I'm an optimistic old fart. Love to Stumble, love to learn, love a great sense of humor. After retiring as a writer/creative director in advertising, I lived in France and Central America for a while. Now I need to relax, so I enjoy learning, the source of youth that we never can outgrow. Besides searching the cyber world for mysterious URLs, I run a very active Yahoo Group for over-forties around the world. Another on Mireille Mathieu. If you like to meet new folks all over, just ask. It's non-political and therefore non-violent and pleasant. Just plain fun...oh, and we learn a lot from one another. Did I say, "never too old"?

Peru History
If there is one country that has interesting chronicles of old to the extent where archaeologists themselves are having a hard time proving when was the exact period of the start of its civilization, Peru history would more than qualify. If you browse through books, you would not fail to discover about the remarkable empire initiated by the Ancient Incas. However, when you take a much earlier trip down memory lane, you would learn that there were still even more indigenous people who inhabited the region. Surprised? Well, let that feeling keep you from digging into the past.
Recent studies of Peru history would render that human beings began to settle in the country some seven thousand years ago. Fossils of man were excavated in the town of Chilca which was said to have dated about 4000BC. There were two other anonymous sites that were found to have existed since 2000BC. The individuals survived by fishing where they employed either nets or hooks to catch aquatic species such as sea urchins and huge crabs. They also went into farming where diverse crops were planted such as beans and squashes. Cotton was also sowed where by harvest season, was utilized to produce clothing.
Peru history continues about the settlements along the shorelines. It is none other than the enigmatic district of Kotosh which is in close proximity to Huanuco, one of the first remnants in the highlands of the country. There is only little story known about the locals who belonged in the village but what spoke about them were the buildings that most likely, they were the ones responsible in construction. In comparison to the rest, their structures were kind of advance especially at their age. Aside from the standing ruins, hundred year old pottery fragments were also sighted.

When the Spanish landed in 1531, Peru's territory was the nucleus of the highly developed Inca civilization. Centered at Cuzco, the Inca Empire extended over a vast region from northern Ecuador to central Chile. In search of Inca wealth, the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, who arrived in the territory after the Incas had fought a debilitating civil war, conquered the weakened people. The Spanish had captured the Incan capital at Cuzco by 1533 and consolidated their control by 1542. Gold and silver from the Andes enriched the conquerors, and Peru became the principal source of Spanish wealth and power in South America.
Pizarro founded Lima in 1535. The viceroyalty established at Lima in 1542 initially had jurisdiction over all of South America except Portuguese Brazil. By the time of the wars of independence (1820-24), Lima had become the most distinguished and aristocratic colonial capital and the chief Spanish stronghold in America.
Peru's independence movement was led by Jose de San Martin of Argentina and Simon Bolivar of Venezuela. San Martin proclaimed Peruvian independence from Spain on July 28, 1821. Emancipation was completed in December 1824, when Gen. Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish troops at Ayacucho, ending Spanish rule in South America. Spain made futile attempts to regain its former colonies, but in 1879 it finally recognized Peru's independence.
