Osteopathy emphasizes overall health and the relation among the body's nerves, muscles, bones, and organs. Doctors of osteopathy (DOs) base diagnosis and treatment on the idea that the body's systems are interconnected. Instead of treating specific symptoms or illnesses, DOs regard and treat the body as a whole. Osteopathic medicine focuses on disease prevention and health maintenance. Osteopathic doctors must complete 4 years of basic medical education from an accredited college of osteopathic medicine. Accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Postsecondary Education. Like medical doctors (MDs), DOs must complete an internship and residency program after their basic medical education.

This article is from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica. Medical science has made many leaps forward since it has been written. This is not a site for medical advice, when you need information on a medical condition, consult a professional instead. OSTEOPATHY. see Osteopathic diagnosis has but one aim, to find the cause. It includes the complete examination of the whole body and its excretions, especially the articulations and alignments of the vertebrae, ribs and pelvis. Symptoms are noted, and all chemical, microscopic, hygienic, sanitary, and other findings are studied to aid in determining the existing conditions of tissue, viscera and function. Of supreme importance, however, is the physical examination to discover existing mechanical tissue lesions. In this respect osteopathy stands alone among schools of medicine.
Osteopathic prevention or prophylaxis comprises systemic examination for incipient lesions, and their correction before function becomes disordered; individual hygiene and right living; public education in so using the body as to avoid injury, and in sanitation. Many osteopathic physicians specialize in certain branches, such as surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, defective and feeble-minded children, mental and nervous diseases, conditions involving the lymphatics, and eye, ear, nose and throat affections. The results secured through osteopathy with defective and under-developed children are such that judges in juvenile courts in many cities have designated osteopathic physicians to give these unfortunates professional care in a sincere effort to reclaim them before committing them to an institution. The success attending the efforts of those physicians specializing in nervous and mental diseases has been so marked that several sanatoria have been established for the exclusive care of persons so afflicted. The field of the eye, ear, nose and throat has, however, attracted by far the largest number of osteopathists who practise as specialists.

Craniomandibular osteopathy is a disorder that occurs in young dogs, primarily terriers. The most commonly affected breeds are West Highland White Terriers, Scottish Terriers and Cairn Terriers. It has been recognized in other terrier breeds and in Boxers, Labs, Great Danes and Dobermans. It usually shows up before 10 months of age. Excessive bone development occurs along the mandible (jaw) and the temporal region. Affected dogs have difficulty chewing and swallowing and may drool as a result of this. There can be great pain on opening the mouth but some dogs do not seem as pained as others. There is often fever accompanying this disorder. Weight loss can occur from the difficulty in eating. Atrophy (shrinking) of the muscles over the head and jaw areas can occur. X-rays show excessive bone production, sometimes very severe.

Qualifications for a doctor of osteopathy (DO)
There are four general areas of qualification for doctors of osteopathy:
  • Professional education Board certification Continuing medical education Licensure
  • Professional education Osteopathic physicians must graduate from an accredited osteopathic medical school in the United States. Medical school applicants must complete a course of undergraduate study (usually leading to a B.A. or B.S. degree with specific science courses), take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and complete a personal interview. Article continues below The Bureau of Professional Education of the AOA accredits these schools. The U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Postsecondary Education recognize the accreditation. The curriculum of osteopathic medical school involves four years of academic study emphasizing preventative, family and community medicine:
    • Years 1 and 2 focus on instruction in the biomedical sciences Years 3 and 4 are devoted to clinical training
Osteopathic principles and manipulative therapy are integrated into the four-year curriculum and include 300 to 500 hours of instruction in the study of the body’s neuro-musculo-skeletal system.

Osteopathy sharesmany of the same goals as traditional medicine, but places greater emphasis on the relationship between the organs and the musculoskeletal system .Osteopaths strongly believe in the healing power of the body and try to takeadvantage of that strength. They believe in treating the whole individual rather than just the disease. Osteopathy was founded in the 1890s by Dr. Andrew Taylor, who believed that the musculoskeletal system was central to health. Chiropractic , a related health discipline, also emphasizes the importance of the musculoskeletal system. The original theory behind both approaches presumed that energy flowing through the nervous system is influenced by the supporting structure that encases and protects itthe skull and vertebral column. A defect in the musculoskeletal system was believed to alter the flow of this energy and cause disease. Correcting the defect cured the disease. Defects were thought to be misalignmentsparts out of place by tiny distances. Treating misalignments became a matter of restoring the parts to their natural arrangement by adjustingthem.

    David S. Abend
TO THE EDITOR: Shekelle and colleagues under-represented the important contributions to spinal manipulation by the osteopathic medical profession. There are many osteopaths in the United States who use osteopathic manipulative treatment effectively in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The data and methods in the review were heavily biased in favor of chiropractic care, omitting many important publications by and including osteopathic physicians . Ironically, Andrew Taylor Still, MD, the founder of osteopathic medicine, discovered osteopathic manipulation and its holistic medical approach almost 20 years (1874) before chiropractic was discovered (1895), and D. D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic
