Virginia Opossum Didelphis virginiana Scientific Name: Didelphis virginiana . The genus Didelphis is from the Greek dis (twice) + delphys (womb) = (two wombs), in reference to the paired reproductive tract of females found in North America's only marsupial. The Latinized specific name virginiana (of Virginia), refers to the state from which the first scientific specimen was collected and described.
Identification
Opossums ( Didelphis virginiana ), America's only marsupial (the name "marsupial" derives from the Greek word for "bag" or "pouch.) represents one of the oldest families in the animal kingdom. Practically a living fossil, this marsupial is the only native mammal in the United States that carries its young in a pouch. The unmistakable opossum is generally about the size of a plump house cat with a long, naked prehensile tail, a white face with pointed snout, and naked leaflike ears. Opossum feet are shaped somewhat like human hands with an opposable thumb on the back feet. The coarse, grizzled fur is generally grayish in color but can vary from white to brown to black. Opossums may weigh as much as 14 pounds; males average 6 to 7 pounds and females average 4 pounds. The mouth contains 50 teeth — more than are found in any other North American mammal. Canine teeth (fangs) are prominent. General Biology, Reproduction, and Behavior

Opossum
by Valerie (November 6, 2002) There are not too many mammals that frequent our gardens and yard, as we live in an urban environment and have a relatively small yard. However, we have on many occasions hosted the nightly forages of opossums. They are nocturnal, but can often be found still hanging around after the sun comes up. Opossums belong to a group of New World marsupials which includes about 65 species. Only the Virginia, or common, opossum occurs north of Mexico. Opossums do not hibernate, but may sleep a lot through cold weather. In their northernmost range, they often lose parts of ears or the tip of their tail to frostbite, as these have no fur and the opossum is not adapted to extremely cold temperatures. Although they look like big rats, they are really related to kangaroos, koalas and Tasmanian devils. The fur of opossums is usually gray and grizzled, but can range from almost pure white to almost black. They are sometimes hunted for both their fur and their meat, but are said to be rather oily fare. Opossums have a constantly wet nose due to glands that secrete moisture. Their eyesight is not all that great but they have a good sense of smell and find most of their food through that sense. Because opossums are not very fast animals (they can often be seen "waddling" along at a slow pace), they often have encounters with predators. Although opossums have more teeth (50) in their mouths than any other land mammal in North America, only the large canines are dangerous. Opossums will sometimes bite in self defense and can cause injury to a dog or cat. However, they transmit few diseases, and it is extremely rare for them to carry rabies. One reason might be that their body temperature is lower than most placental mammals. Another might be that, through the effects of evolution, they are more remotely related to other mammals.

OPOSSUMS The name "opossum" is derived from an Algonquian Indian word "apasum", meaning white animal. While there are over 65 species of opossums, only one, the Didelphis Virginiana, more commonly known as the Virginia opossum, is native to North America. Didelphis means double womb and refers to the pouch as a secondary place of development for the infant opossums. Virginiana refers to the state of Virginia where the opossum was first observed by early English colonists. However, opossums today can be found throughout most of the United States and portions of Canada and Mexico. Whether rural, residential or in the wilderness, opossums are a benefit to any area they inhabit. Their diet includes all types of bugs and insects including cockroaches, crickets and beetles. They love snails. They also eat mice and rats. The nocturnal opossum is attracted to our neighborhoods by the availability of water, pet food left out at night and overripe, rotting fruit that has fallen from trees. The opossum in turn helps keep our neighborhoods clean and free of unwanted, harmful garden pests and rodents, which may carry diseases. The opossum has earned the title of "Nature's Little Sanitation Engineer." Opossum Facts:
North America's only marsupial (female has a pouch) mammal. The female carries and nurses her young in her marsupium until they are about 2 to 3 months old; then they are carried on her back another 1 to 2 months on her back whenever they are away from the den.

However, if cornered, these creatures do have many teeth and, as with any wild animal, they may bite, The benefits of opossums far outweigh the problems they cause; but because of their high visibility in our neighborhoods a little knowledge about them may result in greater tolerance of these little nomads. When the young opossums are born, they are little more than embryos. After birth, they crawl into the mother's pouch where they nurse and mature for about 10 weeks, They become independent of the mother at about 3 months of age. Many common opossum sightings involve the mother opossum waddling along with 10 or 12 furry little creatures attached to her. Often the babies fall off, accounting for many "orphans" brought to wildlife rehabbers. Even more frequent sightings involve opossums n roads, having been hit by cars. Concerned citizens are urged to check the dead opossum. If female, there may still living babies inside the pouch. Thousands of baby opossums have been saved by those attentive citizens who have transported the dead mother with her living babies still attached, to the nearest wildlife rehabilitation center. Opossums are perhaps the most fascinating of all the wildlife in our area and are an important and beneficial part of the "wildlife scene".

Opossums
Opossums ( Didelphis virginiana ) are the definitive host of S. neurona . Opossums shed sporocysts, which are the infective stage for both aberrant hosts, horses, and the natural intermediate hosts, the identity of which are unknown. A flurry of recent research activity has revealed that S. neurona and S. falcatula are distinct species. The geographic distribution of the occurrence of EPM in horses closely matches the geographic range of opossums. This range includes most of South America, all of Central America and most of the US and southern Canada. Regions of the US in which there are no opossums have low rates of both exposure and central nervous system infection with EPM. Those infections that do occur are likely a result of either exposure in horses having left the area, or the rare exposure from hay, grain or other substances originating from an endemic area. Opossums have roamed the New World for 170 million years, predating dinosaurs. As recently as the turn of the century, opossums in North America were limited in range to the Southeastern United States. However, in the last century, opossums have spread to fill most of the US, and parts of Southern Canada. This increase in population reflects the adaptability of this species. Garbage and other waste is a favorite food source, and declines in fur trapping have resulted in a population explosion of this pest species. The overpopulation of opossums has inevitably resulted in an increase of EPM, and probably has other ecological implications.

More recently, opossums come to our back porch on late winter and early spring evenings for spilled birdseeds and usually shamble off instead of playing dead if I open the door. They also like to visit our compost pile for tasty tidbits. By April, those that have survived the winter are not only very hungry, especially if it has been unusually cold, but if they are females, they are already carrying little ones in their pouches. Most studies show that opossums cannot survive outside if the temperature dips below 19 degrees Fahrenheit, so they spend those cold days and nights tucked in a warm den that once belonged to a woodchuck or other burrow-digging animal. They line it with grass and leaves, which they gather by grasping them in their mouths and then passing them under their body to their tail. They use their tail to transport the materials to the den, a behavior that even youngsters at 88 days of age can master. Despite such dire predictions, opossums have managed to expand their range 500 miles northward in the eastern United States since the Colonial Era. Before European settlement, they lived no farther north than Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Today they are found as far north as Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and southern New England. But in those northern areas, they are liable to be suburban and urban residents where garbage and fruit-bearing shrubs and trees are readily available, according to a study by L.L. Kanda in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Opossums
Scientific Name : Didelphis virginiana Possums' or grinners as some people call them, are relatively harmless. They would rather run than fight and are very helpful in being nature's four legged garbage cans. They will eat almost anything. Control Issues: Solutions to Common Possum problems 1. I have an opossum in my trash can Keep trash cans covered. Possums frequently become trapped inside trash cans as they search for food. If you find one inside and you have not been exposed to its saliva or other body fluids, then simply kick the can over on its side and walk away. Keep children and pets away as well. Possums won't leave until they feel safe. If possible wait until nighfall to do this. 2. Possum on Fence or Opossum won't move Contrary to popular belief, possums don't play dead. However when frightened, opossums will sit there and hiss with their mouth open. If you find a possum who won't move, don't assume that he is injured. Most often the opossum is frightened and will simply hold his ground and defend himself. Simply walk away and keep children and pets away. (Of course, you should make sure the opossum has not bitten any pet or person if it has, contact your health dept). The opossum will move on when he feels safe.
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis
I have learned that there is a parasite that is associated with opossums. The possums contaminate grain with their feces, the horses eat it and get infected with the parasite with then attacks the horse's central central nerve system. It can be very expensive to treat with estimates ranging from $200.00 - $800.00 per month for six months. The opossum gets it from the muscles of birds they eat.

(Virginianus carolinensis) By Mary Stockard
(Revised 2005) Initial Stabilization Care for Baby Mammals Check for injuries. Seriously injured babies should be taken to a veterinarian that day. Warm the baby quickly if it feels cold. Methods for warming include:
  • Quick method: Place the baby wrapped in a wash cloth inside a plastic Zip-loc bag. DON’T seal the bag. Dip the bag in a bowl of warm (not hot) water. Gently swirl it around for about 5 minutes. This is not recommended for older, active young. Heating pad: Set temperature on low. Place the heating pad half under a closed box the baby has been placed inside of along with ravel-free cloths to snuggle with. Disposable plastic bottle: Use a plastic soft drink bottle or other plastic bottle. Fill it with hot water. Wrap it with a towel or other cloth. Place it inside a box with the baby. Make sure that it will not roll around possibly hurting the baby. Rice sock: Fill a sock 2/3 full of rice. Microwave it on high for 2 to 2 ½ minutes. Place it in the bedding in the box with the baby.

Asian Soybean Rust Purdue Links Opossums vs. Possums? Question: Is there was a difference between an opossum and a possum? I think that opossums are found in North America and possums are only found in Australia. Am I right? Answer: We checked local sources of information such as zoos, textbooks, and field guides, and found only references to Opossums. Recently, I came across a book called Orders and Families of Recent Mammals of the World by Sydney Anderson and J. Knox Jones, Jr. In this book, new world members of the family Didelphidae are refered to as opossums, but the Australasian relatives of our opossums are called possums. What ever you choose to call them, opossums or possums, these animals are interesting members of the group of pouched mammals called marsupials. Judy S. GEOGRAPHIC RANGE
In a very general sense, the Didelphidae can be said to inhabit both New World continents, from southeastern Canada to southern South America, but the common or Virginia opossum is the only marsupial making its home in the continental U.S. and Canada. All other species of Didelphidae range across Mexico, Central, and South America, from northern Mexico to southern Patagonia in South America, and on some of the Lesser Antilles Islands.
    HABITAT
The Virginia opossum inhabits the widest range of habitats of any New World opossum, being found over most of the continental United States and southeastern Canada, in forest, grassland, and desert. The other species variously inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, and a few, like the Patagonian opossum, inhabit temperate grasslands in South America. The dryland mouse opossum prefers desert-like conditions in Central America.
    CONSERVATION STATUS
Out of all the Didelphidae species, the IUCN lists three as Critically Endangered (facing an extremely high risk of extinction), three as Endangered (facing a very high risk of extinction), fifteen as Vulnerable (facing a high risk of extinction), and eighteen as Near Threatened (close to becoming threatened with extinction).

    Living With Opossum
    Opossum Facts
Opossums are among the most primitive mammals. Fossil ancestry goes back 70 Million years. They have survived by adapting to human habitat and being able to eat just about anything. They are beneficial in that they help to keep the balance of nature. Opossums are often mistaken for rats. They are not rodents, they are marsupials. They are not aggressive toward humans or pets but they will attempt to defend themselves if cornered. They are relatively disease free. They do not carry Parvo virus, distemper or rabies. They are actually an excellent animal to have around your property because they eat rats, mice, snails, slugs and insects. They also eat over ripe fruit that has fallen to the ground. They are called "omnivores" because they meat as well as vegetables and fruit. Opossums are nest builders. They are also nocturnal. They spend much of the day in their dens. At night, they forage for food. They are excellent climbers using all their hands, feet and tail to grasp.

The phone rings and just as I finish my greeting, the caller implores me to remove a white rat that is sitting on her fence. "It won't move!", she says. "It just sits there with his rat like tail and his mouth open." Smiling, I informed the caller that the animal is really a frightened opossum who will leave the area when all the commotion dies down. While this story may seem humorous to those familiar with opossums, let me assure you that this type of call is not very rare. The opossum's quiet nature and nocturnal lifestyle ensure it doesn't get the attention of the more familiar raccoon. Opossums are cat sized four legged marsupials with gray hair and a white rat-like tail. They mate twice a year with the females raising an average of 7 young per litter. Young are carried in a pouch until they mature enough to ride on mom's back. Although originally confined to the Southern U.S., opossums have moved North since the Civil War. It is believed that they hitched rides on the burgeoning rail roads. Opossums can now be found as far north as Canada.

    [Collected on the Internet, 1997]
Do opossums hang by their tails in trees? I've heard that they do.
Origins: Opossums are misunderstood creatures, often mistaken for members of the rodent family because of their long rat-like tails. Opossums are actually North America's only marsupial, a class of mammal that carries its newborn in an abdominal pouch. (The North American opossum should not be confused with the Australian possum, which is a related but distinctly different animal.) After the first 60 days, the babies emerge to take their places on Mama's back to be further ferried around for an additional couple of months. Opossums, one might say, carry both motherhood and their offspring to extremes.)
Captain John Smith (of Pocahontas fame) is credited with bestowing the 'opossum' handle on the critter from the Algonquin Indian name 'apasum,' which means 'white face.' Smith described the animal as having "a head like a swine and a tail like a rat," a rather accurate, if unflattering, portrait.
The opossum is at home in trees. It uses its prehensile tail to help stabilize position when climbing, much the same way as a mouse will use its tail to maintain balance when it climbs a wheat stalk to nosh on the grain. Opossums do not hang by their tails, though. A baby opossum might be able to manage this feat for a second or two, but weight and body size in proportion to tail strength rule out the possibility of an adult opossum's pulling it off.

The opossum , or "possum" , is found in the west coast states, the Eastern and Central U.S. and throughout Georgia. It is a whitish gray mammal. Adult males weigh an average of 6 to 12lbs. and females 4 to 6lbs. They reach a maximum length of 3' including their hairless, grasping tail. Opossums are the only marsupials
How, when and why they become a nuisance pest.
Opossums can become a nuisance for greater Atlanta residence any time of the year. They may raid improperly sealed trash cans and pet foods left outdoors. Opossums may seek shelter in attics, crawl spaces, tool sheds, decks and porches. Opossums living in and around homes produce unwanted waste and nocturnal noise. It is not uncommon for baby opossums to die in and around homes producing even more of a problem.
    Damage they cause.
Most damage caused by opossums occur during the winter and early spring. They will destroy soffits , tear off shingles, damage crawl space vents and take off mushroom vent caps just to gain access to your home. Once inside they will destroy insulation and wires to modify the house to their liking. Opossum droppings pose another threat altogether. Their droppings may contain a variety of diseases harmful to pets and humans.
Trash can raiding opossums can be deterred by fastening lids with bungee cords or other straps. Pet food should be stored in metal containers and food bowls should be brought in nightly.
