Disaster Survivors Face PTSD Risk
Medical Author:
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that can develop following any traumatic, catastrophic life experience. Recognition of this condition increased dramatically following the war in Viet Nam, when many returning U.S. veterans developed disturbing psychological symptoms and impaired functioning. More recently, the 9/11 tragedy, the Asian tsunami, the London bombings, and Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath have left thousands of people at risk for this potentially debilitating condition. PTSD symptoms can develop weeks or months, or sometimes even years, following a catastrophic event. Along with survivors of natural disasters, wars, and acts of terrorism, people who have been the victims of violent crime or torture often develop symptoms of PTSD.

A wrongful termination lawsuit is filed. Among the many claims is a claim for emotional damages. Plaintiff states that the unfair firing led to nightmares, anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, disintegrating relationships with friends and family, and a loss of interest in sexual intimacy and in other activities that formerly brought pleasure. In short, the plaintiff claims damages caused by Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Is the plaintiff suffering from this serious psychiatric condition, or is the plaintiff merely angry at what happened? Did the plaintiff experience a trauma, or did the plaintiff merely experience a grievance.

Posttraumatic stress disorder
ज्ञानकोश: - The Indological Knowledgebase Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) , is a term for the psychological consequences of exposure to or confrontation with stressful experiences, which involve actual or threatened death, serious physical injury or a threat to physical integrity and which the person found highly traumatic. Symptoms can include reexperiencing phenomena such as nightmares and flashbacks avoidance of reminders and emotional detachment , and hyperarousal with sleep abnormalities, extreme distress resulting from personal " triggers irritability and excessive startle. There is also the possibility of simultaneous suffering of other psychiatric disorders. Experiences likely to induce the condition include rape combat exposure, violent attacks, and childhood physical/emotional abuse . PTSD is a chronic condition but can improve with treatment or even spontaneously. PTSD is primarily an anxiety disorder and should not be confused with normal grief and adjustment after traumatic events. For most people, the emotional effects of traumatic events will tend to subside after several months. If they last longer than that then consideration should be given to diagnosing a psychiatric disorder. Most people who experience traumatic events will not have PTSD. PTSD may have a delayed onset of years or even decades and may be triggered by a life event such as the death of someone close or the diagnosis of a serious medical condition. Once PTSD reaches the criteria for diagnosis the untreated course is generally for some worsening and then stability of the level of symptomatology over many years.

Surviving Post Traumatic Stress
Traumatic Experiences Can Cause Severe Anxiety Attacks
Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen Mar 2, 2007
Traumatic events can trigger psychological disorders. Post traumatic stress disorder can be caused by floods, earthquakes, war, fires, accidents, abuse, burns, torture, kidnapping, concentration camps, incest, violent crime, and so on. Traumatic experiences overwhelm normal biological and psychological mechanisms, and can result in behaviors that are terrifying and confusing for everyone involved. The feelings of helplessness, terror, and loss of control are overwhelming. Surviving post traumatic stress is easier when you know the signs of this anxiety disorder.
A brief history of post traumatic stress disorder
Freud first touched on this anxiety disorder It was the Vietnam War that led the American Psychiatric Association to recognize post traumatic stress disorder as a genuine psychiatric disorder. Veterans of the Vietnam War came forward, and eventually large scale studies of the psychological effects of military combat were conducted. Psychologists learned how to help people survive post traumatic stress.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Nightmare After The Ordeal
by: Michael G. Rayel, MD
Sarah is a 28 y/o accountant who had a traumatic past that she kept to herself. At age 15, she was grabbed by a masked man while she was jogging in a park. The man threatened to kill her with a knife and brutally raped her. She screamed but nobody seemed to have heard her. Since that time, Sarah has developed nightmares about being raped or killed. In most days, she has suffered from flashbacks of her being attacked. Each time she watches TV shows that remind her of the incident, she gets scared, overwhelmed, and becomes agitated. At times, she develops anxiety attacks, palpitations, sweating, and restlessness. Since the attack, Sarah can hardly trust people. As a result, her relationships have profoundly suffered. More recently, she’s been depressed and feeling hopeless. She hasn’t been sleeping and eating well. Her inattention has negatively impacted her work. Based on the above symptoms, Sarah is most likely suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). What exactly is PTSD?
