Nuclear chemistry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Nuclear chemistry is a subfield of chemistry dealing with radioactivity , nuclear processes and nuclear properties. * It is the chemistry of radioactive elements such as the actinides radium and radon together with the chemistry associated with equipment (such as nuclear reactors ) which are designed to perform nuclear processes. This includes the corrosion of surfaces and the behaviour under conditions of both normal and abnormal operation (such as during an accident ). An important area is the behaviour of objects and materials after being placed into a waste store or otherwise disposed of.
  • the study of the chemical effects resulting from the absorption of radiation within living animals, plants, and other materials. The radiation chemistry controls much of radiation biology as radiation has an effect on living things at the molecular scale, to explain it another way the radiation alters the biochemicals within an organism, the alteration of the biomolecules then changes the chemistry which occurs within the organism, this change in biochemistry then can lead to a biological outcome. As a result nuclear chemistry greatly assists the understanding of medical treatments (such as

It includes spontaneous and induced radioactivity, the fission or splitting of nuclei, and their fusion, or union; also the properties and behaviour of the reaction products and their separation and analysis. The reactions involving nuclei are usually accompanied by large energy changes, far greater than those of chemical reactions; that are carried out in nuclear reactors for electric power production and manufacture of radioactive isotopes for medical use, also (in research work) in cyclotrons. • Nuclear chemistry is just arithmetic with two variables - charge and mass. proton + electron = neutron 2 protons + 2 neutrons = alpha particle(Helium-4 Nucleus) electron = beta particle energy = gamma ray emission proton = neutron + positron
    edit Nuclear Stability
    • Anything with 83 protons (Bismuth) or more is radioactive. Small stable molecules have a neutron:proton ratio of approximately 1:1. More massive ones have a ratio of 1.5:1. Isotopes can also be radioactive, an example of this is carbon-14 which is used in carbon dating only has 6 protons but is radioactive .
    edit Half Life
The half life of an isotope is time it take for half of a sample to decay. It can very from very small times(fraction of second) to millions of years. Knowing the half life of a substance allows radioactive dating to be done. The relative abundance of the isotopes in a sample compared to the original abundance can be used to determain the age of the specimen.
    • ln(percent remaining) = -k(time) half-life = ln(2/k)

    • the chemistry of radioactive elements such as the actinides radium and radon together with the chemistry associated with equipment (such as nuclear reactors ) which are designed to perform nuclear processes. Nuclear reactors can be "high-flux" reactors, mainly used to make radio-active isotopes for medical or scientific use, or "low-flux" reactors, mainly used for power generation. ( Flux in this content means the density of neutrons per unit of volume.) These processes include the corrosion of surfaces and the behaviour under conditions of both normal and abnormal operation (such as during an accident ). An important area is the behaviour of objects and materials after being placed into a waste store or otherwise disposed of.
