Diagnosis
In superficial thrombophlebitis, the location of the clot can sometimes be seen by the unaided eye. Blood clots are hard and can usually be detected by a physician using palpation (massage). Deep venous thrombosis requires specialized diagnostic instruments to detect the blood clot. Among the instruments a physician may use are ultrasound and x ray, coupled with dye injection (venogram).

Recurrence of intravenous-diazepam-induced phlebitis from oral diazepam
RD Brandstetter and VP Gotz A patient who developed phlebitis from the intravenous administration of diazepam is described. This episode resolved in two days after treatment with moist heat packs. Three days after complete resolution, the phlebitis recurred approximately eight hours after a single oral dose of diazepam. This recurrence of phlebitis resolved slowly over seven days, with warm soaking and aspirin therapy. Oral diazepam may have exacerbated the initial phlebitis by interfering with a subclinical healing process.

Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis in the most general of terms means (inflamation of a vein), but refers to clots that form in the vein. The most common plebitis occurs in veins close to the skins's surface, often found in the legs. We also call this spider veins. Although annoying, this type of inflamation is usually harmless and typically goes away after a few days. A more serious form of phlebitis ocurs in the deeper interior veins of the legs. This type of phlebitis is more dangerous but less common. Interior veins are larger, clots tend to be bigger as well and are more likely to break free, traveling to the lungs. Most people with Deep Phlebitis don't even know they have it and don't seek medical help until it becomes a medical emergency. Symptoms of superficial Phlebitis include: A red, visible vein in your leg. Usually the vein feels hard to the touch, warm and tender. A throbbing sensation will sometimes ocur and the skin tissue surrounding the vein may become swollen and itchy. Also there might be a burning sensation beneath the skin's surface. There is also pain and heaviness when lowering the leg. Some sufferers report leg cramps or a pulling sensation. Symptoms of deep Phlebitis incluse: An abscence of symptoms. Pain and swelling in the whole leg. Slight fever, skin ulcers and a swelling in the leg that stays indented when pressed. Because Deep Phlebitis is rare most people don't recognize it. Usually someone affected ends up in the hospital before treatment begins.

Anesthesia
Intravenous Catheter Complications
About 25 million Americans have intravenous catheters placed each year. Intravenous catheters (or IVs) are a very important part of medical treatment for acute illnesses, cancer, surgery, anesthesia, and trauma, allowing medications to reach as quickly and effectively as possible, via the bloodstream, the parts of the body where they work. IV catheters can be placed in a hand, arm or leg. These are known as "peripheral" IVs. IVs placed in the central circulation, like the internal jugular vein (neck) or subclavian vein (just beneath the collar bone), are known as "central lines". The rest of this article will deal with peripheral IVs, the most common type of IV. During the placement of an IV, a needle is inserted through the skin and into an accessible blood vessel. A Teflon (plastic) cannula is then slid over the needle, which is withdrawn. No needle remains in your body. (So-called "butterfly" needles are an exception to this). Some healthcare providers use a little bit of local anesthetic beforehand, with a very tiny needle, to numb the area of skin where the IV is inserted. Local anesthetic cream is sometimes applied 45-60 minutes beforehand to achieve the same effect. This is particularly helpful in the care of children.

While computed tomography (CT) is an accepted procedure for investigation of the inferior vena cava (IVC), little attention has been given to its use in IVC thrombosis secondary to proximal extension of thrombi within the lower venous system. Four cases are presented and several advantages of CT

What is Phlebitis?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis is swelling of a vein, usually with the presence of large or small blood clot(s) in the vein. There are essentially two types of this condition: superficial phlebitis , and deep vein phlebitis or thrombosis (DVT). Superficial phlebitis is less severe though it still requires medical treatment. DVT can be a life threatening condition, since large clots in a vein can break off, enter the blood stream and cause stroke. Symptoms of superficial thrombophlebitis include the following:
  • Swelling of the vein
  • Swelling, redness, and/or tightness of skin around the vein
  • Slight Fever
  • Burning or uncomfortable feeling around the vein
Symptoms of DVT may not be present, but in more severe cases you may note the following:
  • Swelling and discomfort of the entire limb in which the vein is located
  • Fever
  • Tightness, burning and discomfort around the vein
  • Redness around the vein or redness in the limb affected.
Both superficial and deep vein phlebitis can be caused by the same factors. These include:
  • Obesity
  • Sitting for long periods of time, as in a car, or airplane for a long trip
