I’m a College Student: How Could I Possibly Find Time to Pray
      by Albert S. Rossi, Ph.D.
During an Orthodox College Fellowship retreat last spring, a college student said, "If I put Christ first, the suffering will be great and the joy will be greater."
Isn't this an accurate statement about college students, time, and personal prayer? The schedule of a college student is so full of obligations and activities; prayer may seem like a "to do" item that is so intangible, it does not even qualify for the "to do" list. Can it be true that prayer is the one activity in my day that affects everything else?

Welcome...
Welcome to the website of the Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church for the Eastern United States. His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim has been the Archbishop and Patriarchal Vicar of the archdiocese since 1996 and oversees 20 parishes in the Eastern US, many of them established since his installation. This Church enjoys the greatest prestige in the history of Christendom. The Archdiocese and it's parishioners still use Syriac-Aramaic the language spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ. It suffered untold hardships and tragedies including massacres and repeated transfer of the See of the Patriarchate from one locality to another due to political and other developments until it was settled in Damascus-Syria. This Archdiocese is passionately committed to helping the youth of the church, organizing youth ministries to assist the young faithful, and is instrumental in the Archdiocesan youth scholarship program. On this website you'll find excellent resources. Enjoy your stay!

Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is a treasury which houses and guards many artifacts and monuments of religious, national and artistic value. It is also a ‘workshop’ where religious arts and crafts are still practiced to this day, and where deep and genuine spirituality is allowed to flourish and bear fruit. As an institution Mount Athos is, and has been, the chief standard bearer of Orthodox Christianity.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION IN ETHIOPIA
Ethiopia was well known to the ancient writers. It is mentioned in the Bible more than 38 times by both Old Testament and New Testament writers. So, in accordance with the Biblical traditions of the ancient Israel, Ethiopia is described as the land of "CUSH" which was located by the "RIVER NILE" (Gen. 2: 13) . The Septuagint (The Greek Translation) also describes it after the name of "ETHIOPIA" which has the same location. Apart from the Biblical traditions, many historians knew Ethiopia and described its geographical location, referring towards the south of Egypt, which was populated by both Hamitic and Semitic stocks of people. According to the ancient Egyptian tradition, it was known as the "LAND OF PUNT" located at the end of the World, and they said "Land of Ghost. " Homer (Greek poet of the 8th century B.C.) knew of this historical land and its people, when he said "ETHIOPIA, THE LAND OF SUN BURNED FACE." He described inhabitants again, as "THE BLAMELESS RACE."

Orthodox Stance
For the last 60 years, the term "Jewish boxer" has been an oxymoron. But Dmitriy Salita, a 25 year-old Russian immigrant is making history as a top professional boxer and a rigorously observant Jew. While providing an intimate, 3-year long look at the trials and tribulations faced by an up and coming professional boxer, ORTHODOX STANCE is a portrait of seemingly incompatible cultures and characters working together to support Dmitriy's rare and remarkable devotion to both Orthodox Judaism and the pursuit of a professional boxing title. In the end, the film is about more than just boxing and religion, but a young man's search for meaning in life.

Orthodox Church
The technical name for the body of Christians who use the Byzantine Rite in various languages and are in union with the Patriarch of Constantinople but in schism with the Pope of Rome . The epithet Orthodox orthodoxos ), meaning "right believer ", is, naturally , claimed by people of every religion . It is almost exactly a Greek form of the official title of the chief enemies of the Greeks , i.e. the Moslems (mu'min, fidelis ). The Monophysite Armenians called themselves ughapar , meaning exactly the same thing. How "Orthodox" became the proper name of the Eastern Church it is difficult to say. It was used at first, long before the schism of Photius , especially in the East, not with any idea of opposition against the West , but rather as the antithesis to the Eastern heretics Nestorians and Monophysites Gradually , although of course, both East and West always claimed both names, "Catholic" became the most common name for the original Church in the West , "Orthodox" in the East It would be very difficult to find the right name for this Church . "Eastern" is too vague, the
