Historians believe the Philippines dates back to the Paleolithic age. Based on the archeological artifacts recovered, Filipino society and culture were fairly developed prior to contacts with other countries. Filipinos had commercial relations early on with China, Indo-China, Malaysia, India, and the Arab countries. Chinese silk, porcelain, jars, gold, ivory, and beads were traded for wax, bird's nest, teakwood, rattan, pearls, precious stones, and other marine and forest products. Ferdinand Magellan came to the Philippines on March 16, 1521 and claimed the country for the Spanish Crown. A colonial government was established in Manila in 1571. Spain introduced changes in the political, social, and cultural life of the people. One of these is Christianity. In 1896, the Filipinos staged the first nationalistic revolution in Asia against the Spaniards. The 1896 Revolution was the culmination of a succession of revolts against Spanish oppression. The death by musketry of Dr. Jose Rizal, who led the reform movement, fueled the fires of revolution. On June 12, 1898, leaders of the revolution declared the country's sovereign state and proclaimed the first Republic of the Philippines, the first constitutional democracy in Asia. Meanwhile, Spain declared war against the United States over Cuba and was defeated. As an offshoot, the Philippines was ceded to America by Spain through the Treaty of Paris.

History of Philippines
There’s a legend that claims that the Philippines was settled by Bornean datus who founded a political confederation in the Visayas and wrote legal codes. These legendary and fictional accounts, found in Maragtas and Code of Kalantiaw, were taught as factual history by thy Spanish colonizers showed that the Philippines developed an early civilization of free barangay kingdoms ruled by a datu (chief) with a class structure and a rich Indo-Malay culture influenced by China, India, Arabia and Japan. two early Chinese writers, Chao Jukua (1225) and Wang Ta-yuan (1349) described Sino-Philippine trade and praised the honesty of the Filipinos to China from 1371-1421. Islam came to Southern Philippines in 1380 and the first Islamic was established in Jolo in 1450.

HISTORY
The history of the Philippines may be divided into four distinct phases: the pre-Spanish period (before 1521); the Spanish period (1521-1898); the American period (1898-1946); and the years since independence (1946-present). Pre-Spanish Period The first people in the Philippines, the Negritos, are believed to have come to the islands 30,000 years ago from Borneo and Sumatra, making their way across then-existing land bridges. Subsequently, people of Malay stock came from the south in successive waves, the earliest by land bridges and later in boats called barangays. The Malays settled in scattered communities, also called barangays, which were ruled by chieftains known as datus. Chinese merchants and traders arrived and settled in the ninth century A.D. In the 14th century, Arabs arrived, introducing Islam in the south and extending some influence even into Luzon. The Malays, however, remained the dominant group until the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Spanish Period Ferdinand Magellan claimed the Philippines for Spain in 1521, and for the next 377 years, the islands were under Spanish rule. This period was the era of conversion to Roman Catholicism. A Spanish colonial social system was developed, complete with a strong centralized government and considerable clerical influence. The Filipinos were restive under the Spanish, and this long period was marked by numerous uprisings. The most important of these began in 1896 under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo and continued until the Americans defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War. Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898.

Ken's Return Visit Ken was invited back to the Philippines in 1990 and in 1992 with Rev. Ed Lacy, one of the men he had worked with during the first visit. During these visits, several Filipino pastors shared their concerns with him: These men had given their all for the Gospel. They told Ken of a need for outside encouragement, support, and accountability. The Good Shepherd International Fellowship was founded for this very purpose, as a "ministry to ministers." Ken offered to introduce his friends to Rev. Peschke and the Fellowship. In addition the GSIF would provide them with licensing and/or ordination which would give them legal recognition with the Filipino Government. The Fellowship would leave them free to carry out their own vision and administration without interference. In several areas of Mindanao and Cebu, they met with pastors and other ministers to learn of their visions, ministries, and needs. Everywhere they traveled, Revs. Peschke, Bradford, and Garcia enjoyed fellowship and Filipino Christian hospitality. They shared the GSIF's vision of unity and told the national pastors that "You will not be required to change the name of your church, pay tithes to the Fellowship or conform to restrictions which are usually required by denominational affiliations in the Philippines."!np!

About us Philippines England Places ... places The Philippines consists of approximately 7,100 islands , although this number varies depending on whether it is high or low tide. Two thousand are inhabited. The largest are Luzon , about 104,000 square kilometres, which contains the capital, Manila; Mindanao , of about 94,500 Km which includes the second city, Davao. Cebu is part of a group of smaller islands known collectively as the Visayas. Agitation for Philippine independence grew in the nineteenth century. Jose Rizal was born in 1861, and studied medicine, philosophy and literary science in Spain, France and Germany before returning to his homeland. While abroad he had published two inflammatory works, effectively calling for Philippine freedom from Spanish oppression. He founded a reform movement, upon which he was promptly arrested and exiled. But his ideas had taken root and eventually led to an uprising in 1896. He was executed by firing squad in December of that year. He is now revered as the Philippines' national hero.

LITR 4333: American Immigrant Literature
Sample Student Research Project 2002

LITR 4333
April 22, 2002 Research Journal on the Filipino American Literary Heritage, Focusing on Carlos Bulosan Introduction “According to indigenous folklore, the people that we know today as Filipinos arose froma single bamboo reed,” (Likha 1) thus beginning an intricate and fascinating history of the people of the Philippines. Included in the Asian American Diaspora, Pilipino colonial history makes them one of the most “westernized” people in Asia and creates a diversity understood only through the context of their national history and immigration patterns. Beginning this project, I chose Filipino (Americans) as my focus in an attempt to relate the seeming obscurity of American Immigrant Literature to myself and my family. Though of European-American heritage, I married into a Filipino/German family with a recent immigrant history through my father-in-law, Albert Toledo Ruiz. In researching the history of the Filipino literary tradition in America, I realized the lack of historical context in which to place the writers and their work, and in doing so decided to devote part of my research journal to a history of the Philippines, as well as a small glossary of terms which I will be using throughout the journal. Finding specific information about the authors proved challenging as discrepancies abound, but Carlos Bulosan is the focus of my Author Study section.
