It's a holiday weekend. Some of you may have loaded up the car with the kids for a trip out of town; a visit to Grandma or the lake cottage. Me? I worked. I've been working a lot lately and last night they asked me to stay over past the agreed upon hours. Sometimes when the favor is asked I'll be offered a choice of where I would spend the time. This was one of those times. I chose the Mental Health Room. Mental Health is kind of a crap shoot. With the right mix of patients, or even just one particularly live one, it can be horrible. Usually, however, it's a cake walk. Sometimes it's the only peaceful room in the ER. Most of these people just want a place to sleep off the street or away from their home situations. Unfortunately, I lost the roll on this one. I walked in to a room in full revolt. However, after about an hour I had things pretty much under control. The ones I couldn't bribe with food were given liberal doses of Ativan. Only one problem remained. After a few hours of this the drunk decided he was leaving no matter what I said. "I'm walking out of here buck-booty naked, bye bye" and he started removing the IV. I told him not to do it but I didn't stop him. He didn't really need the IV anyway. I can proudly say that we are still a team of 5 people and have past the 5 1/2 year mark of being in business. The time has come for us to review our client roster and narrow down our client focus. Up until now we have happily worked with anyone and were thrilled to earn their business. However not all projects went perfectly and I believe that we are mostly to blame in these cases. As a small business we are always looking for more projects so that we can pay our staff, our car payments, mortgage payment, etc. In the past we would try to work with almost everyone that would come to us and try to make our solution work for them. However we have realized that we didn't do ourselves and our clients a great service from time to time. There were some cases where we were not the perfect fit for them and we tried to work through it - it cost us more time than we had quoted for and the client's experience was not what they expected. This was not a win-win situation. We only had to go through a few samples of this kind of situation to realize that something different needs to be done. I firmly believe that we were attracting everyone because we were offering services to everyone. We are now going to go through the process of rewording our "30 second infomercial" and our messages on our web site to explain to our audience the kind of businesses we want to work with.
