edit History
Prior to 1828, it was believed that the molecules necessary for life were very different from the molecules of inanimate objects. Chemicals from non-living things were considered inorganic, and those from living organisms were organic. It was believed that the dichotomy between organic and inorganic compounds was maintained by a "vital force", and although organic compounds could be converted to inorganic ones, inorganic compounds could not be converted to organic ones. In 1828, however, Friedrich W¶hler synthesized urea (an "organic" molecule) from "inorganic" ammonium cyanate. This proved that the belief in a vital force was unfounded, and that the chemicals found in living creatures can be made from materials obtained from non-living sources. Since then, many complex molecules found in living organisms ("natural products") have been synthesized from non-living starting materials.
edit Modern definition
In modern times, the labels of "organic" and "inorganic" chemistry are used to designate two disciplines within the realm of chemistry. "Organic chemistry" often refers to the branch of chemistry which looks at molecules that contain

Organic chemistry
Organic chemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with the study of carbon -containing molecules known as organic compounds (except carbon dioxide and monoxide ). Although there is an overlap with biochemistry , the latter is the specific study of the molecules made by living organisms. Some of the classes of substances studied in organic chemistry include: aliphatic compounds which deals with chains of carbon which can be modified by functional groups aromatic compounds which are compounds having a benzene ring or similar group; heterocyclic compounds , compounds which include non-carbon atoms as part of a ring structure; physiologically active compounds[?] which have an effect on the human body; and polymers - long chains of repeating groups. Carbon is the only element that can make bonds with itself so that chains are produced, silicon has similar properties, but Carbon is a main element in everyday life, and thus, is lucky enough to have a whole subject in chemistry dedicated to it.

The Chemical Basis of Life Home Water Quiz Self Evaluation State and District Standards Water is the most unusual compound, with properties found in no other material. Water is one of the few naturally occurring compounds that is liquid at the temperatures found on much of the Earth's surface. Water is one of a few compounds that expands as it makes the phase change from a liquid to a solid which is why ice floats. Water covers more than 75% of the Earth's surface and is the most abundant compound in nearly all living organisms. Water is unique in that its molecular mass is less than that of many gases, it is a liquid at room temperature, and it becomes less dense in its solid form. Properties of Water The most important property of water is that, due to an uneven distribution of electrons, it is slightly charged at each end. This polarity produces a strong attraction between individual water molecules and between water molecules and other charged molecules. It is this polarity that explains why water will dissolve so many substances and is often referred to as the universal solvent. The second unusual property of water is its high heat capacity. That means it can absorb a lot of heat before it increases in temperature or that it can give off a lot heat before it starts to cool.

I think we should write to MCAT and tell them this question is messed up (I know they dont give a shi@)... maybe there was something in the passage that gave away the answer.... Anyway I know let it rest... RT 04-24-2002, 08:08 AM RogerRabbit, they stated "aqueous CrO3" ie. excess CrO3 I assumed. PlayaHata 04-24-2002, 08:35 AM I dont think it was aqueous. 04-24-2002, 09:18 AM Although CrO3 is considered a weak oxidizer, many organic profs agreed that it would oxidize a primary alcohol to a ald and again to Carb. Acid. Most of the time if you want just aldehyde ox. You also add PCC, which limits amount of O2 available in reaction mix. 04-24-2002, 11:40 AM I believe the solvent was CH2Cl2 and not aqueuous. does that change the answer?

This is a draft article , under development. These unapproved articles are subject to edit intro Organic chemistry is a specific discipline within the subject of chemistry . It is the scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions , and preparation (by synthesis or by other means) of chemical compounds of carbon and hydrogen , which may contain any number of other elements, such as nitrogen oxygen halogens , and more rarely phosphorus or sulfur The original definition of organic chemistry came from the misperception that these compounds were always related to life processes, but now it is known that life also depends heavily on inorganic chemistry ; for example, many enzymes rely on transition metals such as iron and copper; and materials such as shells, teeth and bones are part organic, part inorganic in composition. Inorganic chemistry deals, apart from elemental carbon, only with simple carbon compounds, with molecular structures which do not contain carbon to carbon connections (its oxides, acids, salts, carbides, and minerals). This does not mean that single-carbon organic compounds do not exist (viz. methane and its simple derivatives). Compounds that are related to life processes are dealt with in the branch of chemistry which is called

Organic Chemistry is the historical name for the chemistry of carbon chemicals or compounds. It was thought that chemicals came from either living (organic) matter or from minerals (inorganic) matter. Organic matter is mainly carbon and therefore the chemistry of the carbon compounds was called Organic Chemistry.
Recently, modern Organic Chemistry has been covering broader areas than in the past, and includes chemistry of almost all elements centering on the carbon atom.
