Plasma physics
Plasma physics is the field of physics which studies ionized gases known as plasmas. In physics and chemistry plasma (also called an ionised gas ) is an energetic gas-phase state of matter , often referred to as "the fourth state of matter", in which some or all of the electrons in the outer atomic orbitals have become separated from the atom or molecule . The result is a collection of ions and electrons which are no longer bound to each other. Because these particles are ionized (charged), the gas behaves in a different fashion than neutral gas in, for instance, the presence of electromagnetic fields . This state of matter was first identified by Sir William Crookes in , and dubbed "plasma" by Irving Langmuir in 1928. A common fluid treatment of plasmas comes from a combination of the Navier Stokes Equations of fluid dynamics and Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism . The resulting set of equations, with appropriate approximations, is called Magnetohydrodynamics (or MHD for short). Plasma physics is important in astrophysics in that many astronomical objects including stars accretion disks nebula , and the interstellar medium consist of plasma. It is also important in hypersonic

Plasma Physics

Plasma, often called the fourth state of matter, is a gas brought to temperatures high enough to free some of the electrons that were previously attached to the neutral atoms. Since a given volume of plasma contains approximately the same amount of free electrons as there is the excess positive charge, it is quasi-neutral. This condition is however violated if the control volume is smaller than that enclosed by a sphere of a certain critical radius. This critical radius is called the Debye Length and is defined as follows:
where e is the permittivity of free space, given as 8.84x10 C / (N*m ). The Debye Length is commonly used as the spatial parameter is computer simulation since quasi-neutrality condition allows for a simpler computational algorithm. Plasma conducts electricity and as such, it responds to an electromagnetic field according to the Newton-Lorentz equations of motion
where E is the electric field, V is the flow velocity and B is the magnetic field.

The ability of the positive and negative charges to move somewhat independently makes the plasma electrically conductive so that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields . Plasma therefore has properties quite unlike those of solids liquids or gases and is considered to be a distinct state of matter . Plasma typically takes the form of neutral gas-like clouds (e.g. stars Contents:

The conductor is usually a plasma , but could also be a solid or liquid metal . In a z-pinch , the current is axial (in the z direction in a cylindrical coordinate system ) and the magnetic field azimuthal; in a theta-pinch , the current is azimuthal (in the theta direction in cylindrical coordinates) and the magnetic field is axial. The phenomenon may also be referred to as a "Bennett pinch" (after Willard Harrison Bennett ), "electromagnetic pinch" , "magnetic pinch" , "pinch effect" or "plasma pinch". Pinches occur naturally in electrical discharges such as lightning bolts , the aurora current sheets , and solar flares . They are also produced in the laboratory, primarily for research into
