the area of present-day Mexico, the earliest settlers found a rugged and varied topography with only limited areas suited for human habitation. Viewed from space, modern Mexico roughly resembles a cornucopia, wide at the top but narrowing and curving to the east as it stretches southward. At the southern tip of the "cornucopia," the rectangular Yucatan Peninsula, described by some as a thumb, extends northward into the Caribbean Sea. Another discongruous piece of land, the Baja California Peninsula, is a long sliver of land offshore and paral-leling the northwest coast. The land itself is characterized by a roughly Y-shaped series of mountain ranges. The two forks of the Y are rugged ranges that parallel the northern parts of the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. The base of the Y is a spine of mountains, with occasional breaks, that extends from central Mexico into Guatemala on the south. The center of the Y is a knot of active volcanoes in the center of the country, just south of Mexico City. Between the two northern ranges lies a high arid plateau, and the small coastal plains outside these mountain ranges are tropical rain forests. The Yucatan Peninsula is a flat humid jungle, and the Baja California Peninsula is a desert with yet another low mountain range running down its center.

Historia y Desarollo: El Desarollo de REN YI WU KWAN TANG SOU DAO
Por: Grandmaster M.K. Loke
Traducción: A. Aragón y T. Matania

The Spanish Descent From Power: Its Slow Beginning, Its Shoddy Duration, and The Wreckage
Paper by Chitua Alozie
th century, Spain began a descent from power that was finally completed at the end of the 19 th century. What caused this remarkable country to fail in the aspects of politics in which it previously succeeded? This paper will explore a brief period of the Spanish legacy by examining its strategic beginning, its shoddy endurance, and the shameful aftermath.
Of the most memorable explorers were Christopher Columbus, Francisco Pizarro, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan, and Hernando Cortez. Each man ambitioned towards fame During the early 1500s, Spain was just about the only country that promoted the exploration of new territories—Italians, Portuguese, and French citizens often sought the endorsement of the Spanish government because the monarchies of their respective countries would hardly finance trips overseas. Thus, Spain intentionally sent explorers in its name and encouraged them to take advantage of those peoples for political distinction.
Of all the explorers worldwide, Christopher Columbus is the most popular within American society; perhaps this is due to the fact that he was extremely close to discovering America. Columbus was a Spaniard, born in 1451 he originally set out to prove that the Earth was round and evangelize the natives he would come across. However, his voyages soon became village raids, in which he and his men would exploit and terrorize natives until they received gold in large quantities.

History
Americas History Mexico History The Great Taos Bank Robbery: And Other True Stories of the Southwest
From AudioFile

Capturing the listener with his soft drawl, Tony Hillerman reads stories based on real-life events in Taos and other areas of New Mexico. He expertly adds personal flair and deep feelings to his stories, including a lot of humor and good-natured comments about the land and the people. During some of the stories Hillerman seems to be speaking directly to the listener. Hearing the author read allows the listener to learn a little about Hillerman the man, as well as the country he so obviously loves. His performance adds immensely to the value of these stories. Gilbert M. Joseph (Editor)
January 2003
Paperback
From Booklist
This massive compilation of articles, essays, poetry, and photographs provides a wonderful introduction to the history and culture of Mexico. Joseph and Henderson are both historians with extensive backgrounds in Latin American and Mexican history. They have selected an eclectic mix of writers, many of them Mexican, including Carlos Fuentes and Octavio Paz. Topics range from the origins and growth of the Aztec Empire to the causes of the Mexican Revolution to the problems facing modern Mexico. There are well-thought-out political tracts here, as well as screeds against political corruption and economic exploitation that drip with outrage. What emerges is a portrait of the "many Mexicos" in which the wealthy, the growing middle class, and the impoverished indigenous peoples are all struggling to find their place in an...
