I mmigrants in N ebraska Along Bergstrom’s travels throughout the United States, he spent about eight years in Nebraska. Leaving Michigan in 1888, he traveled by train to Omaha, Nebraska. Upon reaching the city, he spent the night in the Paxton Hotel, which is seen in this photograph. The following day he traveled to Valley, Nebraska, which is located right outside of Omaha, to stay with his brother Carl while he worked at the Whitmore Ranch and Stockyard. His sister Lina also lived in Valley, with her husband, a man by the name of Youngman. He also took a trip Kimball, Nebraska, located in the western half of the state, to visit his sister Tilda who was working for a doctor at the time. It was not uncommon for immigrants, especially those of Swedish descent, to travel and settle in this area. As early as the mid-1800s, the territory had become well traversed by a wide variety of people. For example, in 1847, Brigham Young and his Mormon followers traveled along the Platte River until they reached the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Then by 1849, “gold fever” had hit the nation and an estimated 65,000 people traveled through Nebraska on their way to California in search for riches beyond imagination. However, it wasn’t until after the 1850s that the state experienced its peak immigration period. In 1860, according to federal census records, the territory’s population was only around 29,000 people and by the time Nebraska was officially recognized as the 37
