California's first oceanographers: The Chumash Indians In studying past cultures and especially early California cultures, it strikes me how little we know about the science of these people. As we'll learn in our discussion of the Polynesians, these ocean-going cultures sure knew what they were doing when it came to the ocean. They were able to navigate using clouds and waves and sea birds and they knew when and where particular marine species could be found. In some areas, their knowledge of

Bigelow Women Oceanographers
Daniel Fayen
Recently two women research scientists at Bigelow Dr. Patricia "Patty" Matrai and Cindy Pilskaln were recognized for their achievements in "Oceanography" the marine sciences' most prestigious journal. The March 2005 (Vol.18, #1) issue of "Oceanography" was a special issue devoted to the accomplishments made by women marine scientists throughout the world. The catalyst of the magazine's focus on women's' achievements in marine scientists was the editor of "Oceanography" magazine Ellen S. Kappel's astonishment at the dearth of women authors in upcoming issues. Kappel's belief in devoting an entire issue to women oceanographers was that reading the autobiographical sketches of Bigelow's Matrai and Pilskaln, along with roughly 150 others, would help identify barriers to career advancement encountered by women in oceanography. She also hoped readers would be inspired and discussion might ensue, in light of the issue, to address ways to narrow the gender gap existing in the oceanographic sciences (currently 23 per-cent of all marine scientists an academia and employed in research are women according to a 2002 National Science Foundation poll). Matrai is a senior research scientist at Bigelow, and has been at the McKown Point facility since 1995. A native of Chile, Matrai said, "I became interested in oceanography initially for very unscientific reasonsI loved the beach and didn't want to be stuck inside. I was also inspired by a friend of my parents who was into chemical engineering.

URI Biological Oceanographers Study the
Predator-Prey Relationship between
Sand Shrimp and Flounder
Narragansett, R.I . December 13, 2002 While the stock of winter flounder, as a whole, is recovering from overexploitation, the populations in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, and Niantic River, Connecticut, remain depleted. Elevated water temperature seems to be the culprit, elevating the metabolism and consumption rate of predators that feast on the juvenile flounder. One predator that seems to be making a negative impact on the survival of flounder is the sand shrimp.
URI Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) professor Jeremy Collie has received a $40,000 grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to study the effects of water temperature on predator-prey interaction in Narragansett Bay and the Niantic River and determine why the stock of winter flounder continues to decline. Working with Collie on this project is GSO doctoral candidate David Taylor.
The common sand shrimp lives in the Atlantic waters from Newfoundland to Florida and is an important component of estuarine systems, serving as both predator and prey. Elevated winter water temperature possibly increases the number of sand shrimp simply because warmer temperatures allow greater numbers to survive the winter.

Navy oceanographers hold reunion
Sea Technology Jun 2000
Seven past Oceanographers of the Navy-and other senior oceanography officials-returned to the U.S. Naval Observatory grounds for the first reunion in the institution's 156-yearold history. The group discussed the current state of Naval oceanographyand what the future holds-and was joined by two distinguished guest speakers, Congressman Curt Weldon (R-Pennsylvania), a staunch supporter of the oceans, and Dr. D. James Baker, under secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, and administrator of the NOAA. "This reunion is an opportunity for the Navy to take advantage of the tremendous experience available from this distinguished group," said RAdm. Richard West, the current Oceanographer of the Navy and the host. "Combined, this group has almost 400 years of extremely valuable experience."

Finding Gold at the
Bottom of the Bay Betting on Big Science By Michael W. Fincham There is a weather under the Bay, it seems, and it features some of the same events we watch on the evening newscast, including storms, cyclones, high-pressure systems, low-pressure systems and fronts of all kinds. I t will be nearly midnight when they finally throw the ScanFish off the boat. Standing on the stern of a research vessel as it pulls slowly out to sea, Bill Boicourt can see a string of lights receding behind him. They mark the bridges that stretch like bright ropes laid across the southern gateway into the Chesapeake Bay. The oceanographer is back out on the ocean again, at least for a little while. Tall, athletic and highly verbal, Boicourt has some salt in his hair and thirty years of research trips on his resume. He's out on the back deck, the working end of the

http://www-geology.ucdavis.edu/~sumner/Teaching/GEL116f00/duckies.html
Why oceanographers love plastic duckies
These days, a huge number of plastic and rubber items manufactured in Asia are shipped in containers to markets and customers in North America. Often the containers are stacked on the decks of ships, rather than stowed down in the hold. In rough weather in the North Pacific, containers have been known to tear loose and be washed overboard. In 1990, a container vessel lost five containers overboard in a storm. Four of them apparently tore open in the process, releasing 61,000 Nike running shoes into the Pacific Ocean. These shoes float, and several months later, hundreds of them began to wash ashore along the coast of North America from Alaska to Oregon. Beachcombers gathered them up and arranged swap meets to match left and right shoes, then use or sell the pairs. Oceanographers were delighted: here was a unique chance to plot ocean currents and surface drift on scale that could never have been done on a scientific budget. Scientists tapped into the information network of beachcombers, and the points of landfall of at least1600 Nike shoes were recorded exactly. This is about the same rate of recovery as oceanographers get from their drift bottles, but no oceanographer can afford to drop 61,280 drift bottles in one place at one time! By the time the data were plotted, the drift of the North Pacific was recorded in finer detail than ever. Years later, far-floating Nike shoes from the spill are still being recovered as far away as Hawaii, because the surviving floaters were turned southward into the main Pacific clockwise circulation.
