THE RELIGIOUS CHARACTER OF THE ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES
In the beginning, the ceremonies had a religious character and were connected with agricultural worship, germination or with the worship of a god or hero. At these religious festivals, the practice of the athletic games was established. The athletes came at the stadium to compete for a self-governing value that came from within them and their victory was an offer to the god. The combination between religion and athletic games showed that victory was a gift from god and that any kind of violation of the rules of an honest contest was sacrilegious and, consequently, an act of blasphemy.
Initially, the Olympiad had a funereal character and Pisatans gave honors to Pelops, the king of Pisa, and the mythical founder of the games, at Olympia. Close to the temple of Zeus there was a sacred and revered place, the Pelopeion, where a black ram was sacrificed every year in the honor of Pelops.
In antiquity, there was no other people, except for the ancient Greeks, with such a passionate love for sports. They believed that athletics were not only entertainment, but also exercises for the body and mind.

Olympic Games - 1896 Athens
It is universally accepted that Baron de Coubertin masterminded the Modern Olympic Games. It was fitting that first 'Modern' celebration was fittingly held in Athens, the scene of those ancient games. What struck me about the history of the Olympic Games is that the early celebrations, with their amateur status, produced more fascinating sporting incidents than the slick professional games of the last 20 years. On 6 April 1896, the American James Connolly won the triple jump to become the first Olympic champion in more than 1,500 years. For these first Olympics, winners were awarded a crown of olive branches and a silver medal. The people of Athens greeted the Games with great enthusiasm. Their support was rewarded when a Greek, Spiridon Louis, won their most popular event, the marathon. Naturally, the race stated in the city of Marathon and Louis must have been able to enjoy his fantastic reception since he was 6 minutes clear at the end.

    Heraea Games
The ancient 'Heraea Games ' (also spelled 'Heraia ') is the first sanctioned (and recorded) women's athletic competition to be held in Olympic Stadium , possibly in the Olympic year, prior to the men's events. It is dated as early as the 6th century BC . Some texts, including Pausanias 's Description of Greece , c. 175 AD , state that Hippodameia gathered a group known as the " Sixteen Women " and made them administrators of the Heraea Games, out of gratitude for her marriage to Pelops Other texts indicate that the "Sixteen Women" were peace-makers from Pisa and Elis and, because of their political competence, became administrators of the Heraea Games Like the men's competition, Heraea originally consisted of foot races only. The Heraea champions won olive crowns, cow or ox meat from the animal sacrificed to Hera and the right to dedicate statues inscribed with their names or painted portraits of themselves on the columns of Hera's temple. It is still apparent where the portraits were attached on the

Beijing Games 2008 - Olympic Games History Olympics or The Olympic Games is a multi-sports event which takes place once in four years and comprises of winter and summer games. It is an international event and almost all the countries in the globe participate in the games. The first Olympic game was held in the year 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. The games were held in Greece till 393 AD. Subsequently in 1896, Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin, a French nobleman revived the games which heralded the beginning of the Modern Olympic Games. Starting from 1896, Games of the Olympiad or The Summer Olympics were held once in four years except during the World War 1 and 2. The Olympic Winter Games, a special edition of winter sports was first held in 1924. In the beginning, both summer and winter editions of The Olympic Games were held simultaneously. From 1944 onwards the summer and winter games have been held two years apart. Find more info at www.olympicsresource.info The origin of the ancient Olympic Games was surrounded by many legends. The ancient Greek concept of Olympic Truce is one such legend associated with The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games reached their zenith during fifth and sixth century BC. The Olympic Games were held in honour of Pelops a mythical king and divine hero of the Greeks. Poems were written and statues were created immortalizing the winners of the events in the Olympic Games. Milo of Croton, a wrestler in the sixth century BC, was the only victorious athlete in six Olympic Games.
