Plasma physics
Plasma physics is the field of physics which studies the dynamic behaviour of plasmas. Briefly, it is the study of the statistical properties of a field of charged particles, called a plasma. Sometimes called "the fourth state of matter" (besides solid liquid , and gas ), plasma in this context refers to a gas that has been subjected to enough energy to dissociate atoms from their electrons ionization ), producing a cloud of ions and electrons. Because these particles are ionized (charged), the gas behaves in a different fashion than neutral gas in, for instance, the presence of electromagnetic fields. A common fluid treatment of plasmas comes from a combination of the Navier Stokes Equations of fluid dynamics and Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism . The resulting set of equations, with appropriate approximations, is called Magnetohydrodynamics (or MHD for short). Plasma physics is important in astrophysics in that many astronomical objects including stars , accretion disks, nebula , and the interstellar medium consist of plasma. It is also important in hypersonic

The beta of a plasma , symbolized by , is the ratio of the plasma pressure p n k B T ) to the magnetic pressure p mag B Beta is a parameter indicating the relative importance of kinetic to electromagnetic phenomena. In fusion power applications, beta can be thought of as an economic figure of merit. The magnetic field in a fusion device has technological limits such as the critical field of practical superconductors . The fusion power density, which determines the power output of a reactor, scales with the square of the plasma pressure. Therefore the output of a reactor can be said to scale with the square of the average beta. In a tokamak , for example, there is a fairly firm limit on the value beta can have before destructive instabilities occur. Beta can also be thought of (very approximately) as an economic indicator of reactor efficiency. Since temperature (and therefore

In physical and chemical usage, plasma refers to an ionized gas , in which a certain proportion of electrons are free, rather than being bound to an atom or molecule . The ability of the positive and negative charges to move somewhat independently makes the plasma electrically conductive so that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields . Plasma therefore has properties quite unlike those of solids liquids or gases and is considered to be a distinct state of matter . Plasma typically takes the form of neutral gas-like clouds (e.g. stars Plasma arcs between the probes on a Wimshurst Machine . This device, invented in the early 1880s, has long been a popular laboratory demonstration of plasma.
