More detailed definitions tend to emphasize the idea that natural law existence , and the Universe (the sum total of all that is, was, and shall be) is represented in the theological principle of an abstract 'god' rather than a personal, creative deity or deities of any kind. This is the key feature which distinguishes them from panentheists and pandeists . As such, although many religions may claim to hold pantheistic elements, they are more commonly panentheistic or pandeistic in nature.

Those who dwell...among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. . . Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. Are you searching for a path that focuses on this Earth rather than some imaginary beyond, that makes saving the planet its focus not saving your eternal soul, that respects individual choice rather than pushing prejudice down people's throats, that values reason rather than fanaticism? Pantheism
First published Tue Jun 4, 1996; substantive revision Thu May 17, 2007 The book recognized as containing the most complete attempt at explaining and defending pantheism from a philosophical perspective is Spinoza's Ethics , finished in 1675 two years before his death. In 1720 John Toland wrote the Pantheisticon: or The Form of Celebrating the Socratic-Society in Latin. He (possibly) coined the term "pantheist" and used it as a synonym for "Spinozist." However, aside from some interesting pantheistic sounding slogans (like "Every Thing is to All, as All is to Every Thing"), and despite promising "A short Dissertation upon a Two-fold philosophy of the Pantheists" Toland's work has little to do with pantheism.
1. Pantheism and Theism
Where pantheism is considered as an alternative Not all of the problems generated by the theistic notion of God are also problems for pantheism. But given a suitable reformulation, some of them will be. And, as expected, pantheism will also generate some difficulties peculiar to itself. Thus, although evil and creation do not present identical problems for pantheism and theism, and may even be inherent to theism; it may also be possible to reformulate them in a way that makes them applicable to pantheism. There may be pantheistic counterparts to the problem of evil and other classical theistic problems, and perhaps they can be resolved by pantheism.

Pantheism
Pantheism is the philosophy that everything is God (pan="everything" theos="God") or that the universe and nature are divine Pantheism is distinguished from panentheism, which holds that God is in everything, but also transcends the Universe. Strict pantheism is not a theism. It does not believe in a transcendent or personal God who is the creator of the universe and the judge of humans. Many pantheists feel the word "God" is too loaded with these connotations and never use the word in their own practice - though they may use it to simplify, or to explain things to theists. Pantheism has often been accused of atheism , and not just because it rejects the idea of a personal creator God. Strict or naturalistic pantheism believes that the Universe either originated itself out of nothing, or has existed forever. Modern scientific pantheism is materialistic. It believes that design in the universe can be fully accounted for by principles of evolution and self-organization . It does not believe in separate spirits or survival of the soul after death. Pantheists concerned about personal immortality seek it in realistic ways - through children, deeds, works, and the memories of the living.

(From Greek pan , all; theos , god). The view according to which God and the world are one. The name pantheist was introduced by John Toland (1670-1722) in his "Socinianism truly Stated " (1705), while pantheism was first used by his opponent Fay in "Defensio Religionis" (1709). Toland published his "Pantheisticon" in 1732. The doctrine itself goes back to the early Indian philosophy ; it appears during the course of history in a great variety of forms , and it enters into or draws support from so many other systems that, as Professor Flint says ("Antitheistic Theories ", 334), "there is probably no pure pantheism". Taken in the strictest sense, i.e. as identifying God and the world, Pantheism is simply Atheism . In any of its forms it involves Monism , but the latter is not necessarily pantheistic. Emanationism may easily take on a pantheistic meaning and as pointed out in the Encyclical "Pascendi dominici gregis ", the same is true of the modern doctrine of immanence

Two questions then arise: What is the nature of this being? How are the manifold appearances to be explained? The principal answers are incorporated in such different earlier systems as

"I wish there was one person in my life I could show. One instinctive, absolutely unbrisk person I could take to Greece, and stand in front of certain shrines and sacred streams and say, 'Look! Life is only comprehensive through a thousand local gods. And not just the old dead ones with names like Zeus - no, but living Geniuses of Place and Person! And not just Greece but modern England! Spirits of certain trees, certain curves of brick wall, certain chip shops, if you like, and slate roofs - just as of certain frowns in people and slouches' ...I'd say to them - 'Worship as many gods as you can see - and more will appear!' ...If I had a son, I bet you he'd come out exactly like his mother. Utterly worshipless." - from Equus by Peter Shaffer, 1973 (Act 1:18)
For all that lives is holy. - William Blake Pantheism is the belief that everything is god, and that god is everything. I have trouble explaining this clearly to people, especially in writing. One friend thinks I worship stones - and I do, but not in the sense that implies. Another friend described me as worshipping Pan, and that isn't the point either. It's a misleading pun. Let me try to explain.... The true essence of divinity is ineffable - which means it can't be explained in words. All religions have this situation, and they overcome it by using words and ideas to get as close as they can to the meanings they intend. No one can describe the indescribable, not even mystics and seers. But they try.

Pantheism
Pantheism is the doctrine that the universe conceived of as a whole is God and, conversely, that there is no God but the combined substance, forces, and laws that are manifested in the existing universe. The cognate doctrine of panentheism asserts that God includes the universe as a part though not the whole of his being. The adjective pantheist was coined by the rationalist freethinker John Toland in his book Socinianism Truly Stated The noun pantheism was first used a few years later by one of Toland's opponents. K.C.F. Krause introduced the term panentheism in 1828 as a designation for his own philosophy. Both of these terms have been applied retrospectively to aspects of numerous philosophical traditions, both Eastern and Western. There are several discernible types of Pantheism, ranging from those that attribute consciousness to nature as a whole (panpsychism) to those that interpret the world as merely an appearance and ultimately unreal (acosmic pantheism), and from the rational Neoplatonic, or emanationistic, strain to the intuitive, mystical strain. A mingling of these types characterizes Hindu and Buddhist doctrines; pantheism of one form or another is deeply rooted in the Vedas, the Upanisads, and the Bhagavadgita. Numerous Greek philosophers, notably Xenophanes, Heracleitus, Anaxagoras, Plato, Plotinus, and the proponents of Stoicism, contributed to the foundations of Western pantheism.

Definition:
Pantheist (pan=all; theos=god) is a term coined in 1705 by John Toland for someone who believes that everything is God. On this basis in 1732, the Christian apologist Daniel Waterland used the noun "pantheism" for the first time, condemning the belief as "scandalously bad... scarce differing from... Atheism." Under pantheistic theory, only God exists and all that exists is God. There are various forms of pantheism, but the most common argues that the totality of reality - you, the computer, everything - is a part of God. Another common form is that simply the universe itself or perhaps the laws of nature are God. There are four named categories of pantheism in the literature: Theomonistic Pantheism : Only God exists and the independent existence of nature is denied - also referred to as acosmism (a-*cos-mism, or "no-world") Physiomonistic Pantheism : Only nature or the universe exist, but they are referred to with the term "God". Thus, God is denied having independent existence.

    Pantheism: It's Everywhere
Seeing the universe as a profound unity, pantheists turn to nature for spiritual inspiration. By Mary Jacobs
(RNS) "God is not the voice in the whirlwind," wrote novelist Margaret Atwood. "God is the whirlwind." If you believe that, you may be a pantheist a person who views the universe and nature as divine. Pantheism once an obscure philosophy touted only by the rare intellectual is currently weighing in again on the spiritual scene, thanks to the Internet. The World Pantheist Movement (www.pantheism.net), founded in 1998, now claims 2,000 members in 56 countries, with active local groups in San Diego, Calif., London, Cleveland and other cities. But founder Paul Harrison of Calabasas, Calif., believes there are many more out there who are pantheists and just don't know it.

A discussion of Pantheism and Deism
by Lewis Loflin Pantheism is just spiritual atheism, that has no relation to Deism. It claims to be based on science, but is poisoning science with pagan philosophy and mindless mysticism. It's become a type of fundamentalist' religion increasingly driven by emotion devoid of reason. This discussion will look at just what pantheism is and how it is a threat to humanity. Just wanted to say that Pantheism isn't just thinking nature is god, it's more the believe that the Universe is god. Believing that people would also be god is not a 'request' for pantheism. And I also need to disappoint you with the fact that Pantheism isn't New Age (at least, in your description of New Age) Also, saying that Pantheism is without reason isn't right as well (I am pantheist because of reason) Overall, Pantheism is the definition of people who believe in that the universe is divine, it's therefore more an extension to Deism.

18. PANENTHEISM VS. PANTHEISM
Why and how Panentheism avoids the pitfalls of pantheism.
http://www.websyte.com/alan/pan.htm
PANENTHEISM VS. PANTHEISM
The following is an excerpt from New Thought: A Practical American Spirituality , pp. 89-92. Pantheism and Panentheism This universal arrangement is not pantheism (all is God), but panentheism , a term devised by Karl C. F. Krause (1781-1832) to describe his thought. It is best known for its use by Charles Hartshorne and recently by Matthew Fox. Panentheism says that all is in God, somewhat as if God were the ocean and we were fish. If one considers what is in God's body to be part of God, then we can say that God is all there is and then some. The universe is God's body, but God's awareness or personality is greater than the sum of all the parts of the universe. All the parts have some degree of freedom in co-creating with God. At the start of its momentary career as a subject, an experience is Godas the divine initial aim. As the experience carries on its choosing process, it is a freely aiming reality that is not strictly God, since it departs from God's purpose to some degree. Yet everything is within God. The most practical value of pantheism is that it recognizes the presence of God everywhere, but it does this at an enormous cost. It provides for the presence of God as the only actor; God's presence is an overriding presence that cancels the possibility of the existence of anything else, of any genuine beloved, of any loving or unloving response to God. In pantheism, human existence or any other finite existence is at best a mystery. Explanation in any satisfying sense is impossible. There can be affirmation that there is nothing but God, but where that leaves the affirmer is unclear; his or her existence is no more than appearance, and enlightenment brings recognition of one's illusory status as a unique, permanent perspective in reality.

Definition of Pantheism
Pantheism
[This concept has been resurrected in New Age thought (From Greek pan , all; theos , god). The view according to which God and the world are one. The name pantheist was introduced by John Toland (1670-1722) in his "Socinianism truly Stated" (1705), while pantheism was first used by his opponent Fay in "Defensio Religionis" (1709). Toland published his "Pantheisticon" in 1732. The doctrine itself goes back to the early Indian philosophy; it appears during the course of history in a great variety of forms, and it enters into or draws support from so many other systems that, as Professor Flint says ("Antitheistic Theories", 334), "there is probably no pure pantheism". Taken in the strictest sense, i.e. as identifying God and the world, Pantheism is simply Atheism. In any of its forms it involves Monism (q.v.), but the latter is not necessarily pantheistic. Emanationism (q.v.) may easily take on a pantheistic meaning and as pointed out in the Encyclical, "Pascendi dominici gregis" the same is true of the modern doctrine of immanence (q.v.).
VARIETIES
These agree in the fundamental doctrine that beneath the apparent diversity and multiplicity of things in the universe there is one only being absolutely necessary, eternal, and infinite. Two questions then arise: What is the nature of this being? How are the manifold appearances to be explained? The principal answers are incorporated in such different earlier systems as Brahminism, Stoicism, Neo-Platonism, and Gnosticism, and in the later systems of Scotus Eriugena and Giordano Bruno (qq.v.).
