Upon Olav's death, his son Harald was crowned as King Harald V. Norway was a nonbelligerent during World War I, but as a result of the German invasion and occupation during World War II, Norwegians generally became skeptical of the concept of neutrality and turned instead to collective security. Norway was one of the signers of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949 and was a founding member of the United Nations. The first UN General Secretary, Trygve Lie, was a Norwegian. Under the terms of the will of Alfred Nobel, the Storting (Parliament) elects the five members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee who award the Nobel Peace Prize to champions of peace.

Home Study Abroad Norway Archeological finds indicate that there were people in Norway about 12,000 years ago. They probably came from more southern regions, that is northern Germany, and traveled further north along the Norwegian coastline. In the 9th century Norway consisted of a number of petty kingdoms. According to tradition, Harald Fairhair gathered the small kingdoms into one in 872 with the battle of Hafrsfjord. He became the first king of a united Norway. The Viking age (8th to 11th centuries) was one of unification and expansion. The Norwegians established settlements in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and parts of the British Islands, and attempted to settle at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada (it is the Vinland of The Saga of Eric the Red). Norwegians founded the modern day Irish cities of Limerick and Waterford and established trading communities near the Celtic settlements of Cork and Dublin which later became Ireland's two most important cities. After Denmark-Norway was attacked by England, it entered into an alliance with Napoleon, and in 1814 found itself on the losing side in the Napoleonic Wars and in dire economic conditions. The Dano-Norwegian Oldenburg king was forced to cede Norway to the king of Sweden. Norway took this opportunity to declare independence, adopted a constitution based on American and French models, and elected the Danish crown prince Christian Fredrik as king on May 17, 1814. However, Sweden militarily forced Norway into a personal union with Sweden, establishing Charles XIII of Sweden as king or Norway (as Carl II). The heirs to the throne being still in their infancy, the country was ruled for a long period by a council of regency and by incompetent princes of foreign birth. In 1397 the three Scandinavian kingdoms entered into a union under articles signed at Kalmar. Sweden later withdrew, but Norway and Denmark remained united until 1814. Copenhagen became the seat of the royal government for both kingdoms, for the terms of the articles of union, according to which complete equality was to exist between the two countries, were soon forgotten. Norwegian affairs were neglected, shipbuilding almost ceased, and Norwegian merchant shipping and naval power fell into decay, which was hastened by another calamity , the Black Death. This great plague, which harried Europe from 1346 to 1351 and which, it is estimated, swept away one-fourth of its population, appeared in Norway in 1349, causing an enormous loss of life. The Norwegian historian Ernst Sars states that it was a hundred and fifty years before the population of Norway was again equal to what it had been at the outbreak of the plague. Prosperity vanished and the people's spirit of enterprise was wrecked; many of the leaders died; and in many districts there were so few people left that the fields could not be tilled and the income from even the larger estates was very small.
