THIS WEEK ON
SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives November November 22, 2002:
Hour One: Planetariums / Amateur Astronomy
Have you been to a planetarium lately? Planetariums are increasingly going digital, replacing those quaint sky tours of our elementary school field trips with slick productions that blend art and science into fantastic tours of the universe. In this hour of Science Friday we'll take a look at the new planetarium shows. Plus, how to look at the real night sky, how amateur astronomers are contributing to the science...and some tips on buying telescopes. Call in with your comments and questions at 1-800-989-8255, and share your opinions online in our Listeners' Lounge registration required Listen to this program in RealAudio! Guests:

Traveling Planetariums
Want to Bring Space Science into your Community? The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) and Rice University are building a community of informal and formal educators and researchers that brings space science content and information about NASA missions to students and the public through traveling planetariums. Four digital portable planetarium theatres, housed at the HMNS and Rice University in Houston, Lodestar Astronomy Center in Albuquerque, and the Louisiana Arts and Science Center in Baton Rouge are available to travel across the six states in the SCORE region. How to Get Involved There are different ways to bring a traveling planetarium into your community. Attend Training to Host Shows Yourself
Educators and space science researchers are invited to attend training sessions offered by Rice University and the HMNS. These training sessions occur in Houston, and also at national and regional education and science conferences. Once trained, you will be able to schedule a traveling planetarium to visit your community and lead the shows. Contact Ms. Tara Oakes

Multipurpose planetarium. One of the best around, and still getting better... The organization of the menus is particularly innovative and the graphical display options very flexible. The negative point is its slowness, particularly with all the design trimmings activated; also, it does not allow direct printing.
On the graphical side, it offers the classical representation of the celestial sphere; the situation of the sky over the local horizon; elongations and heliocentric position of the planets and a tool to draft/register your sunspot observations. On the ephemeris side, it gives you access to a wide set of utilities with all expected calculations: current time in some twenty calendars; eclipses; conjunctions; seasons; distances; moon phases; conversion of coordinates; an option to list the objects by type seen over a given period of time and on a given constellation etc, etc... Also featured is an interface to record personal observations.
The basic package includes databases of planets, comets, asteroids, eclipses, exoplanets and the 2000 star catalogue down to magnitude 8. Further catalogues can be downloaded separately (visit the homepage and choose according to your specific needs: Tycho 2, Master Star Catalogue etc...).

With its domed ceiling, digital projectors, and realistic view of the moving heavens, planetariums bring the heavens to earth. The earliest planetariums were created in the early 13th century, yet there are records of primitive forms of planetariums dating back to antiquity. In fact, the oldest planetarium, the Eise Eisinga Planetarium is in Holland and was built in 1781. Amazingly, it is still in operation today. Planetariums are found worldwide and they are extremely vital teaching tools for explaining the heavens and how celestial objects work.
Planetariums bring together a realistic view of heavenly objects and combine theatrical effects and illusions to create dazzling shows. Though some planetariums focus on astronomy from an educational point of view, you may be amazed at how much entertainment is provided by your local planetarium. In the early 80's the first computerized planetarium was installed. Once this technology came into existence planetariums were able to create entertaining displays that featured any imagery they chose along with the celestial sky. In fact, many planetariums also feature IMAX films, the highest quality film there is. Planetariums have helped bring the universe into the grasp of the common man.
      The Date Activity
Visiting a planetarium is a great activity for a date. There is nothing more romantic then stargazing and planetariums provide you with a dark romantic setting full of stars, heavenly objects, and wonder. Not only is the environment perfect, but also most planetarium shows are educational as well as entertaining. You may also be amazed to find that your local planetarium offers laser shows as well. These laser shows are set to soundtracks, such as Pink Floyd's The Wall and are as enjoyable as attending a concert. However, make sure that your date likes loud rock music, and all the extras before choosing a Laser Show for your date experience. If rock music, lights, and fog are too much for your date, stick with a tour of the galaxies.

About, above: Part 1 - cardboard planetariums throughout the streets of Sydney
Please be advised that on Friday 22nd + Saturday 23rd February, 2008, there will be three Cardboard Planetariums installed throughout the Sydney CBD, rain, hail or shine. You are very much invited. Details of exact locations will be advised on THE JUNE FOX website on Thursday 21st Feb. The splendor of the night sky has been a source of wonder, discovery and agitation for our species throughout human history. The observation of the heavens has defined religions, revolutionized scientific thought, guided navigators, and inspired countless mythologies. It has been said that 'they who cannot see the night sky, cannot see...' In most urban environments, and cities in particular, light pollution renders the night sky down to a few of the brightest stars and planets, obscuring the majority of what has been so essential to our species' development. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Perhaps the stimulus of stargazing is not essential to a happy life. But just in case... The Cardboard Planetariums will be found throughout the city, hanging in space, rotating lazily around their central hanging axis. You are welcome to duck inside, and to stand for a moment (or as long as you like) inside a solar-powered simulation of the night sky.
