Oppositional behaviour is often normal part of development for two to three years old children and early adolescents. However, openly uncooperative and hostile behaviour becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child’s social, family and academic life. What are the symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder?

Oppositional Defiant Disorder The Learning Disability of Oppositional Defiant Disorder Common explanations for explosive and noncompliant behavior in children tend to focus on a child’s lack of motivation to behave appropriately and on parental incompetence.  For example, recent letters to the editor in Time magazine in response to an article describing an Ohio school strategy for handling behaviorally challenging kindergarten students (the strategy was to teach kindergarten teachers how to use physical restraint procedures).   The letter writers blamed the parents of the behaviorally-challenging kindergartners. Recent research into the childhood diagnosis ”Oppositional Defiant Disorder" (ODD) found the presence of cognitive skill deficits amongst these children who are behaviorally challenging (Greene et al, 2002a). Such deficits were found most notably in areas of executive functioning skills, emotion regulation skills, language processing skills, and social information processing skills. For example, approximately 55% of children with language processing difficulties also met the diagnostic criteria for ODD, suggesting that, if a child does not possess the linguistic skills necessary to label and categorize emotions or communicate needs to others, the stage may be set for concurrent difficulties with frustration tolerance and problem solving (Greene and Ablon, 2003).

Oppositional Defiant Disorder by: Anthony Kane, MD Introduction Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a psychiatric behavior disorder that is characterized by aggressiveness and a tendency to purposefully bother and irritate others. These behaviors cause significant difficulties with family and friends and at school or work. Oppositional defiant disorder is sometimes a precursor of conduct disorder. Much of the literature tends to lump these two conditions together. However, they seem to be distinct entities and, although conduct disorder does have a genetic component, ODD does not.

Teenagers struggling with this disorder may frequently believe that they have all the right to feel such anger. They may turn to their parents or school authorities and accuse them of being unfair or harsh. This is particularly the way they justify their violent behavior. Set guidelines at home may be ignored as the teenager challenges authority.
The characteristics of Oppositional Defiance Disorder may start to appear from 7-13 years of age. Usually, the home is where your teen may begin to exhibit rebellious behavior. Try not to blame yourself if you become a witness to behavior of this nature. Instead, go on to observe if his defiant behavior will exhibit in school as well.

    Dear Lisa,
I have an 6 and a half year old who has been diagonosed with ODD. I can totally relate to you. She can be as sweet as can be one minute and throwing the biggest tempertantrum the next. I have yet to find anything that works with her. From our initial visits with psychiatrist and psychologist, it is extremely rare for kids to have ODD without having a biological reason for it such as ADHD, anxiety etc. I would recommend seeking help thru a psychiatrist and also doing a full neurological work up to rule out anything physical. We are doing this next week. If you find out anything that works, please let me know. Also there are two books I would recommend: 123 Magic and Your Defiant Child.
GOOD LUCK!!!!! Name: Date: you could be over using the word "no" Name: Date: Name: Date: Name: Date: I have a 6 year old son that acts the same way. We just has the school do some testing because they are seeing it as well and it is affecting his academics. We are implementing an IEP(Individual Educatin Plan) and have signed him up for an anger management class provided by the school. We haven't decided if medication is needed yet but it is nice to know to what extent the problem is these test can help by telling you if it is clinically significant in which case you need help right now aand whether he is high risk which can help by starting to put by gathering the help you feel he needs as well as the school helping you with options other than medication.

    Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Q: Is oppositional defiant disorder comparable to the "spirited" child? My son is definitely a spirited child, and he meets many, if not all, the characteristics of ODD. We are in need of help to learn how to parent this child effectively and to help him be happier. I'm starting to feel desperate. A: Children who are diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are typically more extreme than spirited children. They hardly agree with anyone, argue frequently, and seem to oppose almost any idea presented by parents, teachers, or friends. I refer to them as dominant children who seem happy only when they are in control. They can indeed be difficult, and their behavior may stem from a combination of temperament and overempowerment. It's most important that you and your son's teachers stay united so that he doesn't gain further power by manipulating adults. It's also important to pick your battles and be firm on those. My book
