precalculus placement test - courses... Precalculus Placement Test What is the purpose of the Precalculus Placement Test? The Precalculus Placement Test will place you into the appropriate introductory mathematics course at UCI: Math 2A, the first quarter of the calculus series, or a course in precalculus, Math 1A or Math 1B. Math 1A is offered Fall quarter and Summer Session I, Math 1B is offered Fall and Winter quarters and both summer sessions, and Math 2A is offered every term. Should I take the Precalculus Placement Test or the Mathematical Analysis Placement Test? Precalculus Placement Test for placement in the appropriate Math course. Examples of precalculus courses include fourth-year high school math with trigonometry and math analysis and community college courses. Mathematical Analysis Placement Test for appropriate placement into Precalculus, Math 1A or Math 1B. Who needs to take Math 2A? Math 2A is required for the following majors:
  • Applied Ecology Engineering (all majors)
  • Biological Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Economics
  • Students majoring in Anthropology, International Studies, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, Social Science, or Sociology may apply calculus toward satisfaction of their major requirements.

Two versions of Projects for Precalculus are available from Saunders College Publishing. One version contains 26 projects, complete with solutions and teacher's notes. The other version contains 13 projects without solutions. The materials cover a wide range of topics that are typical to many precalculus courses. These projects are designed to help teach new topics or can be used for longer explorations into topics already covered in classes. We have designed the projects to help students as they prepare for some of the new emphases currently being used in calculus. Projects for Precalculus was an award winner in the 1996-97 Innovative Programs Using Technology (INPUT) Awards Competition. Mathematical Analysis
Grades Eight Through Twelve - Mathematics Content Standards. This discipline combines many of the trigonometric, geometric, and algebraic techniques needed to prepare students for the study of calculus and strengthens their conceptual understanding of problems and mathematical reasoning in solving problems. These standards take a functional point of view toward those topics. The most significant new concept is that of limits. Mathematical analysis is often combined with a course in trigonometry or perhaps with one in linear algebra to make a year-long precalculus course. Students are familiar with, and can apply, polar coordinates and vectors in the plane. In particular, they can translate between polar and rectangular coordinates and can interpret polar coordinates and vectors graphically. Students are adept at the arithmetic of complex numbers. They can use the trigonometric form of complex numbers and understand that a function of a complex variable can be viewed as a function of two real variables. They know the proof of DeMoivre's theorem.

    Precalculus
X9 (2 semester units in Mathematics)
This class is designed to expose students to concepts in basic and advanced algebra and some trigonometry. Topics such as logarithms, solving or graphing linear equations, and factoring a polynomial will be familiar to some students. However, this class goes into these topics at a more advanced level than a beginning or intermediate algebra class does. This course provides a good background for study in future calculus classes. Note: An integral component of this course is the interactive website MyMathLab. Please go to the MyMathLab website for complete system requirements.
Prerequisites: Two years of high school algebra, (or the equivalent of a beginning and an intermediate algebra class) and one year of high school geometry or its equivalent. Students must have access to a computer with a Windows operating system (98, 2000, ME, XP) and Internet Explorer 6.0. No other OS or browsers are supported.

(a) Basic understandings. (1) Foundation concepts for high school mathematics. As presented in Grades K-8, the basic understandings of number, operation, and quantitative reasoning; patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking; geometry; measurement; and probability and statistics are essential foundations for all work in high school mathematics. Students will continue to build on this foundation as they expand their understanding through other mathematical experiences. (2) Algebraic thinking and symbolic reasoning. Symbolic reasoning plays a critical role in algebra; symbols provide powerful ways to represent mathematical situations and to express generalizations. Students use symbols in a variety of ways to study relationships among quantities.
