In most countries osteopathy is a form of complementary medicine , emphasizing a holistic approach and the skilled use of a range of manual and physical treatment interventions ( osteopathic manipulative medicine , or OMM in the United States) in the prevention and treatment of disease. In practice, this most commonly relates to musculoskeletal problems such as back and neck pain. Many osteopaths see their role as facilitating the body's own recuperative powers by treating musculoskeletal or somatic dysfunction. According to the

    About Osteopathy
Osteopathy (including Cranial Osteopathy) takes advantage of the body's natural tendency to strive toward a state of health and homeostasis. A much in demand specialty, the Osteopath is trained to palpate (feel) the body's "living anatomy" (i.e. flow of fluids, motion and texture of tissues, and structural makeup). They address health problems with a non-invasive system of medicine called, "Osteopathic Manual Medicine" in order to restore normal function in areas impaired by trauma, chronic illness, acute health problems, etc. This Site offers an explanation of traditional Osteopathic medicine in the treatment of a myriad of health problems, cases of typical medical problems resolved through treatment, the history of this medical specialty, and insights in research in Cranial Osteopathy.
Osteopathy is the knowledge of the structure, relation and function of each part of the human body applied to the adjustment or correction of whatever interferes with the harmonious operation of the same.
    George V. Webster, D.O. 1921

    Dubious Aspects of Osteopathy
    Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Osteopathic physicians (DOs) are the legal equivalents and, in most cases, are the professional equivalents of medical doctors. Although most DOs offer competent care, the percentage involved in dubious practices appears to be higher than that of medical doctors. For this reason, before deciding whether to use the services of a DO it is useful to understand osteopathy's history and the practical significance of its philosophy. Cultist Roots Andrew Taylor Still, MD (1828-1917) originally expressed the principles of osteopathy in 1874, when medical science was in its infancy. A medical doctor, Still believed that diseases were caused by mechanical interference with nerve and blood supply and were curable by manipulation of "deranged, displaced bones, nerves, muscles—removing all obstructions—thereby setting the machinery of life moving." His autobiography states that he could "shake a child and stop scarlet fever, croup, diphtheria, and cure whooping cough in three days by a wring of its neck." [1] Still was antagonistic toward the drug practices of his day and regarded surgery as a last resort. Rejected as a cultist by organized medicine, he founded the first osteopathic medical school in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892.

Like an M.D., an osteopathic physician completes 4 years of medical school and can choose to practice in any specialty of medicine. However, osteopathic physicians receive an additional 300 to 500 hours in the study of hands-on manual medicine and the body's musculoskeletal system. Osteopathic medicine is dedicated to treating and healing the entire patient as a whole, rather than focusing on one system or body part. An osteopathic physician will often use a treatment method called manipulation a hands-on approach to assure that the body is moving freely. This free motion ensures that all of your body's natural healing systems are free to work unhindered. Oosteopathic physicians hold to the principle that a patient's history of illness and physical trauma are written into the body's structure. The osteopathic physician's highly developed sense of touch allows the physician to palpate (feel) the patient's "living anatomy" (the flow of fluids, motion and texture of tissues, and structural make-up).

Discovering Osteopathy Osteopathy is a distinctive and complete system of health care, based on broad principles that “offer a way of thinking and acting in relation to questions of health and disease” (Dr. I. M. Korr). The procedures it uses in diagnosis and treatment promote healthy functioning in a person by correcting mechanical imbalances within and between the structures of the body. By structures we mean the muscles, bones, ligaments, organs, and fascia. The fascia is a very thin layer of tissue that is found under the skin. Correcting the mechanical imbalances in the structures is done by restoring, maintaining, and improving the harmonious working of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. The name osteopathy (given to the therapy by Dr. Still) comes from the Greek

    osteopathy
Osteopathy is a medical practice based on the theory that diseases are due chiefly to loss of structural integrity which can be restored to harmony or equilibrium by manipulation. The manipulation allegedly allows the body to heal itself. Osteopaths use manipulation for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917), a Civil War surgeon in the Union army, is credited with discovering os teopathy as an alternative to the medical practices common in his day, practices which failed to save his three children from spinal meningitis. Still became convinced that he could cure diseases by shaking the body or manipulating the spine. In his autobiography, he says he could "shake a child and stop scarlet fever, croup, diphtheria, and cure whooping cough in three days by a wring of its neck" (Barrett) . He also advocated clean living, including abstinence from alcohol and medically prescribed drugs. Surgery was to be avoided, if possible. Today, D.O.s (doctors of osteopathy) complement manipulation with standard medical methods of diagnosis and treatment, including recommending drug therapy and surgery if appropriate. D.O.s have four years of medical training at a college of osteopathic medicine and do a one-year internship in primary care. Some continue their education in an area of osteopathic specialization. Nevertheless, there has not been scientific validation of Still's theory of shaking and manipulating to remove obstructions.

Osteopathy is a form of drug-free non-invasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. Its aim is to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.
This therapy is a unique holistic (whole body) approach to health care. Osteopaths do not simply concentrate on treating the problem area, but use manual techniques to balance all the systems of the body, to provide overall good health and wellbeing.
Dr. Andrew Taylor Still established the practice of Osteopathy in the late 1800s in the United States of America, with the aim of using manual 'hands on' techniques to improve circulation and correct altered biomechanics, without the use of drugs.

Cranial Bones: Sphenoid with Ethmoid OSTEOPATHY (ah-stee-AH-pah-thee) is a system of "manual medicine." A gentle manipulative technique, based upon sound physiologic principles, is used to evaluate and treat tissue dysfunction. Palpation (touch) reveals inherent flexibilities and restrictions. The imprinted history of various traumas, illnesses, and surgeries may be readily perceived. Through a very special understanding of anatomy, and a unique touch, vitality is restored to dysfunctional tissues. OSTEOPATHIC MANIPULATIVE TREATMENT uses very gentle pressures and positionings to encourage the tissues to gently relax and unwind, releasing the shock of imprinted traumas. Patients often experience a sense of deep relaxation, tingling, fluid flows and relief of pain. Emotional releases may occur as well. These changes may be experienced immediately as they occur or later after the treatment. Some patients will only notice that their previous level of pain has diminished some hours or days following the treatment. OSTEOPATHIC PHYSICIANS are fully trained and licensed physicians, capable of practicing the entire range and scope of medicine, obstetrics and surgery. In addition to conventional medical practice, the hands are used to palpate (feel) tissue function and dysfunction. Gentle manipulative techniques are applied, restoring optimal function (freedom).

So many options and so much confusion. Fads, trends and excited storytellers. How do you choose? By feel or by information? From a sense of peace or some hurried urgency? Knowledge satisfies our sensibilities, what we can mentally grab on to. Peace, in our actions, gives us a reliable "feel" of what is best, and sustains our spirit. In choosing a healer, let peace be your guide, and knowledge your compass. If one were to search for the best and mightiest healer, what attributes might she seek? A physician, with the knowledge to differentiate life-threatening conditions from healthy ones? A physician, who has inherited over one hundred years of skills, honed and handed down from one generation of healers to the next? A physician, who is licensed in western medicine but who maintains that nature's laws direct healing? This physician should not give drugs or suggest surgery as his first course. He should, instead, seek to remove those restrictions that have delayed our healing and he should seek to promote that inner potency responsible for it. Such a physician would possess the tools for issuing the highest cure, the best result. Such a physician is the Cranial Osteopath.

William Garner Sutherland ' Osteopath ' developed this practice of Cranial Osteopathy in the 1930's. A drug free hands on technique of gentle manipulation of the skull , practitioners of this therapy relieves tension and pain, bringing the bodies balance back into harmony. Practitioners of this alternative therapy believe that gentle manipulation of the skull can relieve pain and tension, bringing the body back in balance. A non-obtrusive environment of which the body heals itself and relaxes, cranio-sacral balancing as a result of fusion of two separate discoveries. Early this century, William G. Sutherland, was very impressed by the fact bones of the skull were naturally designed to move in relation to each other. Practitioners worldwide are trained by the Upledger Institute. Generally consider safe , but not all therapists have a background in physiology , anatomy and osteopathy.

First of all, I would like to talk about Osteopathy in general. I would like to enlighten you about the differences between the way in which a medically trained physician thinks and the way an osteopathically trained physician thinks about a problem.
When your child was born it was, first of all, evaluated by the pediatrician. He was looking to make sure there was no congenital defect, either externally visible or invisible, such as perhaps in his lungs or the heart or the digestive tract, and also to make sure that all the systems were functioning efficiently.
As osteopathic physicians we are looking at something more when your baby is born, because we recognize that the process of being born is probably the most traumatic experience that most people ever have.
