Norse Mythology
General
Norse, Viking or Scandinavian mythology comprises the indigenous pre-Christian religion, beliefs and legends of the Scandinavian peoples, including those who settled on Iceland, where most of the written sources for Norse mythology were assembled. Norse mythology is the best-preserved version of the older common Germanic paganism, which also includes the closely related Anglo-Saxon mythology. Germanic mythology, in its turn, developed from an earlier Indo-European mythology.
Norse mythology is a collection of beliefs and stories shared by Northern Germanic tribes. It had no one set of doctrinal beliefs. The mythology was orally transmitted in the form of poetry and our knowledge about it is mainly based on the Eddas and other medieval texts written down during and after Christianization.
Some aspects of Norse mythology passed into Scandinavian folklore and have survived to modern day times. Others have recently been reinvented or reconstructed as Germanic neopaganism. The mythology also remains as an inspiration in literature (see Norse mythological influences on later literature) as well as on stage productions and movies.

Did you know Tolkien was heavily influenced by Scandinavian mythology when writing "The Lord of the Ring?" Norse paganism refers to the religion of the Scandinavian people in the period prior to Christianity. Scandinavian paganism encompasses countries like Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, and of course Scandinavia. Scandinavian spiritually was orally transmitted. It is thus difficult to exactly know what were the exact beliefs and traditions Norsemen followed. Christian scholars during the medieval era wrote some texts referring to the beliefs of Scandinavian paganism: they were however subjective in their judgement of the religion. Conclusions can nevertheless be drawn from what these missionary reports on the Eddas (relation of poems on different Norse heroes and deities), sagas (stories) and folklore that have been transmitted to modern times. adparams.getadspec('c_billboard1');

Why has modern culture come to use them and distort them in to a vast array of creature types?
What were this creature like according to the original mythologies?
Please provide links or sources for answering these questions as all I can find on the net so far are gaming strategy guides :( please help, question I can't find answers to eat away at my little soul! BigBlueHead 01-29-04, 10:19 AM WCF: Although most countries have their own mythology, a lot of modern "mythological" literary concepts come from a few recognizable sources.
Most notable of these that I've come across were the works of Paracelsus, which seem to be very popular with the RPG crowd, although mostly indirectly.
Check out "A Book on Nymphs, Gnomes, Giants, Dwarves, Incubi and Succubae, Stars and Signs" by Theophrastus Paracelsus if you can find it - I've been unable to find an online copy, and I don't feel like spending the money on a paper copy if I did find one.
I believe Amazon has a few collections of his works for sale:

part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5. "'way through zero' is dedicated to individuals who burn the flags of nations."
more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/norse_mythology the music, lyrics and artwork of this cd should be seen as a conceptual work. the lyrics in icelandic tell a story of a man's anger evolving. in the beginning this person is pessimistic, moody, powerless and always hiding his head in the sand. the second part shows his rising anger toward the powers that oppress him - part 3 shows the pure hatred which seemingly absorbs his soul and drives him into madness. but then in part 4 a process of analysis and rethinking takes place: he realizes that the only way to fight his oppressors is to change one's perception - power is only existent as long as individuals give it the right to exist. the man finds peace as soon as the vicious circle is broken. "the beginning of all revolutions - and maybe the only real revolution existing"
within the first minute you will be haunted by the story's musical visualization. each of the five parts stands for itself, showing the evolution of the man's mental state: from depressed to aggressive and then finally released. various astounding sounds are found within its isolated shell - pulsing sub-basses, synth layers over a driving rhythmic sequence, noise drones, ambience with high frequency sonic attacks and silent melodic phrases. if we should dare a comparison then the scandinavian dark industrial sound isn't that far from the 'way through zero'.
