Population genetics
Population genetics is the study of the allele frequency distribution and change under the influence of the four evolutionary forces: natural selection genetic drift mutation and gene flow . It also takes account of population subdivision and population structure in space. As such, it attempts to explain such phenomena as adaptation and speciation . Population genetics was a vital ingredient in the modern evolutionary synthesis , its primary founders were Sewall Wright J. B. S. Haldane and R. A. Fisher , who also laid the foundations for the related discipline of quantitative genetics

Scope and theoretical considerations
Perhaps the most significant "formal" achievement of the modern evolutionary synthesis has been the framework of mathematical population genetics. Indeed some authors (Beatty 1986) would argue that it does define the core of the modern synthesis. Lewontin (1974) outlined the theoretical task for population genetics. He imagined two spaces: a "genotypic space" and a "phenotypic space". The challenge of a complete theory of population genetics is to provide a set of laws that predictably map a population of genotypes G ) to a phenotype space ( P ), where

Molecular phylogenetics and population genetics of Australian stingless bees
The aim of the study is to produce a molecular phylogeny of Australian stingless social bees of the genera Trigona and Austroplebeia . The molecular phylogeny will be used to test the validity of the existing taxonomy. In particular, we will determine whether the observed nest morphology polymorphism in the species complex of Trigona carbonaria T. hockingsi and T. mellipes is a valid character for species recognition, or merely a behavioural polymorphism within a single species. The work proposed is significant because (i) It will provide basic biological knowledge of a group of species which are probably vital pollinators in many Australian ecosystems. (ii) It may explain why, based on surveys of allozyme and RAPD variation, the Australian species are so lacking in genetic variability (iii) It will provide an understanding of when Australia was colonised by stingless bees. iv) The extreme polymorphism observed in the nest building characteristics of the T. carbonaria, T. hockingsi

Laboratory 4 - Supplement: Determining if a Population deviates from Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
    February 12 and 13, 2002
Click here for a printable version (PDF format) The equation given by the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium principle is essentially a null hypothesis - a prediction of the genotype frequencies you would expect to observe for gene ( A ), given two alleles ( A and a ), represented by the frequencies p and q , respectively. This "hypothesis" is dependant on a rather strict set of assumptions that must be true for a population to be in equilibrium. Population geneticists are interested in determining whether the observed genotype frequencies conform to the theoretical distribution expected in the case of the Hardy-Weinberg principle. Deviations from this equilibrium suggest that interesting processes (such as selection, genetic drift, or gene flow) are at work, setting the stage for future investigations studying the forces driving evolution in these populations. In order to determine whether observed genotype frequencies deviate from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, we use the

    Fixation (population genetics)
    About Fixation (population genetics)
In population genetics , 'fixation' occurs when every individual within a population has the same allele at a particular locus . The allele, such as a single point mutation or whole gene , will be initially rare (e.g. originating in one individual), but can spread through the population by random genetic drift and/or positive selection . Once the frequency of the allele is at 100%, being possessed by each member, it is said to be "fixed" in the population. Similarly, genetic differences between taxa are said to have been fixed in each species
