Nature of the work
A pediatrician is concerned with the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. Care encompasses a broad spectrum of health services ranging from preventive health care to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. Pediatricians can receive training in the following subspecialties:
  • Adolescent Medicine Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Pediatric Cardiology Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Pediatric Emergency Medicine Pediatric Endocrinology Pediatric Gastroenterology Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Infectious Diseases Pediatric Nephrology Pediatric Pulmonology Pediatric Rheumatology Pediatric Sports Medicine
Training/residency information
Following graduation from medical school, pediatricians complete 3 years of education in a pediatric residency program. The 3-year residency includes mandated rotations in general pediatrics, normal newborn care, and time in selected subspecialty areas. Up to 3 additional years of training are required to be certified in a subspecialty.
Workforce and salary information
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, opportunities for pediatricians have increased and will continue to increase with the growth of managed care. Annual income of primary care pediatricians is comparable with other primary care physicians and ranges from approximately $142,917 to $195,000.

Our understanding of celiac disease (CD) has undergone significant change in the last four decades. Once considered primarily a disease of early childhood, CD is now recognized to be a permanent (lifelong) sensitivity to gluten in wheat and related proteins found in barley and rye. Tuesday, May 27, 2008 What is the Diagnostic Criteria for PANDAS? Patient Presentation A 10-year-old male came to clinic with past medical history
showed a boy who was described as "sensitive" but not a worrier. He had some viral-induced bronchospasm as a preschooler. The family history was negative for any neurological or psychiatric illnesses except for an aunt with post-partum depression and a paternal cousin with attention deficit disorder. Older family members had coronary artery disease or strokes. The review of systems was negative including fevers, weight changes, sweating, and chills. He also denied any visual or auditory hallucinations, tics, orchoreiform movements. He was having problems sleeping. The
