Jean Batten- Part Two
Philippa Jane Ballantine Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Nov 1, 2000
Jean Batten spent her whole life being unconventional. Starting from small town New Zealand, she had in a short time become her countries favourite daughter. In 1936 she cemented her place in the history of the nation with her World beating trip from England to New Zealand a distance of14,224 miles, which she made in 11 days 45 minutes. It was the first direct flight from the United Kingdom to New Zealand, and her record would remain unbroken by any other pilot for fourty four years. It was also the fastest flight between Australia and New Zealand, and fastest between England and Australia. On 16th October 1934 she arrived in Auckland, where a crowd of thousands had gathered at Mangere airport. Everyone acknowledged that it was an amazing feat, and displayed her real skill in navigation . There were no GPS systems in those days, all Jean had was a map, compass and watch to guide her. However it had been a wearing experience on her, and during her tour of New Zealand, Jean suffered a nervous breakdown.

edit European Colonisation of New Zealand
Not long after New Zealand had been widely publicised about in Britain, attempts were made to colonise New Zealand. The first major passage to New Zealand was made available when a new New Zealand Company was set up in England. The company was not approved by the Colonial Office or the British Government, but the first ship, The Tory , departed England in May 1839. The New Zealand Company bought land cheaply off Maori in dishonest deals to gain as much land as possible before the British Government annexed New Zealand. The New Zealand Company initially set up a settlement at Wellington, but soon set up settlements at Wanganui in 1840, at New Plymouth in 1841 and at Nelson in 1842. The company also sent surveyors down the South Island to look at further sites for settlement. However, the Company soon got into financial difficulties. It had planned to buy land cheaply and sell it at high prices. It anticipated that a colony based on a higher land price would attract rich colonists. The profits from the sale of land were to be used to pay for free passage of the working-class colonists and for public works, churches and schools. For this scheme to work it was important to get the right proportion of labouring to propertied immigrants. In part, the failure of New Zealand Company plans was because this proportion was never achieved; there were always more labourers than employers.

New Zealand History
New Zealand History New Zealand Culture New Zealand Nature New Zealand Facts ... Early Settlers Although there is some uncertainty as to the exact timeframe, archaeological evidence seems to indicate that New Zealand was settled by Polynesians sometime around 1300 a.d. The first European to come to New Zealand (that we know of) was Dutchman Abel van Tasman who sailed to New Zealand from Australia in 1642. In 1769 Captain Cook claimed New Zealand for Britain. Many of the sealers and whalers who temporarily came to New Zealand to seek game stayed and became the first European settlers. The Treaty of Waitangi In the mid-19th century more Europeans arrived seeking more land. Maori resisted the European encroachment and, in the war which broke out in the 1860s, British troops suffered several defeats before overcoming Maori warriors. Settlers hacked farms out of the bush and soon it seemed that the long white cloud that covered New Zealand was made of wool. New Zealand had embarked on its century-long ride upon the sheep's back. Social progress accompanied increasing prosperity. In 1893 New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote. Old-age pensions were introduced in 1898. New Zealand became renowned as a social laboratory.

The early New Zealand developed a unique ecosystem because of a lack of predators. This meant several species of bird became flightless through natural evolution - one of which is the nocturnal Kiwi, a national symbol of the country. Another fabled creature was the Moa - this was a large flightless bird that closely resembled an ostrich. Coincidentally, a life-size statue of the Moa can be seen in Queenstown - and it's a very big bird. Sadly, this is all modern day visitors will get to see of the big bird as it was hunted into extinction.

Jean Gardner Batten
Jean Gardner Batten, a strikingly beautiful New Zealand woman, became one of the world's most popular and famous pilots when she established several individual flight distance records in the 1930s. Some of her marks would stand for almost half a century, while others she would better on her own. Batten was extremely close to her mother and thrived on parental attention. She also liked the international acclaim she received. Regardless of her public image, however, Batten possessed some dark qualities. Sometimes she used her feminine charms to manipulate men into providing her with the means to achieve her record-setting goals. She was also very eccentric and reclusive, which when coupled with her glamour and fame, was why Ian Mackersey, Batten's leading biographer, dubbed Batten "The Garbo of the Skies." Batten was born in Rotorua, New Zealand, on September 15, 1909, to a modest dentist's family. From her earliest days, Jean seemed predestined to become a great aviator. In a seemingly serendipitous act, Batten's mother pinned a photo of the famous French pilot Louis Bleriot on the wall next to Jean's crib.
