edit What is Molecular Biology?
Although names like Molecular Biology and Biochemistry are used in a fairly consistent manner, it is not always clear to outsiders what the primary concerns of a Molecular Biologist are, and how they differ from those of a Biochemist. Let's take an arbitrary metabolic reaction occurring in a cell, catalyzed by an enzyme. A molecular biologist would would want to know how the gene that expresses this enzyme is controlled: when is it expressed, what are the factors that turn its expression on and off? Is the enzyme stable once it has been generated, or does it rapidly break down in the cell? The relevant points of interest are the signals that control the presence of the enzyme in the cell, how the activity of this enzyme is controlled and balanced in the cell with respect to all the other processes that are occurring around it in the cell, or perhaps before and after its expression during the lifetime of the cell. A biochemist would be more interested in the role the enzyme plays in facilitating the reaction - the relative free energy of the reactants and products, and how the transition state is stabilized by the interactions between the reactants and the interior of the enzyme. In this case, the balance of energy between reactants and products, and the overall change in the kinetics of the reaction.

Molecular Biology is the basic science that seeks an understanding of life processes in terms of the properties and functions of molecules that make up living cells. The scope of questions addressed in Molecular Biology ranges from evolution to development to the regulation of gene expression. A career in molecular biology requires a strong background in biology as well as in chemistry, mathematics and physics. The Molecular Biology Major has been designed for three groups of students: (a) those who plan to enter a research career in molecular biology or related areas such as biochemistry, genetics, oncology, microbiology, cell biology or developmental biology; (b) pre-professional students who plan to enter either a research or clinical career in medicine or allied health fields; and (c) students who plan to teach secondary-school science. Students with other interests are also welcome, of course. To obtain information about the program or to declare a Molecular Biology Major, stop by the Molecular Biology Major office, located in 445 Henry Mall, room 118. Advisors are assigned through the program office and are located in many related departments throughout campus. Molecular biology advisors are especially competent to provide counsel regarding the major and career opportunities in molecular biology.

    history
    The process of cell death.
Apoptosis has been likened to programmed cell suicide, in that it is a natural process, for replacement of cells that have become a liability to the organism.
The word "apoptosis" came from ancient greek language and means "falling action".
    history
    Introduction
By definition, apoptosis and programmed cellular death are a kind of cellular self-destruction that demands energy and protein synthesis for its occurrence. It can be considered that apoptosis plays an opposite role of mitosis, in the sense that it is related with homeostasis in the physiological regulation of the tissues' size.
There are basically two cellular processes that activate its death program.
The first - programmed cellular death - is fundamental to organogenesis in embryonic development, and metamorphosis, as in amphibians.
The second - the apoptosis - consists of the destruction of the cells that represent a threat for the organism integrity. Both processes are "beneficial loss", decisive to the survival of organism.
    history
    Importance
Many cells of organism dies in benefit of the organism as a whole. In the same way that is necessary to generate new cells to maintain tissues and vital processes, the death of cells that became defective or without utility is indispensable. In the adult, if the multiplication of the cells is not precisely compensated, tissues and organs can grow without control, leading to the cancer.
