The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida, was founded in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its primary purpose is to provide a permanent sanctuary in a safe and enriching environment for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of long-term life care … specifically those who have been used in entertainment, kept as pets by private owners, or served as research subjects. The Center began as an effort to offer lifetime care for five young apes born at a private breeding facility before they were sold as pets or entertainers, and so far, has taken in many more apes with circus, entertainment, pet, and research backgrounds. Currently, the Center houses

It includes an 8-character x 2-line liquid crystal display, two bi-directional motor ports, a buzzer, three pushbuttons, and up to 12 user I/O lines, yet the compact module measures only 2.00" x 1.85" and weighs less than 1 ounce. Because of the complete feature set, very few additional components (such as sensors or motors) need to be added to complete the electronic portion of a small robot. The small package allows for greater flexibility in incorporating the electronics into the mechanical design of a robot. Orangutans in the wild are using tools. In 1994, Carel van Schaik of Duke University became the first anthropologist to document the use of tools among wild orangutans. His study investigated orangutans in the swampy Gunung Leuser National Park, in the northwest corner of Sumatra, who were developing implements to help themselves eat. Here, ravines, knee-deep water, and fish leeches keep out loggers , leaving the orangutans relatively undisturbed. The swamp is densely packed with orangutans that van Schaik describes as gregarious and extremely tolerant of each other an unusual arrangement for these apes, who are usually solitary. "The reason that tolerance is important is that we assume that the critical factor for using tools is the ability to learn it from others," van Schaik explains. "Everybody is using tools, and everybody has the chance to observe it, so it is a social behavior." Orangutans in captivity often use tools, but no one before van Schaik had observed this behavior in wild populations. Wild orangutans on the nearby island of Borneo have not developed tool use, perhaps because they are more sparsely distributed throughout the forest.

Orangutans
The Wild Man of Borneo...
Playful, intelligent, and sociable, orang utan is one of the most loved and most threatened of all the large apes. Found only in their natural wild habitat in South East Asia (on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra), they live mostly in the treetops where they build nests. It seems strange that we should find such fascination in these animals - who are genetically so close to humans and share many of our characteristics - yet our activity seems certain to cause their extinction within the next few decades. Deforestation means loss of habitat for these wonderful apes, whose cause for survival has now been taken up by many conservationists and lovers of wildlife worldwide.
Orang Utan Fact Sheet
Family name: Pongidae (the great apes, including gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans)
Order name: Primates (which includes 11 families, which include lemurs, monkeys, marmosets, lesser apes, great apes, and humans)
Common name: Orangutan
Scientific name: Pongo pygmaeus Orang-utans have a large tailless body with a thick neck, very long, strong arms, short, bowed legs which are used much like a second par of arms. Their name has nothing to do with the orange fur covering most of their body: 'Orang' means man and 'Utan' means of the forest. Their similarities to man are many: senses very similar to ours with four fingers and an opposable thumb on each hand. However their feet also have an opposable big toe unlike man (except perhaps in Alabama). Their arm span too is beyond man's being 2.3 m (7.5 feet).

F U N F A C T S
As nighttime approaches in a tropical rain forest in parts of Sumatra and Borneo in Asia, orangutans prepare for sleep. In forks of trees high off the ground, shaggy, red-haired apes bend branches down to form comfortable mattresses of leaves and twigs. They sometimes add a roof built from more branches, so that if it rains they will stay dry.
Equipped with very long, powerful arms and hook-shaped hands and feet, these apes climb and swing from tree to tree with ease. They reach from one tree to the next with their long arms, grasping the next branch with long hands or feet, and swing their bodies across the gap. If a baby following its mother reaches a gap between trees that is too wide for it to navigate, its mother makes a living bridge for the baby to scamper across.

Welcome to Orangutan-lib
Orangutan-lib is a C library for the Orangutan family of robot controllers from Pololu Robotics . Distribution of Orangutan-lib is provided for by Sourceforge.net . It is very much a work in progress, but releases are posted frequently, and we take suggestions for new features on the Pololu Robotics Forums . Plans are also afoot to port the library to the AVR Butterfly, as time allows. The purpose of Orangutan-lib is to provide enough functionality to get someone up and running, to do this using (mostly) easy to read code with lots of comments, and to arrange things so there are as few cross-dependencies as possible, making it easy to take only those features you want and incorporate them into your own code. To put this in terms of robotics, expect Orangutan-lib to give you enough functionality to build a mini-sumo robot or a line follower. To program a robo-magellan platform, you'll need to add a lot of your own code. Orangutan-lib was written under AVR Studio 4 and WinAVR . It should work under other development environments, but the Makefiles are all generated by AVR Studio 4, so expect to have to tweak them. The 0.3 release will include a script for converting all the AVR Studio 4 Makefiles to gcc makefiles. It

Orangutan Plan To Curb Carbon Emissions
ScienceDaily (Jan. 2, 2008) See also: "In the last 35 years about 50,000 orangutans are estimated to have been lost as their habitats shrank. If this continues, this majestic creature will likely face extinction by 2050," said Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the launch of the plan. "The fate of the orangutan is a subject that goes to the heart of sustainable forests ... To save the orangutan we have to save the forest." As part of the orangutan conservation plan developed by the forestry ministry and NGOs, Indonesia will aim to stabilise orangutan populations and habitat from now until 2017 and return orangutans housed in rehabilitation centres to the wild by 2015. The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry led the finalization for this blue print for orangutan conservation and involved key players and a range of experts at both the national and international level. WWF has been actively involved in developing the plan and is part of the small team that finalized the document. Orangutan
Genus: Pongo
Species:
pygmaeus The name Orangutan means "man of the forest" in Malay. The Orangutan is the largest of the tree dwelling apes of Southeast Asia. Orangutans can grow up to five feet tall, but males are usually 4 feet tall and females are 3 feet. They have an arm span of 8 feet when full grown. The adult male orangutan can weigh up to 220 lbs. and an adult female can weigh up to 110 lbs. They are heavily built and their arms arevery long and lanky, but their legs are short and weak. Orangutans have long, thin reddish brown hair. They have a high and sloping forehead and a rounded snout. Males have cheek pads made up of fat which keep on growing as they get older. The big toe on each foot can rotate and touch the ends of the other toes, like our hands. So Orangutans have four "hands". When on the ground, Orangutans walk on all four limbs. Their knees are bent inward and their arms are placed either flat or clenched on the ground. Their calls are whining and squeaking sounds. The adult male makes a long roar- like call. Orangutans are duirnal and feed during the day. At night they build a platform style nest out of branches about 40 to 50 feet above the ground.

Evidence
Literature Origin Points of View Humans more features uniquely shared with orangutans than with any other living ape. Schwartz (1984) proposed that humans are more closely related to orangutans than to chimpanzees - a model that contradicts the greater genetic similarity of base pair sequences in humans and chimpanzees. The orangutan model presents a conundrum for biological systematics over how to chose between morphological and genetic evidence when they are in conflict. Base pair sequences simiarlity may not always accurately predict phylogenetic relationship and morphology may represent an independently reliable source of information on evolutionary relationships.
