1. Oklahoma History - Establishment Of The Order Of Discalced Carmelites In Oklahom
History of the Carmelite Order located in Oklahoma.
http://www.oksister.com/oklahoma_history.htm
Home About Us Prayer Requests Carmelite Saints ... Villa Teresa Shop Mission to the Immigrants: Establishment of the Order of Discalced Carmelites in Oklahoma By: Michael M. Smith; October 1981 1927 Souvenir Booklet The revolution which ousted Diaz in 1910, however, initiated another period of unbridled violence, xenophobia, and anti-clericalism. Throughout Mexico, revolutionaries desecrated churches, killed clergymen and nuns, and destroyed monasteries and convents. Once again the Carmelites were forced to flee the country or go into hiding. Throughout the violent stage of revolution, many Carmelites in Mexico returned to Spain, fled to Cuba, or sought safety in the United States. For the first four years of the conflict, the Discalced Carmelites in Torreon, Coahuila, had escaped the violence which rent other areas of the republic, and during the week before Easter, 1914, they quietly prepared for the forthcoming Holy Week solemnities. Four Spanish priests from the Province of Aragon-Valencia staffed the mission and church. The small community included Fr. Cirilio Corbat, the superior; Fr. Luis Benages; Fr. Bernardo Broton; and Fr. Domingo Pitarch, who was in Mexico City at the time. Thus, on April 8, 1914, the three Carmelites entered the United States. They had little money and no friends in this country. They did not speak English and had no idea where they would stay. Initially, they did not intend to remain permanently in the United States; they sought only a temporary refuge until they could go on to Spain or perhaps return to Mexico. They spent their first night in El Paso in a hotel, thereby depleting their financial resources. The next day, the Jesuits who had charge of the Church of the Virgin of Guadalupe took them into their house. Hoping to find a place to stay with members of their own order, the three Carmelites decided to go to Chicago, where, they had heard, the Discalced Carmelites had established a house. The Jesuits arranged for their transportation by train, and on April 11 they departed for Chicago.

History of Oklahoma
Before modern settlers and Indians came to Oklahoma, the land was occupied by hunter-agriculture peoples. Near Anadarko, archeologists discovered the bones of a mammoth and several spear points. They estimate the mammoth was killed more than 11,000 years ago. The spear point was identified as belonging to an ancient group of hunters called the Clovis culture. From 500 to 1300 AD, the Spiro Mound Builders lived in an area just west of the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. Items left in burial mounds show the Mound Builders to be skilled artists. Oklahoma's written history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through this area. At that time, it was the home of the Plains Indian tribes, such as the Osage, Kiowa, Apache and Comanche. In 1803, Oklahoma was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In the 1830s, the federal government forced the Five Civilized Tribes to leave their homelands. These tribes were living in the southeastern part of the U.S. They had to walk to Oklahoma over a trail that became known as the "Trail of Tears." Many men, women and children died during this long and treacherous trip. Once these people settled here, Oklahoma became Indian Territory.

Although one of the youngest states in the nation, Oklahoma is a land that reaches far back in time. Oklahoma's recorded history began in 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado ventured through the area on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." Coronado was a little too early because there was gold in "them thar" hills but it was black!!! Texas Tea, black gold, sweet crude. The land that would eventually be known as Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Beginning in the 1820s, the Five Civilized Tribes from the southeastern United States were relocated (read = forcibly sojourned from their rightful homeland by President Andew Jackson, nice man) to Indian Territory over numerous routes, the most famous being the Cherokee "Trail of Tears." Forced off their ancestral lands by state and federal governments, the tribes suffered great hardships, i.e., many people died, during the rigorous trips west. The survivors eventually recovered from the dislocation through hard work and communal support. Gradually, new institutions and cultural adaptations emerged and began a period of rapid developments often called the "Golden Age" of Indian Territory.

I can't believe it's September already! Where did August go? We have been homeschooling a couple of weeks now, and just took our first "major" field trip. Since we're studying Oklahoma history this term, I thought it would be good to see some of the historic sites around our lovely state. So last weekend we drove east to Oklmulgee , Muskogee, and then on to Tahlequah. (If those aren't Indian names, I don't know what are!) We just happened to be in Tahlequah for the
