Registered Nurses
Significant Points
  • Registered nurses constitute the largest health care occupation, with 2.5 million jobs. About 59 percent of jobs are in hospitals. The three major educational paths to registered nursing are a bachelor’s degree, an associate degree, and a diploma from an approved nursing program. Registered nurses are projected to generate about 587,000 new jobs over the 2006-16 period, one of the largest numbers among all occupations; overall job opportunities are expected to be excellent, but may vary by employment setting.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Registered nurses (RNs), regardless of specialty or work setting, treat patients, educate patients and the public about various medical conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients’ family members. RNs record patients’ medical histories and symptoms, help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operate medical machinery, administer treatment and medications, and help with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. RNs teach patients and their families how to manage their illness or injury, explaining post-treatment home care needs; diet, nutrition, and exercise programs; and self-administration of medication and physical therapy. Some RNs work to promote general health by educating the public on warning signs and symptoms of disease. RNs also might run general health screening or immunization clinics, blood drives, and public seminars on various conditions.

welcome to the department of nursing
    Chairperson's Message
Welcome to the Department of Nursing at Southern Connecticut State University! We thank you for your interest in our profession and specifically our programs. The need for nurses, particularly registered nurses educated at the baccalaureate degree level, has perhaps never been higher. Nurses with a baccalaureate degree are prepared to practice in a wide variety of healthcare settings and are able to pursue graduate studies in nursing to practice in advanced roles. At SCSU we have been preparing nurses for entry-level practice at the BSN level since 1969 and have offered graduate degrees in nursing since 1989. Please visit the rest of our site for specific information about our programs. SCSU nursing graduates are readily employed in area healthcare agencies and many hold leadership positions. Since their establishment, the Department of Nursing's programs have received continuous national accreditation and have been continually approved by the Connecticut State Board of Examiners for Nursing. Our baccalaureate graduates are very successful on the national licensing exam for RNs and, in fact, the average score over the past five years has been above the state and national averages. Graduates from our Family Nurse Practitioner Program also score above the national average on the national certification exam.
