Penguins
Penguins often are referred to as "flippered flyers" due to their effortless movement through the water and their possible evolution from gull-like birds. Its believed that 40-50 million years ago, while Antarctica breaking away form Gondwanaland, penguins also were separating to form their own species. Originally, indigenous to warmer climates, penguins adapted to the cold as Antarctica made its move southward.
Part of their adaptation to the cold includes oily, unwettable feathers which cover the outer layers of penguins (and what gives that distinguished, well dressed look). Underneath is a layer of soft down feathers and under that a thick layer of fat. This keeps the penguins so warm they will actually fluff their feather to released trapped heat in order to cool down.
In addition to their fine attire, penguins are well known for their swimming abilities. Using their flippers for propulsion and their feet as a rudder, penguins can swim in excess of 12 mph (20 kph). Through the use of air sacs to protect their lungs, penguins can stay under water for 15 to 20 minutes and dive as deep as 275 feet (900 meters).
In the water, penguins typically feed on krill and fish. The dietary habits of penguins are relatively easy to monitor. Krill eating penguins excrete pink quano, while those eating fish leave behind white guano. The yolks of penguins eggs often are red denoting the consumption of krill.

Meet those well-loved, well-dressed flightless birds in THE WORLD OF PENGUINS.
We all have an image of penguins gliding on ice at the South Pole images that come from childhood. But contrary to popular belief penguins live beyond Antarctica, and can be found in New Zealand, southern Africa, and South America. While some species have adapted to life in regions that reach 100 degrees below zero others are comfortable in temperatures 100 degrees above. The classic tuxedoed penguins are found in Antarctica, along with the largest, the Emperor penguins, while Jackass penguins flourish in Namibia and South Africa and Humboldts live on a desert landscape near the coasts of Peru and Chile.
Though they are considered birds they lay eggs and have feathers penguins spend most of their lives at sea as fast and powerful predators a stark contrast to the clumsy, waddling penguin on land. The penguin's powerful flippers, gives them the ability to dive and hunt at ocean depths where no other bird can go.
No matter how awkward it is, every penguin must return to land. Each year penguins forsake the sea and struggle ashore to mate and lay eggs. Rockhopper penguins climb 90 foot cliffs to their nest; Adelies travel 3,000 perilous miles to breeding colonies.

by Karen Lynch Introduction Welcome to Penguins! You have just entered a special unit created for kids to learn about how special penguins are. Your job is to complete each task. Click on Task 1. When you are finished, continue with Task 2, and so on. At the end, you will write an original "Penguin Poem" from the information you have learned. Then you will evaluate your poem and your classmates' poems using a 5 point rubric. Let's Begin! What is A Penguin? (task 1) Penguin Parents (task 2) Penguin Survival (task 3) Where Do Penguins Live? Conclusion
You have been a "penguintologist" ( a scientist that studies penguins) that traveled on the Internet learning about Penguins. First you looked at are several species of penguins. Can you believe that there are 17 different types of penguins. Then you compared a penguin to a bird using a Venn diagram. Next, you learned how penguins adapt to their environment and how they take care of their young. Next you saw that all penguins live south of the equator. Last you wrote and evaluated an original penguin poem that you and your classmates wrote.

A Question About Penguins When do penguins change their clothes?
They must have others, I suppose.
Can it be that they're always dressed
In party clothes, that can't be messed?
Gathered in suits of black and white
Perfect for some formal night -
Do they expect a king or queen
To grace their distant glacial scene
It would make me feel much better
If I knew they each owned a sweater. Penguins Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right. They stand on the ice and they look very neat, As they waddle along on their little flat feet. Penguin Shuffle Penguins shuffle shuffle to the Left left left Penguins shuffle shuffle shuffle to the Right right right Give a little wiggle Give a little hop Waddle round the iceberg Never want to stop! Penguin I know a bird That cannot fly: Penguin is its name. It cannot fly, But it can swim With speed that wins it fame! I know a bird That lives on ice And waddles by the sea.

Rejected baby penguin finds a mom
For the past few weeks, Caitlin Hume and fellow New England Aquarium biologist Heather Urquhart have been mothering a 22oz Little Blue Penguin that was rejected by its parents after a difficult hatching.
Little Blue Penguins are native to Australia and New Zealand.
Each night, the two surrogate mums delicately pack the baby - covered in soft, grey-blue down - into a plastic cooler. Inside, the bird rests comfortably, swaddled in a white towel for the car ride home.

Penguins in Antarctica
Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo, Macaroni, and Emperor
Penguins are unique birds in that they do not fly. Their wings are adapted as swimming flippers by their wing bones being flattened and rather solidly joined so that they are very useful for swimming (up to 30 miles per hour). Penguins often look like they are flying when viewed under water.
Most penguins spend the majority of their life at sea and return to land to reproduce. Getting to and from their reproductive areas (called rookeries) on land can be quite a walk but when there is snow to traverse, they often sled downhill to make quick descents.
On land, penguins walk (often in straight lines) to and from the ocean between their nesting colonies and their feeding grounds in the ocean (left). These trips can be only a few hundred yards over rocky beaches (like the picture above left) or they can be miles inland, often over snow and ice. Penguins tend to follow the same paths to and from the ocean to feed and bathe. When there is snow in their path they leave footprints (right). Most penguin species spend the year at sea without staying with their mate

Like animals everywhere, Antarctic penguins are adjusting, or not, to changes in their habitat brought by warming temperatures. With extensive field research on their existing colonies, and a 30,000 year-old record contained in deposits of their bones, we know more about how Antarctic penguins will adjust to rapid climate change than almost any other creature on Earth. 38. Penguin Adaptation
How penguins have adapted to survive in the harsh Antarctic. From the Gulf of Maine Aquarium, geared towards students and teachers.
http://www.gma.org/surfing/antarctica/penguin.html
Penguin Adaptation
Penguins are designed for life in the sea. Some species spend as much as 75% of their lives in the water. (They lay their eggs and to raise their chicks on land.) Heavy, solid bones act like a diver's weight belt, allowing them to stay underwater. Their wings, shaped like flippers, help them "fly" underwater at speeds up to 15 mph. A streamlined body, paddle-like feet, insulating blubber, and watertight feathers all add to their efficiency and comfort underwater. They also have a remarkable deep-diving ability. In addition to blubber for insulating warmth, penguins have stiff, tightly packed feathers (up to 70 per sq. in.) that overlap to provide waterproofing. They coat their feathers with oil from a gland near the tail to increase impermeability. Black and white countershading makes them nearly invisible to predators from above and below. Like most birds, penguins have little or no sense of smell (a boon for those in a crowded penguin rookery!) Like other birds, their sense of taste is also limited. Their vision appears to be better when they are underwater. Scientists suspect they may be nearsighted on land. Penguins are considered to be the most social of birds. Rookeries may contain thousands of individuals. (As many as 24 million penguins visit the Antarctic continent!) Even at sea, they tend to swim and feed in groups.
