Composing literature in palindromes is an example of constrained writing . The word "palindrome" was coined from Greek roots palin ; "back") and dromos ; "way, direction") by English writer Ben Jonson in the 1600s. The actual Greek phrase to describe the phenomenon is karkinikª epigrafª crab inscription), or simply karkiniªoi ; crabs), alluding to the backward movement of crabs, like an inscription which can be read backwards.

Palindromes
A palindrome is a word or sentence that reads the same forward as it does backward. The words a and I are perhaps the simplest and least interesting palindromes; the word racecar and the name Hannah are more interesting and illustrative. Neither spaces nor punctuation are usually taken into consideration when constructing sentences that are palindromes one of the most famous palindromes is "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama" but when the spaces are properly positioned as well, so much the better. An example would be the also famous palindrome "Able was I ere I saw Elba," purportedly spoken by Napoleon, referring to his first sighting of Elba, the island where the British exiled him. Palindromes are a type of palingram called letter palingrams . A palingram is a sentence in which the letters, syllables, or words read the same backward as they do forward. The sentence, "He was, was he?" is a word palingram, because the words can be placed in reverse order and still read the same. The sentence, "I did, did I?" is not only a word palingram but a letter palingram (or palindrome) as well. A number of interesting palindromes are given below for your amusement. Can you make up your own?

Palindromes
A regular palindrome is a string of numbers or letters that is the same forward as backward. For example, the string "ABCDEDCBA" is a palindrome because it is the same when the string is read from left to right as when the string is read from right to left.
A mirrored string is a string for which when each of the elements of the string is changed to its reverse (if it has a reverse) and the string is read backwards the result is the same as the original string. For example, the string is a mirrored string because "A" and "I" are their own reverses, and and "E" are each others' reverses.
A mirrored palindrome is a string that meets the criteria of a regular palindrome and the criteria of a mirrored string. The string "ATOYOTA" is a mirrored palindrome because if the string is read backwards, the string is the same as the original and because if each of the characters is replaced by its reverse and the result is read backwards, the result is the same as the original string. Of course, "A" "T" "O" , and "Y" are all their own reverses.

P.A.L.I.N.D.R.O.M.E. Perfectly Arranged Letters, Incredibly Natural, Dramatically Reversed, Obviously Magically Enlightening. Palindromes are sentences that say the same thing backwards as they do forward. Palindromes have been around since ancient Greek times and exist in all languages, including Asian languages that use characters for their written word. Palindromes often turn out as gibberish, but then sometimes a Palindrome can be a very cool Spiritual message, as in the Palindrome: ''REVENGE BEG NEVER.'' Then sometimes they can be funny, as in the Palindrome: ''TO IDIOT.'' Over the past two and a half years I have created thousands of Palindromes. The following is that collection. If I have created a Palindrome that already exists, please forgive me. A great website to check is: http://www.eszlinger.com I have a couple of hundred Palindromes there that are not at this site. 'Twas when ''Palindrome Bob'' displayed my Palindromes with my pen name ZO beside them, that I decided to eventually build my own web page. With the help of my Wife Diana and Son Matthew. These thirty pages of Palindromes were originally put up in the Fall of 2001. Today, which is Friday, March, 17th, 2006, I'm going to start adding more.... about 400 to each page.

    What it's all about
The following description has been shamelessly stolen from John Walker's palindrome quest page Pick a number. Reverse its digits and add the resulting number to the original number. If the result isn't a palindrome, repeat the process. Do all numbers in base 10 eventually become palindromes through this process? Nobody knows. For example, start with 87. Applying this process, we obtain: 87 + 78 = 165 165 + 561 = 726 726 + 627 = 1353 1353 + 3531 = 4884, a palindrome Whether all numbers eventually become palindromic under this process is unproved, but all numbers less than 10,000 have been tested. Every one becomes a palindrome in a relatively small number of steps (of the 900 3-digit numbers, 90 are palindromes to start with and 735 of the remainder take less than 5 reversals and additions to yield a palindrome). Except, that is, for 196. This number had been carried through 50,000 reversals and additions by P. C. Leyland, yielding a number of more than 26,000 digits without producing a palindrome. Later, P. Anderton continued the process up to 70,928 digits without encountering a palindrome. John then goes on to explain how, over the three years prior to 1990, he took this number out to 1,000,000 (one million) digits without it becoming a palindrome. Others have taken it further.

    Those Amazing Palindromes
    by

It is not totally clear when palindromic numbers really came into being nor is it clear who deserves the credit for creating the numbers. Suffice it to say that the numbers have some fascinating properties that bear investigating. Palindromes were first used in language to define words or lines that read the same backwards or forward. The word is of Greek origin coming from "palin dromo" which translates approximately to "to read back again." Examples of palindromes include: "Madam, I'm Adam"
    and
"Roma tibi subito motibus ibit amor."
They have also been called Sotadics after their reputed inventor Sotades, a Greek poet who lived around 300BC. Palindromic words were also used in other languages including English. The longest palindrome in English probably is: "Dog as a devil deified
    Deified lived as a god"
Two other well known palindromes are "Lewd did I live, evil I did dwel"
and Napoleon's famous reputed quotation: "Able was I ere I saw Elba."
