    The NBA's most celebrated supporting cast (if that's not a contradiction in adjectives) belonged to Michael Jordan in Chicago. 1. The European Basis The general framework of the Project was established by the "European Action Plan to Combat Organized Crime", approved by the EU in 1997, which provided for numerous initiatives in this field. The Joint European Project first of all checked whether the Italian, German and Spanish legal systems satisfy the provisions of the Action Plan and comply with the further developments of the European commitment in the field. At the same time the possibilities were analysed of concretising the goal upon which these European documents are based: the harmonization of the criminal systems of the Member States. On this basis, the Project drafted several rules at the European level, focusing on some significant sectors already indicated in the above mentioned Action Plan.

The Government of Ontario is committed to fighting organized crime. Ontario’s police services and law enforcement agencies are supported and encouraged to work together to build partnerships at the local, regional, national and international levels. Ontario has made a significant investment in the fight against organized crime:
  • $3.5 million annually (since 1995) for Joint Force Operations; $4 million annually (since 2000) for strategic policing and legal resources focusing on organized crime (funding split between Ministries of Public Safety and Security and the Attorney General); funding for Ontario’s Outlaw Biker Enforcement Unit (BEU) has more than doubled from $2.7 million to $5.7 million annually starting this fiscal year 2002/2003;

Assistants assigned to this section are responsible for the investigation and prosecution of complex federal cases using conspiracy, continuing criminal enterprise and RICO statutes in order to target and disable the most significant violent gangs and major narcotics traffickers in the District of Columbia. The mission of this section is to stem the flow of narcotics and other dangerous drugs into the District of Columbia by eliminating the drug distribution networks at their sources. Junior assistants in rotational assignments in the section prosecute arrest-generated narcotics and firearms offenses that give rise to mandatory penalties under the provisions of the United States Code. These cases generally arise from undercover operations, the execution of search warrants, or the interdiction of drug couriers at public transportation terminals.
The Asset Forfeiture Unit, housed within the Organized Crime and Narcotics Trafficking Section, works with other Assistants throughout the Criminal Division to seize proceeds derived from illegal sources, such as white collar fraud schemes, drug trafficking and the assets of drug dealers who have facilitated narcotics offenses. Since its inception in February 1989, the Unit has seized and caused the forfeiture of several million dollars worth of personal property and real estate involved in or derived from criminal activity. In addition, it works with other Divisions within the Office on nuisance and drug abatement matters in the City.

    Organized Crime
    " When you think of organized crime, you probably picture the Italian and Sicilian Mafioso of television and the silver screen. But in recent years, the face of organized crime has changed, and the threat is broader and more complex than ever. Today, organized crime includes:
    * Russian mobsters who fled to the U.S. in the wake of the Soviet Union’s collapse;
    * Groups from African countries like Nigeria that engage in drug trafficking and financial scams;
    * Chinese tongs, Japanese Boryokudan, and other Asian crime rings; and
    * Enterprises based in Eastern European nations like Hungary and Romania. All of these groups have a presence in the U.S. or are targeting our citizens from afar—using the Internet and other technologies of our global age. More and more, they are literally becoming partners in crime, realizing they have more to gain from cooperating than competing.'' From the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Organized Crime home page.

Police Arrest top Mafia Dons in Sicily Raid
From latimes.com: Police raided a summit of Mafia dons in Sicily on Monday, arresting a longtime fugitive authorities say was revitalizing Cosa Nostra's ties with U.S. mobsters and vying to become the crime syndicate's next "boss of bosses." The capture of Salvatore Lo Piccolo after more than a decade on the run dealt another blow to the Sicilian Mafia, already weakened by several recent arrests, outmuscled by other underworld groups and facing an unprecedented challenge to the extortion racket that has been one of its main sources of income.

Calin Mateias, a Romanian computer hacker, was indicted in August 2004 for hacking into Ingram Micro's online ordering system and fraudulently ordering more than $10 million in computer equipment from the Santa Ana, Calif., company, the largest technology distributor in the world. Ingram Micro was only able to intercept less than half the orders before the items were shipped. The phish that didn't get away
In March, Rio de Janeiro police nabbed Valdir Paulo de Almeida, the leader of an 18-member phishing group that spammed a Trojan horse to approximately 3 million email accounts on a daily basis. The Trojan included a keystroke logger that recorded account usernames and passwords, and then fed them back to the gang. The gang stole as much as $37 million from online bank accounts causing serious monetary losses for the financial institutions involved. Although the gang targeted Brazilians, it also siphoned funds from bank accounts abroad, Brazilian federal police told Reuters.
