Vital Motions and Material Forms
We know life only by the motions of material bodies.
A. T. Still Motion is not life. Motion is a manifestation of life.
Rollin Becker, DO If it moves, it can take care of itself.
Stan Schiowitz, DO Within the field of Osteopathy, the concept of motion and disorders caused by the lack of motion form the basis of many core principles of Osteopathy and provide a foundation for diagnosis and treatment. As Osteopaths, we place great value on identifying the presence, diminution, or absence of perceived motion. We utilize the presence or absence of motion in making a diagnosis. At the same time we respect that motion is a expression of life and is intimately involved with the self-healing and self-correcting mechanisms of homeodynamics. The detection of an integrated expression of motion is one of the Osteopathic perceptions of holism. Dr. Still taught that, ". . . motion is the first and only evidence of life . . ."

      Overview
What is osteopathy? Osteopathy is based on the belief that most diseases are related to problems in the musculoskeletal system and that structure and function of the body are inseparable. The musculoskeletal system is comprised of the nerves, muscles, and bones—all of which are interconnected and form the body's structure. What is the history of osteopathy? Osteopathy was founded in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still. Still was a Missouri physician who had become frustrated with what he viewed to be the ineffective and hazardous nature of remedies at that time. He believed that the doctor's role in combating disease was to restore proper musculoskeletal function to the body. Despite mainstream opposition, Still founded the American School of Osteopathy in Missouri in 1892. The school taught manual manipulation, nutrition, and lifestyle modifications rather than surgery and drug therapies. In 1896, Vermont became the first state to license DOs and the American Osteopathic Association was formed in 1901 to regulate the profession. Even with these important milestones, those in conventional medicine continued to disapprove of osteopathy until 1962 when DOs had full practice rights in all 50 states. By 1973, the California Medical Association invited DOs to join and become voting members.

Osteopathy was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D in 1874. Dr. Still was a both a physician and a minister. He treated his patients using what medical discipline that was available at the time and became increasingly frustrated with the severe toxicity associated with those treatments. He was ultimately propelled to find a different way when three of his sons died of spinal meningitis as he was helpless and could not offer them any treatment. Osteopathy Gains Recognition

Most D.O.s are primary care practitioners, specializing in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, or pediatrics. A few can be found in other medical specialties as well.

    What is osteopathic medicine?
Osteopathic medicine began as a holistic system of health care based on the ideas of Andrew Taylor Still, MD. This system emphasizes prevention of illness and the maintenance of good health. Therapeutic techniques, such as manipulation, address the relationship of the body's structure and function. Patients may also be counseled on exercise and diet. Osteopathic doctors (DOs) can also prescribe drugs or practice surgery. How is osteopathic medicine practiced? Osteopathic doctors may practice in any standard medical setting but most choose to enter private practice. The typical osteopathic doctor has family practice, often in a rural setting. What osteopathic medicine degrees or certificates are available? Training is very similar to allopathic physicians. The most visible difference between the two professions is the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Training in the standard osteopathic program lasts four academic years. Some residency programs can last up to seven years. DOs are licensed for the full practice of medicine and surgery in all 50 states.

    37. What's An Osteopath?
You might be surprised to learn that not all physicians have the letters MD after their names. Some have the letters DO (doctor of osteopathy).

It's easy to recognize physicians just by reading their names. After all, they have the letters MD after their names, right? But what if you see the letters DO? You might be surprised to learn that this is an abbreviation for another type of physician. Perhaps you aren't sure whether your child currently sees a DO (a doctor of osteopathic medicine; an osteopathic physician) or an MD (a doctor of medicine). Your main concern is that your child receives excellent medical care, and both MDs and DOs are good choices when it comes to your child's health

Still founded a school to teach his new system of osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892. Osteopathy was not the only system of spinal manipulation to be created in the late 19th century. Chiropractic, established in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer, aimed to relieve obstruction in the nerves rather than in the blood vessels. Osteopathy and chiropractic initially shared several characteristics. Both were founded when Americans freely chose from many systems of healing. Both were homegrown American systems created at about the same time by messianic Midwesterners. Both systems were seen by many Midwesterners as preferable to the reductionist European model of laboratory-based medicine, which was established most firmly on the eastern seaboard and was fast becoming the standard.
