A) Electromagnetic Radiation. light (range of frequencies radio waves to grays); travels at speed of light (3 x 108 m/s); streams of massless particles
http://www.unit5.org/christjs/Nuclear_Chemistry.htm
Nuclear Chemistry RADIATION Fact Sheet A) Electromagnetic Radiation
  • light (range of frequencies: radio waves to g -rays) travels at speed of light (3 x 10 m/s) streams of massless particles (photons)
Photons effect depends on their energy , which increases as the wavelength is shorter (higher frequency) c = f l E = h f Amount of radiation depends on the intensity (i.e. the number of photons). Example: You can get a sunburn in 20 minutes or spend weeks behind glass (which cuts out the UV, but lets through the visible light) without a tan. B) Streams of Particles with rest mass traveling at various speeds) C) Radioactive Disintegration
  • half-life table band of stability activity - rate at which radioactive nuclei emits particles one Becquerel (Bq) is 1 radioactive disintegration / second strong force [aka binding energy: holds nucleus together - recall protons want to repel each other]
D) Biological Effect
  • Many factors to consider...

    DATING OF ARTIFACTS
    SOME REFERENCES FOR SOURCES
    Definitions
Radiocarbon dating: radioactive carbon decays to nitrogen with a half-life of 5730 years. In dead material, the decayed 14C is not replaced and its concentration in the object decreases slowly. To obtain a truly absolute chronology, corrections must be made, provided by measurements on samples of know age. The most suitable types of sample for radiocarbon dating are charcoal and well-preserved wood, although leather, cloth, paper, peat, shell and bone can also be used. Because of the somewhat short half-life of 14C, radiocarbon dating is not applicable to samples with ages greater than about 50,000 years, because the remaining concentration would be too small for accurate measurement. Thermoluminescence dating: this method is associated with the effect of the high energy radiation emitted as a result of the decay or radioactive impurities. Because of the half-lives of 238U, 232nd, and 40K are very long, their concentrations in the object, and hence the radiation dose they provide per year, have remained fairly constant. The most suitable type of sample for thermoluminescence dating is pottery, though the date gotten will be for the last time the object was fired. Application of this method of age determination is limited to those periods of pottery and fired clay availability ( from about 6000 BC to the present).

A major part of the work in the field of nuclear chemistry and technology concerns nuclear reactors and the nuclear fuel cycle. Thus, we are studying nuclear fuel integrity and reactor chemistry as well as severe reactor accidents and nuclear waste management. The consequences of reactor accidents are studied in experiments and by using computer simulations. Our work on the nuclear fuel cycle is concentrated on leaching of spent nuclear fuel, radionuclide migration, actinide chemistry in groundwater systems, complexation between radionuclides and complexing agents (natural or man-made) present in or in the vicinity of a nuclear waste repository and transport of radionuclides caused by bacteriae. Computer simulations of the processes and studies of the impact of uncertainties are made as well. We also make extensive investigations of new extractants and solvent extraction processes developed for partitioning and transmutation of nuclear fuel.
Other fields of research include basic solvent extraction and actinide (mainly plutonium) chemistry, development of solvent extraction equipment, radiation shielding and space radiation, the chemistry of the heaviest elements, nuclear detector development and new methods for cancer therapy using high-energy heavy-charged particles or targeted radioimmunotherapy.
