The earliest method of acupuncture was

coast of China where the inhabitants
lived on fishery. They invented a flat

was used to push aching parts of the

instruments were found from animal
bones, bamboo, and clay. During
the period around 21 B.C., copper
needles were used, then they turned to metal needles between 770-221 B.C. During the time period between 100,000-4,000 B.C. in the northern part of China , with extreme cold weather, moxibustion originated. Inhabitants subsisted on animal husbandry and on milk, causing them to suffer easily from abdominal pain and distention by cold, suitable to be treated by heat. Until 3,000 B.C.,moxibustion was simply performed by warming a branch of a tree, then putting it on the skin. However, keen observers found that the leaf of mugwort, called deeper than any material. This form of moxibustion is still used today. How was this simple method developed into such a complicated network of medicine that survived through thousands of years? The

Successfully Treating Allergies With Oriental Medicine
By Steven Sonmore, L.Ac. More Articles
Articles on Family Health Care and More!
Perhaps you know the feeling, red, itching eyes, a runny nose, and sinus pressure. You're sneezing, tired and really out of it. Sound familiar? That's how I felt when seasonal allergies first hit me hard as a teenager. I was miserable and incapacitated. I eventually found out though, that I didn't have to endure the misery. I discovered Oriental medicine which has successfully treated seasonal allergies for thousands of years by treating the root cause of illness not just the symptoms. The Oriental View Of Allergies So what is the root cause of seasonal allergies? According to Oriental medicine, these allergies are due to repeated invasion of the lungs by wind and cold. Normally, the weather will not have any harmful effect on your body when it is strong enough to defend itself. The wind only becomes a cause of allergies when either your body is weak in relation to the weather or the weather is unseasonably excessive (too windy in the spring). In modern medicine we speak of the immune system protecting the body. In Oriental medicine we have the concept of the Wei-Qi or Defensive Qi that circulates on the skin and muscles to protect us from invasion of wind and cold. It is only when this precious protection becomes compromised that we are vulnerable to the elements of nature. Our Defensive Qi can be weakened due to lack of sleep, high stress, negative emotional states, poor diet or a combination there of.

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine are two branches of traditional Oriental Medicine, a time-tested and complete medical system that has been in use for over 2,000 years to effectively diagnose, treat, and prevent illness. It can increase our body's innate self-healing energy and enhance immunity, balance the emotions, and relieve ailments. What Can Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Treat? Before the introduction of western allopathic medicine into China, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine were used exclusively and effectively to treat the gamut of human disease in China. The World Health Organization and National Institutes of Health both recognize that Acupuncture can potentially treat many different ailments. Oriental Medicine is used to effectively treat a wide range of ailments including but not limited to the following:
  • Pain syndromes (back, neck, headache, etc.)
  • Stress, anxiety, and other emotional disorders
  • Women's health issues (PMS, irregular menstruation, etc.)
  • Allergies
  • Hepatitis A, B, and C

What is acupuncture and oriental medicine?
Acupuncture Explained An excerpt of: Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services "Mind/Body Medicine"
Oriental Medicine
It encompasses a variety of health care therapies and is, in fact, a way of looking at medicine that integrates all therapies in its understanding. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology are the most popular in the United States. Other aspects include: Diet, Nutrition, Lifestyle choices, Tai Qi (martial arts/ physical exercise), Tui na (pushing/grasping) which is a manual technique for the treatment of the muscles and joints, Zheng Gu (correct bone) which is a joint mobilization technique, Cupping (gently drawing the skin into cups with suction), Gua Sha (stimulation of the skin by a round-edged instrument), and Feng Shui (environmental balance).

http://www.drnegri.com/html/oriental_medicine.html
In 1971, newspaperman James Reston accompanied President Nixon to China where he experienced firsthand a type of medicine unknown in the United States. Reston received acupuncture treatment, and the entire Nixon delegation was so impressed with what they observed it caused a minor sensation when they returned. There were two things that people of the U.S. did not realize: One was that, spectacular as it is, acupuncture is only a part of Oriental Medicine. The second was that acupuncture has been used in Europe for more than one hundred years and is taught in most major medical schools there. What Americans thought of as a uniquely Asian method is actually international in its use. ORIENTAL MEDICINE - MORE THAN ACUPUNCTURE In traditional Oriental Medicine, there are two groups of methods used: the inner and the outer. Inner methods include oral medicines (which consist of herbs, minerals, organic extracts, etc.), dietary regulation, detoxification, mental exercises, and contemplation. The outer methods include point stimulation (whether by pressure, needles, or non-needle stimulation), massage and joint mobilizations, muscular re-education, therapeutic exercises, moxibustion (a type of herbal heat treatment applied to the acupuncture points), and the application of heat, cold, or medicinal substances to the skin. Because of its exposure in the various news media, however, acupuncture is seen to be synonymous with Oriental Medicine; so much so, in fact, that the many states which license or certify Doctors of Oriental Medicine register them as Acupuncturists. This is similar to Doctors of Chiropractic being listed as Chiropractors. There are currently more than 10,000 licensed practitioners of Oriental Medicine in the United States, and more than two dozen colleges training an increasing number of new doctors every year. The demand for safe, effective, natural healthy care has resulted in more than thirty states recognizing Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

For at least 2,000 years, Chinese medicine has been used to restore heal th. In the traditional Chinese philosophy, the universe (which includes our bodies) is governed by two forces, yin and yang. The relationship of yin and yang creates an energy, called Qi (pronounced "chee"). An imbalance of Qi can lead to health problems, including pain, headaches, and internal disorders. Our practitioners work to restore the balance of Qi by using acupuncture, acupressure and herbs, and by offering dietary and exercise advice. Last modified: October 08, 2002

What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion or Moxa for short is an ancient form of heat therapy. Moxa uses the ground up leaves of the plant Mugwort (Artemesia Vulgaris). The powdery substance is either rolled into sticks for indirect moxa, or made into tiny cones and burned on ointment, ginger or other mediums for direct moxa. It has the function of warming the point and meridians, expelling cold, and promoting the smooth flow of Qi and blood. Moxibustion is good for ailments such as pain conditions, gastrointestinal and gynecological disorders.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the modalities of Oriental Medicine. Fine needles are inserted into the body at specific points that have shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health conditions. In the past three decades, electromagnetic research has confirmed the existence and location of these points. Acupuncture stimulates your body's natural healing processes.  TCM practitioners believe that acupuncture activates the flow of energy forces that nourish tissues, stimulate blood flow and enhance the body's systems.
