Owls are easily recognized; most everyone in the world knows about owls. They are considered creatures of mystery or doom or good luck, depending on where you are. They are wonderful birds to discover during the day, like this huge Great Gray Owl (left) in Yosemite Nat'l Park. But they are primarily nocturnal birds, hunting in the dark by using exceptional hearing and eyes that gather light much better than our own. This Buffy Fish-Owl (below right) was hunting over the tennis courts at the Danum research station in lowland Borneo, where I caught it in a flash. Since owls are night birds, they are difficult to see although their characteristic songs and calls can often be easily heard. I enjoy owls (and there is nothing so pleasant as going to sleep on a camping trips to a chorus of owls), but admit to not being much of an "owler." I tend to enjoy a drink after the sun sets, and there are other things to do indoors at night Stalking outside in the cold and dark for elusive critters, aiming a flashlight at where one thinks they are and rarely being correct, is not my idea of great fun, but there are field ornithologists who are exceptional at owling (Ben King comes to mind; his judicial use of tape and his insight into where an owl is likely to be sitting in extraordinary). Others are good at imitations and whistles and can "call in" the owls on their own, but I'm not one of them. Perhaps this explains why my percentage of the world's owls seen is much lower than most other families. I much prefer my owls in day roosts, like this

Over 200 species are distributed among approximately 27 genera. Owls are found world-wide, covering nearly all types of terrestrial habitats. Owls hunt a wide variety of prey, ranging from small mammals to birds, lizards, and insects; there are even fish-eating owls in Africa and Asia. Prey is often swallowed whole, and the fur, feathers, and bones are later regurgitated in pellets. Many owl species, especially those that hunt during night hours, are able to fly nearly silently. Several special feather adaptations make this possible. The leading edges of their outer primaries have stiff, comb-like fringes that reduce noise, the trailing edge of their primaries and secondaries have soft fringes that reduced turbulence behind the wings, and their primaries, secondaries, and wing coverts are covered in downy feathers that also reduce noise. Silent flight may be less important in those species that hunt over water or during the day, and many of these species do not have these adaptations.

The fourth graders of Estabrook School in Lexington, MA welcome you to our Owl Home Pages. All of the fourth grade classes have done extensive research about owls or other birds of prey. The research included reading both fiction and non-fiction books, visiting World Wide Web sites, visiting local Audobon Society museums, interviewing wildlife rehabilitators, dissecting owl pellets, listening for owls on a night walk, and much more. The students then assembled their research and creative writing into a book. For their home pages they have chosen their favorite graph, chart, map, or picture along with some accompanying text. The work was completed under the direction of their classroom teachers Renee Sack and Nancy Alloway, classroom tutor Ninfa Ortalono and student teacher Erin Whyte. This species is in the same genus as Ron's owl Pigwidgeon, who is a Eurasian Scops Owl By Laura Erickson (a.k.a. "Professor McGonagowl") (SPOILER discussion of Hedwig in Book 7 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is here.) No spoilers beyond this point: Now that five Harry Potter movies and all seven books have been released, people have become very familiar with owls. This website will give you facts about owls both in the real world and in J.K. Rowling's magical world. I live in the United States, but Harry Potter lives in England. Some owls live in both places, and some are found on only one side of the pond. I've studied owls for a long time and read all seven Harry Potter books and seen the movies, but I simply couldn't have written this and made it authoritative without a lot of help from a lot of people. If you have information I should add, corrections, or other comments, please email me In J.K. Rowling's wonderful universe, owls bridge the magical and muggle world, carrying messages, packages, and even Nimbus 2000s with ease as they make it clear to muggles that when a message needs to get through, it WILL get through. One Snowy Owl named Hedwig also provides warm companionship when a lonely wizard named Harry needs it.
