Organic horticulture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Organic gardening Jump to: navigation search Organic horticulture is the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants by following the essential principles of organic agriculture in soil building and conservation, pest management, and heritage-species preservation. The Latin words hortus (garden plant) and cultura (culture) together form horticulture , classically defined as the culture or growing of garden plants. Horticulture is also sometimes defined simply as “agriculture minus the plough (or plow).” Instead of the plough , horticulture makes use of human labour and gardener’s cultivation tools, or of small machine tools like rotary tillers

Mulches cover crops compost manures , and ground-rock mineral supplements are soil-building mainstays. Through care and good soil condition, it is hoped that insect, fungal,or other problems that sometimes plague plants can be avoided. However, pheromone traps insecticidal soap sprays, and other pest-control methods available to organic farmers are also sometimes utilized by organic horticulturists.

For every animal species that becomes extinct, and usually not without some fanfare, hundreds of plant species disappear! They are simply bred out of existence as "Big Agriculture" plants for profit ONLY. If a tomato variety can be bred to stay firm on a store shelf for an extra week, that will be the variety grown. THAT is why vegetables don't taste as you remember!! Fortunately, some organic farmers still "save seeds" and produce "heirloom varieties", varieties that have been the same for years, many of which are becoming scarce, and that DO taste as you remember. Try planting some of these...and be sure to save some seeds for next year!

Organic Gardening for Wildlife
Kay Mills introduces us to the great advantages of an organic approach to even the humblest back garden.
Creating a healthy organic garden by working in harmony with nature, rather than using chemical sprays and fertilisers, can be one of the most satisfying and productive uses of your garden. Far from the stereotype of old tyres, carpets and black plastic, an organic garden can be a beautiful space, brimming with colour and perfume for much of the year. The organic method of gardening uses a huge diversity of plants to limit the amount of damage pests can cause, and to attract beneficial wildlife to the garden, ensuring a sustainable natural balance is achieved. There are many useful books available on all aspects of organic gardening, from companion planting to growing your own food, but whatever the level of time, effort and resources you can put into your garden there are a few basic principles to follow:
Work with nature, not against it.
Make sure the plants you grow are suitable to your soil type and climate of your garden. The use of native plants will also increase the diversity of insects and birds visiting your garden.

O rganic G ardening F rom D own U nder Organic Garden Synthetics Book Suggestions Artificial Fertilisers ... Magazines In an Organic Garden there are no Chemical Pesticides, Fungicides, Herbicides or Artificial Fertilisers. Absolutely no Chemicals are to be used in your garden. If you do, it is not "ORGANIC". It is very difficult to achieve a 100% organic garden in the 1990s. But by not using Chemicals it is a 100% better for the environment, and therefore yourself and your families will be much healthier. If you use any Chemicals or Synthetics on or around your garden or fruit trees, not only are they toxic they are also expensive, therefore you are wasting your time and money. It would be cheaper and less work for yourself to buy off the shelf. Why you should not use Artificial Fertilisers. Many artificially produced fertilisers contain the three elements - Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium and little else. Plants that are fed on only artificial fertilizer grow well, look good, but have very little taste. These plants will produce more nitrites and less vitamin C. Nitrites are known to be carcinogenic to humans and animals. Vitamin C neutralises nitrites in the human body. Farmers that only grow the same crop over and over, all year round, such as tomatoes, have depleted the soil through lack of crop rotation, eroded the top soil and lost organic matter. They are committed to use artificial fertilisers and chemical sprays. Their environment is dead, 100% artificial. (in the USA tomatoes are up to 70% deficient in vitamin C.

From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection
A Wikimanual of Gardening Jump to: navigation search Organic Gardening (also called Organic Horticulture ) is a growing practice among gardeners around the world, as an alternative to gardening through the use of synthetic chemicals. This wikibook contains techniques and tips for gardeners wishing to use organic methods. While the movement behind organic gardening began as a "back to basics" movement, over the past several decades the practice has become enriched by scientific research in the fields of ecology, ethnobotany, microbiology, and agronomy. The practice of organic gardening can be described as "gardening with a limited toolbox", since organic gardeners do not use synthetic fertilisers or other synthetic chemicals. Non-synthetic fertilisers and chemicals can be used, however, depending on the gardeners preference. A Wikimanual of Gardening does not (at least presently) have separate pages for organic gardeners, but rather points out the "organic remedies" when a particular issue is discussed. Outline:

Organic soil
A healthy soil, rich in nutrients and life, is the essential building block of any garden. Soil is a complex and delicate ecosystem in its own right with a multitude of organisms converting a wide variety of inactive materials into the essential nutrients that your plants will thrive on. Chemical fertilisers can destroy these organisms and pull you and your garden into a cycle of dependency. A fundamental principle of organic gardening is to feed your soil and then let the soil feed your plants. By providing the materials that the natural fauna and flora in your soil need to thrive, you will encourage more and more of these hard working little organisms to grow and multiply. The result, an ever increasing quality of soil with more and more available nutrients. As your soil develops the effects spread further up the larger ecosystem. Good soil promotes a healthy populations of worms and worms attract larger garden visitors. It's not long before even the smallest garden starts to see signs of hedgehogs, toads and other more substantial beasties. Their presence further adds to the quality of your soil. You'd be amazed just how much nutrient comes out of the feathery posteriors of the typical family of birds.
