version a b c d ... z Updated: 26.11.2003 Bessarabia - the name often given to the region of historic Moldavia between the Dniester and Prut rivers - has a long and stormy history. Part of Scythia in the 1st millennium BC, Bessarabia later came marginally under the control of the Roman Empire as part of Dacia. Lying on one of the principal land routes into Europe, it was invaded by successive waves of barbarians, and the area had many masters. Gradually, under varying influences, the Vlach (or Romanian) nationality developed. Part of the area came under the rule of Kievan Rus between the 10th and 12th centuries AD and later passed to the Galician princes. From 1241 to the 14th century Moldavia was vassal to the Tatars Old Moldavia The Genoese, founding fortified commercial outposts on the Dniester in the 14th century, paved the way for contact with Western culture, but Bessarabia's development depended on the rise of the principalities of Moldavia and Walachia, which soon expanded to include the territory. The southern area, which originally fell into the Walachian sphere, probably took its name from the Basarab dynasty. The whole province became part of Moldavia in the 15th century but was soon exposed to the Turkish onslaught; the key points of Cetatea Alba and Chilia (modern

Firstly being a boyar and since 1641 a monastic patrimony, Chisinau (Kishinev) was repeatedly destroyed. The first remaining scheme of Chisinau (Kishinev) refers to the beginning of the XIX century. It testifies about the fact that the town in the middle of the XIX century constituted the assemblage of dirty pise houses with reed roofs without firmly determined districts and streets. The Bik was partitioned off with dams with mills and mechanisms for skin processing and leather manufacture. Over the dwelling part of the town swarms of flies and gnats were hovering. The Bik used to frequently overflow. The puddles and bogs were the consequence of winter flood and autumn rains. The planned building of the town was begun in 1818. In 1834 the government adopted a general plan of the Kishinev development. From 1829 till 1834 wells, that provided the most part of the population with water, were improved in Kishinev. At the expense of the Town Council (Duma)

HISTORY
Moldova occupies most of what has been known as Bessarabia.
Moldova's location has made it a historic passageway between Asia
and southern Europe, as well as the victim of frequent warfare. Greeks,
Romans, Huns, and Bulgars invaded the area, which in the 13th century
became part of the Mongol empire. An independent Moldovan state
emerged briefly in the 14th century but fell under Ottoman Turkish rule
in the 16th century.
After the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, the eastern half of Moldova
(Bessarabia) between the Prut and the Dniester Rivers was ceded to
Russia, while Romanian Moldova (west of the Prut) remained with the Turks. Romania, which gained independence in 1878, took control of the Russian half of Moldova in 1918. The Soviet Union never recognized the seizure and created an autonomous Moldavian republic on the east side of the Dniester River in 1924. In 1940, Romania was forced to cede eastern Moldova to the U.S.S.R., which established the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. Romania sought to regain it by joining with Germany in the 1941 attack on the U.S.S.R. Moldova was ceded back to Moscow when hostilities between

Book Description
Anatoly Kulik and Susanna Pshizova have compiled an engaging and comprehensive, cross-national study that explores the stormy political developments in the post-Soviet countries. They gathered essays regarding the formation of the various new democratic institutions of Russia, the Baltic States, the Slavic States, and Moldova. The contributors are all distinguished scholars indigenous to their areas of focus; consequently, they are able to provide a true insider's perspective of the political climates of their respective lands. Kulik and Pshizova have organized the studies into seven generously detailed, nation-specific chapters that permit readers to see the individual party systems in both their sub-regional contexts as well as in their national ones.
