The Occupational/Physical Therapy Department
provides an exceptional environment of professional support that challenges the staff to evaluate and apply therapeutic technology that truly has a positive effect on patient outcomes. The department is continually examining its delivery of care with a focus to meet the needs of a rapidly changing health care environment including all post-acute care services. The department has and will continue to fulfill an integral role in design and program development for comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation for the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation and for the comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility at Comp Rehab Plaza.
Each area of service has licensed practitioners and/or experience based competent staff to provide care from birth through the continuum of life based on physical, psychosocial, educational and safety related criteria. The only exception to this is on Acute Rehab unit, the Transitional Care unit, ACE unit, and Oak Summit. Each of these areas provide rehabilitative services to patients eighteen years through the continuum of life.
Staffing plans for patient care services are developed based on the level and scope of care that need to be provided, the frequency of the care to be provided, and a determination of the level of staff that can most appropriately and competently provide the type of care needed. Each assistant director or supervisor in charge of a cost center will define collaboratively the program needs with the director and the appropriate health care team members. The director will work collaboratively with the assistant director, supervisors, program team members and the responsible vice president to determine the FTEs and appropriate mix of staff to provide quality care.

    Getting Appropriate Physical Therapy
How Can It Help Your Recovery?

Appropriate physical therapy is crucial to both the physical and emotional lives of people who must live with a residual limb after amputation. Without it, patients are in store for a wide variety of additional problems during and after their recovery. Whatever the reason, if an amputee goes a reasonably long period without a prosthesis with the intention of using one in the future, certain precautions should be taken to enable proper functioning of the limb once the prosthesis is used. In fact, even if amputees decide never to use a prosthesis, appropriate physical therapy is very important for their overall physical well-being. It can help them maintain and improve their circulation, skin health, strength and endurance, and it can help them decrease their risk of developing contractures (shortened muscles or tendons). An amputation is a traumatic event to the body, and recovery time varies from person to person. When patients have an appropriate amount of physical therapy, their physical therapist may have the opportunity to see them more often than any other medical professional and should be able to monitor their residual limb and incision area.

    P hysical therapy increases pain?
If a muscle is weak and you exercise it, it should feel better correct? What if the person feels worse? What if even gentle movements cause excruciating pains? Could these be from a muscle problem. We doubt it. When exercise and/or gentle movements under the guidance of a physical therapist, personal trainer, or other rehabilitation specialist cause significant pain or make the person worse, well, you know what we would be thinking. This person has a ligament problem and that ligament problem will respond very well to Prolotherapy! Ligament tension can increase drastically with gentle movements especially if the ligament is torn or injured. Is physical therapy or massage going to help?

    http://dept.lamar.edu/biology/preprofessional handbook/physical_therapy.htm
Physical Therapy The physical therapist is a member of the health-care team whose primary responsibility is to test, evaluate and treat patients with acute or prolonged movement dysfunction. Treatments are planned and implemented to restore normal health and function to the body. This is done through patient and family education, a planned program of exercise and the use of a variety of physical agents such as heat, cold, light, water or electricity. Physical therapy specialization with certification in areas such as pediatrics, orthopedics, sports medicine and geriatrics has become common and desirable. Physical therapists are licensed or registered by the state in which they practice. Accreditation of education programs is by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Of the 114 U.S. educational institutions offering accredited baccalaureate or Master's degree level programs in physical therapy, seven are masters programs located in Texas. Nationally, most schools have changed to Master's level programs in compliance with the 1979 recommendation by the APTA. College or university students planning on careers in physical therapy should be aware that transfer to a professional program is not automatic. Competition is keen among applicants and most schools prefer those who have a proven interest in the field. This may be demonstrated by having worked as a volunteer or paid physical therapy aide.

The specific physical therapy program is called Collateral Arterial Flow Exchange (C.A.F.E) Exercises . Here the idea is to concentrate and direct blood circulation and nutritional reach to damaged region. By means of the Collateral arteries the nutritional support to damaged joint is increased.
The doctor also advises his patients to do Tai Chi. We recommend to our patients this wonderful ancient Chinese exercise, this type of Tai Chi is designed specifically for arthritis. This style of Tai Chi is known as "Sun Style" is designed by Master Paul Lam M.D. who also suffers from arthritis. Several studies have shown that regular tai chi practice has benefits: By increasing circulation to the joints, it can help improve arthritis, It can reduce falls in the elderly or those with balance disorders — sometimes dramatically. Every day, in parks, gyms and on the beaches across America, people are practicing tai chi. As they gather around and move together in harmony through a series of slow and synchronized postures, it may look as though they are performing some kind of dance or ritual.
