Pinhole Photography - History, Images, Cameras, Formulas
Introduction
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera.
Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with great care. Cameras have been made of sea shells, many have been made of oatmeal boxes, coke cans or cookie boxes, at least one has been made of a discarded refrigerator. Cameras have been cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautiful hardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiple pinholes. Station wagons have been used as pinhole cameras - and rooms in large buildings.
Basically a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole in one end and film or photographic paper in the other.
Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science.
Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images with cameras you have made yourself is a great pleasure, too. But in serious photography the pinhole camera is just an imaging device with its advantages and limitations, special characteristics and potentials. By making the best of the camera's potential great images can be produced. Some of the images could not have been produced with a lens.
Characteristics
Pinhole images are softer - less sharp - than pictures made with a lens. The images have nearly infinite depth of field. Wide angle images remain absolutely rectilinear. On the other hand, pinhole images suffer from greater chromatic aberration than pictures made with a simple lens, and they tolerate little enlargement.

This shot was taken using a pinhole camera made out of a Milo tin. / A pinhole camera is a camera without a glass lens. / The tin is fully blacked out and a pin sized, extremely tiny hole is made. / The shutter of a pinhole camera usually consists of a hand operated flap of some light-proof material to cover and uncover the pinhole so as to not expose the film or paper inside the tin. / Pinhole cameras require much longer exposure times than conventional cameras because of the small aperture; typical exposure times can range from 5 seconds to hours or days. / The film used here is Agfachrome (transparency/positive) RSX II 50 ASA and is placed inside the Milo tin in complete darkness of course. / The location is Altona pier. / Warning: absolutely no Milo was discarded to make this pinhole camera. oh yeah, please view it large.

And now for something completely different. With all those spiffy digital cameras available, why would someone take photos using a wooden box with a hole in it? Don't knock it until you've tried it. The primitive art of pinhole photography is making a compeback as a simple, satisfyiny art in a complex age. STEVE SALNIKER

9 images on two web pages Stephen Salniker created this Gallery with a whole new perspective. He uses a camera with no lens, as primitive, yet evocative as the earlies photos ever taken in the mid 1800s. He started doing pinhole work at age 15 because he did not have an enlarger. He found, after reading an article in Popular Photography, that he could get a large image by building his own camera and using enlarging paper in place of film. That gave him a paper negative, which he then contact-printed to make a positive image. Tthree decades later, Steve continues to make pinhole images. Today he has an enlarger, but still prefers working with large-format negatives. He currently has four cameras that he uses regularly. He prefers "palladium" printing techniques for making black and white prints because he says he gets a wider range of tones in the finished print.

NOTE: there is no need to click on the thumbnails, these photos look best at the size they are here.
The photographs in this gallery were made without a lens. Instead, the light reaching the sensor of my digital camera arrived through a pinhole drilled into a body cap. The opening in the body cap is so small that the rays of light are focused enough to create an image on the sensor.
The camera can be just a few inches from the front of a subject. The photographs are not sharp, but everything in the photo is in focus. Considering there is no lens on the camera, the process is a bit like magic, like photography itself.
These photos break with the traditional rules of pinhole photography. It is usually performed with a homemade camera - as simple as a shoe box, or as complex as a beautifully crafted pinhole-specific camera. While I'm shooting onto a tiny digital sensor in my camera, a "real" pinhole camera should project the image onto a larger piece of photographic paper, or negative film. What is on the paper or film is all there is, no enlargement is necessary.
Of course, I can enlarge a pinhole photograph well beyond the size of my camera's tiny sensor. But if I make the image much larger, the picture will be too fuzzy.

On pinhole photography Pinhole photography represents the return to the prehistory of photogra - phy, a technique of taking pictures using all kinds of lightproof boxes. The model for construction of pinhole cameras is the so-called camera obscura, used as long ago as in the ancient times for astronomical observations of the Sun. In the Renaissance period, it was employed for drawing from nature. The camera obscura was used by Leonardo da Vinci, and later, in more contemporary times, it became the prototype of a regular photographic camera. The role of the lens is played by a tiny hole - the image, formed on the opposite side of the box, is registered on photosensitiv material (a negative, photographic paper).
