edit Panic Disorder
With this form of anxiety disorder the patient has recurrent panic attacks (at least 4 of the 13 symptoms listed under "panic attack"). This is unexpected and the patient is now worried for more than 1 month about getting another such attack or starts to change the behavior to avoid another attack. Panic attacks (with or without agoraphobia) occur in about 3% of the population in a lifetime. About 40% of patients with panic attacks also have agoraphobia. Panic disorders occur in the late teens and then in a second peak in the mid 30's. The clinical course of the illness is such that it waxes and wanes. About 10 years from the initial diagnosis about 30% are well, 45% are improved, but are still symptomatic and 25% have symptoms, which are the same or even worse. First degree relatives have a 6-fold higher chance of developing a panic disorder. Treatment for panic disorders: This disorder requires usually a combination therapy involving some medication to control the anxiety as well as some form of counseling therapy, which also helps to monitor the progress over a period of time.

About 20% of adults will experience at least one panic attack at some time in their lives.
Panic disorder tends to have a sudden onset, most frequently during late 20s and early 30s with most patients vividly remembering their first episodes. CAUSES
  • SYMPTOMS
During the panic episode itself, the following symptoms can occur:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Heart palpitations
    • Dizziness, unsteadiness, or faintness
    • Choking
    • Sweating
    • Nausea or abdominal distress
    • Feeling of unreality
    • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
    • Hot and cold flashes
    • Chest pain or discomfort
    • Fears of going crazy or losing control
Panic disorder may be associated with no impairment in social or occupational functioning, or else may be associated with extreme impairment, particularly if combined with agoraphobia. Panic disorder, in general is a chronic disorder, although its course is variable both among patients and within patients. If untreated, the panic attacks usually occur several times a week or even daily. Recurrent attacks may continue for several weeks or months and may even continue for years especially if associated with agoraphobia. During this time there may be periods of full or partial remission (i.e., with no panic attacks or only mild attacks with few symptoms).

My heart pounds really hard, I feel like I can't get my breath, and there's an overwhelming feeling that things are crashing in on me." "In between attacks there is this dread and anxiety that it's going to happen again. I'm afraid to go back to places where I've had an attack. Unless I get help, there soon won't be anyplace where I can go and feel safe from panic." "It started 10 years ago, when I had just graduated from college and started a new job. I was sitting in a business seminar in a hotel and this thing came out of the blue. I felt like I was dying."
What are the symptoms of panic disorder?
People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. An attack generally peaks within 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer.

What is panic disorder? Panic disorder is a real illness that can be treated to help a person have a healthy and full life. It is a type of anxiety disorder . With this disorder, a person can feel frequent and sudden intense fear for no reason. These frequent "bursts" of intense fear are called panic attacks. During these attacks, you can have scary physical feelings like a fast heartbeat, trouble breathing, or dizziness. Panic attacks can happen at any time and without any warning. They can happen anywhere - in grocery stores, malls, crowds, or when traveling. A person can live in constant fear of another attack, staying away from places where past attacks have happened. This fear can take over a person's life, making her or him unable to leave their home (a condition called agorophobia ). While panic attacks don't last long, they are scary, making them feel like they could last forever. This disorder can last for a few months or go on for many years, even with treatment. It's important to know that when a person has this illness, it's not her or his fault. And, it's not something a person can just "snap out of." No one knows for sure what causes panic disorder. It most often starts when people are young, around 18 to 24 years old. It also can begin when a person is already under a lot of stress, such as after the death of a loved one or having a baby. While anyone can have this disorder, it affects women more than it does men. And, it can run in families.

    Panic Disorder
by: Gordon Ball, Ph.D. - Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY As many as three percent of people in the United States suffer from panic disorder. Most people experience their first attack in their twenties, but attacks can start at any age, including the very young and very old. Most people describe their first panic attack as the most traumatic experience they have ever had. In general, we don't know what causes the first attack, but extremely stressful situation seem to be one contributing factor. Fortunately, panic attacks are not life-threatening, and full-blown attacks tend to last for only a few minutes. A panic attack is a frightening experience. Suddenly, out of nowhere, you may feel like you are having a heart attack, suffocating, or going crazy. You may have the feeling that something has gone wrong inside your body, and you are filled with dread and terror.

Panic disorder causes episodes of irrational fear and panic called "panic attacks". In addition to the mental symptoms of fear , panic, and terror, these attacks often lead to physical symptoms such as chest pain difficulty breathing rapid pulse , and various other symptoms . These symptoms can be so severe that many first-time sufferers believe they are having a heart attack or are dying, and go to a hospital emergency room for diagnosis. A single panic attack does not necessarily mean a diagnosis of panic disorder, but multiple episodes usually does. Once an attack can occur, people can get into a vicious cycle of so-called "anticipatory anxiety", where the fear of having an attack leads to increased anxiety. In some cases, people start to avoid places or events that trigger an attack, leading to
